VASS - Minnie Ruth Bristow Tyson McRae, 87, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at her home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vass Church of God, where she was a charter member, with the Rev. Tommy Snuffer and the Rev. Don Daniels officiating. Burial will be in Old Presbyterian Church cemetery in Carthage.
She was a pianist and Sunday school teacher at her church, a member of the North Carolina State Board of Nursing and was the founder and operator of McRae's Rest Home in Vass.
Surviving are daughter, Janette Ashley of Sanford; sons, Larry Bristow of Siler City, Tommy Tyson of Whispering Pines, John Harold Tyson of Asheboro; brother, Woodrow Swain of Fayetteville; sister, Katherine Smith of West Virginia; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

ALBEMARLE - Virginia Mae Carnes Lanier, 78, of 625 Bethany Road, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Stanly Manor.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.
She was a native of Brookville, Pa., the widow of John Hal Lanier Sr., and was a retired seamstress with Knitsters.
Surviving are sons, John H. Lanier Jr. of Belmont, Sid Lanier of New London; brother, Robert "Bob" Carnes of Brookville, Pa.; sisters, Maxine Simpson of Augusta, Ga., Alice Tetrake of Erie, Pa.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

ASHEBORO - Carl Allen Ryerson, 83, of 1502 Old Cox Road, Asheboro, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Alvin Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Friends Meeting Cemetery.
He was a native of Herington, Kan., the widower of Mary Elizabeth Ryerson, a member of the Randolph County Genealogical Society, and a member of Asheboro Friends Meeting. He was retired from the Randolph County School System, was a member of N.C. Retired Teachers Association and had worked as a psychologist.
Surviving are daughter, Elizabeth R. Bodman of Winston-Salem, Anna Jane Barker of Asheboro, Amy Zerbach of Panama City Beach, Fla.; son, Ned Ryerson of Little Rock, Ark.; brother, Frank Earl Ryerson Jr.; eight grandchildren.

RAMSEUR - Elaine Hammer Brown, 77, of Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation, formerly of Ramseur, died Friday, April 20, 2001.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Thurman Williams and the Rev. Kenneth Huggins officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.
She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

He was a native of Chatham County and was retired from Overnight Trucking Company.

SILER CITY - Frances Lee Shelton, 91, of 317 S. Second Ave., died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at SunBridge Care Facilities, Siler City.
Graveside service will be 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Chatham Memorial Park, with the Rev. Travis Owens and the Rev. Joe Casteel officiating.
She was a native of Surry County, a member of First United Methodist Church, and a retired school teacher who taught in Siler City, High Point and Hyde Park, N.Y. She was a former member of ADK, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and she received a Masters from Columbia University.
Surviving is sister, Margaret S. Vestal of Siler City.

DENTON - Rev. Howard Thomas Hodges, 74, of 705 Ward Road, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at his home.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
He was a native of Watauga County, a member and a pastor at Zion Baptist Church, Morganton, had served as a pastor at several churches in the Piedmont and foothills areas, he attended Gardner-Webb College and was a graduate of Fruitland Bible College in Hendersonville.
Surviving are wife, Norma Coffey Hodges of the home; daughters, Rebecca Parsons of Denton, Susan Bullard of Ft. Mill, S.C.; brothers, Tommy Hodges of Arizona, Herbert Hodges of Emerald Isle; sisters, Marline Barnes, Mildred McGlothin and Bernice Gentry, all of Lenoir, Mable Berry of Boone, Reba Hodges of Walkertown; five grandchildren.

She was a native of Cleveland, Va., the widow of Carlton Burns and was the retired owner and operator of Burns Grill.

ASHEBORO - Sara Alice Moore McFadden, 79, of Asheboro, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Quail Haven Inn in Pinehurst.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member.
She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Charles McFadden, a graduate of Asheboro High School, studied mechanical engineering at North Carolina State University and worked at an airplane parts factory. She was an organist, an elder, a member of the Pastoral Search Committee and a member of the "5 B's" club at her church.
Surviving are sons, James S. McFadden, M.D. of Pinehurst, Brian C. McFadden of Raleigh; daughter, Nancy M. Dennen of Raleigh; brother, Joseph W. Moore Jr. of Greensboro; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters.
The family will be at the church following the service.

She was a former Sunday School teacher, organist, pianist, treasurer, member of the United Methodist Women, a treasure of the cemetery fund and had served on the board and choir at her church. She was a retired poultry farmer.
Surviving are husband, Joseph Allen Caviness of Bear Creek; son, Jimmy Allen Caviness of Bear Creek; sisters, Ruth B. Wilkie and Betty B. Dixon, both of Siler City, Irene B. Veito of Raeford; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Surry County, a homemaker, the widow of Raymond R. Barfield, with whom she founded Willow Lane Baptist Church, and where she was a member and a Sunday School teacher and soloist.
Surviving are sons, Johnny Ray Barfield, Donnie K. Barfield, both of Asheboro; sisters, Stella P. Tate, Hallie P. Brown, Inez P. Davis, all of Asheboro; brothers, Marvin Poindexter of Candor, Arnie Poindexter of Asheboro; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 5 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at All Souls Anglican Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. R. Larry Emerson and the Rev. David R. Easters officiating.
He was a native of Maine, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a former school teacher in Maine.
Surviving are wife, Leonide Ride "Lee" Greene of Asheboro; son, Anthony Matthew Greene of Greensboro; daughter, Kristina G. Kocher of Greensboro; brothers, Howard Greene of Glastonbury, Conn., Carlton Greene of Auburn, Maine; one granddaughter.
