DENTON - R. Dakota Smith, 88, of Slate Mine Road, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, where he was the oldest member, with the Rev. Chris Smith and the Rev. Mike McClellan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a retired employee of Terrell Brothers Mfg. Co. after 32 years, and he was a farmer.

Surviving are wife, Lois Lanier Smith of the home; son, Richard Smith of Denton; daughter, Shelbia Jarrell of Lexington; brother, Reece Smith of Denton; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

SILER CITY - Henry Jackson "Jack" Fields, 52, of 371 Jim Gilliland Road, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bear Creek Baptist Church, Bear Creek, where he was a member, with the Rev. Darrell Williams and the Rev. Gyles Saunders officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County and was employed with Master Craft Fabrics, Siler City.

Surviving are wife, Cecelia Dixon Fields of Siler City; sons, Curry Lynn Fields, Howard Jeffrey Fields, both of Siler City, Jeremy Grant Fields of the home; daughter, Missy Petty of Bonlee; stepson, Bucky Brinn of Banner Elk; mother, Nannie Gaines Fields of Goldston; brother, Melvin Fields of Siler City; sisters, Fern Beavers, JoAnn Scott, both of Bear Creek; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Monday.

SILER CITY - Elizabeth Smith of 509 Pine Glade Apartments, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity United Holy Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Samuel B. Obie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County and a retired employee of Mid-State Farms.

Surviving are daughters, Judy Rodriguez, Michele Denise Smith, both of Olivia, Deborah A. Alston, Sylvia A. Foxx, both of Siler City; sons, Johnny E. Smith, Donald L. Smith and Michael Smith, all of Olivia; brother, James Newby of Bear Creek.

The family will be at the church 1:30-2 p.m. Monday.

Farrar Funeral Services, Siler City, is in charge of the arrangements.

BEAR CREEK - Ruth Stevens Lynch, 84, of 10678 N.C. 902, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at SunBridge Care Facilities, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Billy Joe Brady officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City.

She was a native of Surry County, a homemaker and a member of Community Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Zeb V. Lynch of Bear Creek; sons, Jimmy L. Lynch of Asheboro, Bobby W. Lynch of Bear Creek, Jack V. Lynch of Staley, William E. Lynch of Burlington, Mike G. Lynch of Bonlee; daughters, Leona L. Morgan, Judy L. Mooneyham, both of Bear Creek, Linda L. Mote of Liberty; sisters, Verlie S. Fore, Ellie Anderson, both of Mt. Airy; brother, Claude Stevens of Mt. Airy; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Leona L. Morgan, 10696 N.C. 902, Bear Creek.

Ruth G. Brandon
ASHEBORO - Ruth Geneva Garrison Brandon, 79, of 529 Steele St., Asheboro, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Gastonia, with the Rev. William Leist officiating.

She was a native of Cramerton, a housewife, a member of First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro, a former member of New Hope Presbyterian Church of Gastonia, and had been a volunteer with the American Red Cross.

Surviving are husband, Charles H. Brandon of Asheboro; daughters, Mona Ruth Brandon of Boone, Risa G. Brandon of Gastonia; sisters, Margaret Gaddis, Helen Dellinger, both of Belmont, Mary Young, Bert Bridges, both of Cramerton; brothers, Paul Garrison of Gastonia, Sam Garrison of Belmont.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Monday, and at New Hope Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, 2-3 p.m. Tuesday.

She was a native of Guilford County, the widow of Wilbert James "Jay" Humble Jr. and a member of First Methodist Church in Liberty.

Surviving are daughter, Cynthia Brown of Siler City; sons, James Lee Humble of Liberty, David A. Humble of Ramseur; brother, W.D. Layton of Julian; four grandchildren.

CARTHAGE - Hoyle Sullivan, 83, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carthage First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tom Herndon officiating. Burial will be in Cross Hill Cemetery.

He was a native of Carthage, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and was a traveling salesman.

ALBEMARLE - Rachel Elizabeth Lowder Russell, 81, of 10333 Fox Hall Drive, Charlotte, formerly of Albemarle, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Mercy Hospital South.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

She was a native of Stanly County, the widow of Clarence Lentz Russell, was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, and was retired from Collins & Aikman.

Surviving is son, David Lentz Russell of Charlotte.

The family will be at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Robert J. Hoover
ASHEBORO - Robert Junior Hoover, 73, of 1512 S. Tremont Drive, Asheboro, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fayetteville Street Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Adrian Pugh officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Annie Ruth Hoover, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, former owner/operator of Robert's Automatic Transmission Service and was retired from Wachovia.

Surviving are daughters, Susan Porter of Ocala, Fla., Tandy Hoover of Asheboro; sons, Chip Hoover of San Francisco, Calif., Rick Hoover of Asheboro; brothers, Oscar Hoover, Sam Hoover, both of Asheboro; sister, Lucinda Ball of Asheboro; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Simon Snyder

RANDLEMAN - Simon Snyder, 89, of 659 1st Park Ave., formerly of Hamptonville, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. Monday at Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home of Yadkinville, with the Rev. Phillip Talton officiating. Burial was in Mt. View Baptist Church cemetery.

He was the widower of Elsie Day Snyder, had been a custodian for Randleman Cotton Mill and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are sons, James R. Snyder, David Lee Snyder, both of Randleman; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Hazel B. Smith
LIBERTY - Hazel B. Smith, 76, of 521 S. Greensboro St., died Monday, May 21, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty with the Rev. Greg Burris officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Liberty.

She was a native of Randolph County and a member of Smithwood United Church of Christ.

Surviving are daughters, Glenda Smith of the home, Brenda Smith of Liberty; son, Tommy Smith of Siler City; sister, Carolyn Ferree of Winston-Salem; brothers, Ronnie Black, James Black, both of Liberty; one grandson.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Rex A. Russell
THOMASVILLE - Rex Anderson Russell, 73, of 1749 Oak St., died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at his home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Floral Garden Cemetery, High Point, with the Rev. Gary Myers officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years and was retired from High Point Sprinkler as a shop foreman.

Surviving are sons, Thomas Russell, Rex A. Russell II, both of High Point, Gary Russell of Thomasville; daughter, Terri Schneider of Cameron; brother, James Charles Russell of Asheboro; sister, Edith Teague of Asheboro; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Shawn D. Leach Jr.
ASHEBORO - Shawn D. Leach Jr., 12, of 665 Country Place, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, as the result of an automobile/bicycle accident.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Friday at Covenant Christian Church in Asheboro, with Pastor Dean Staley officiating. Burial will be in Piney Ridge UMC Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, and was in the sixth grade at North Asheboro Middle School.

Surviving are mother, Diane Blackwell of Washington, D.C.; father, Shawn D. Leach Sr. of the home; sisters, Equilla Blackwell of Washington, D.C., Tiona Leach of Randleman, Chanessi Leach of Asheboro, Rachenie Williams of South Carolina; brothers, Antonio Leach of Washington, D.C., Camden Leach of Greensboro; grandparents, Laura Blackwell of Washington, D.C. Doretha Leach of Asheboro, Curtis Blackwell of Washington, D.C., Willis Brooks of Siler City.

Visitation will be at C.C. Hodges Funeral Home, Asheboro, 12 noon-8 p.m. on Thursday.

Ethel G. Caveness
RAMSEUR - Ethel G. Caveness, 87, of N.C. 49 North, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at McCrary Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Roger Greene officiating. Burial will be in Oakland-McCrary Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of Winston-Salem State University, a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Lair's Club of Asheboro, and she was a retired educator from the Randolph County public schools.

Surviving is son, James V. Caveness of Alabama; daughter, Brona Cheek Smith of Florida; one grandchild.

The family will be at C.C. Hodges Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Lula A. Finlay
CAPE COD, Mass. - Lula Belle Allen Finlay, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass.

A private service was held.

She was a native of Eldorado, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a B.S. in mathematics, and was a painter who specialized in still life and oil medium.

Surviving are husband, Arthur R. Finlay of Cape Cod, Mass.; daughter, Melissa F. Swofford of Kernersville; sons, Edward Finlay and John Finlay, both of Orleans, Mass., Charles Finlay and William Finlay, both of South Orleans, Mass., Thomas Finlay of Marston Mills, Mass.; sister, Lillian Allen Overton of Eldorado; brother, Robert Allen of Eldorado; 10 grandchildren.

Nickerson Funeral Home, Orleans, Mass., was in charge of the arrangements.

Kathleen H. Beane
ASHEBORO -Kathleen Eva Hurley Beane, 80, of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Asheboro, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Callicutt Chapel Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. V.W. Peters officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Grace Baptist Church and the widow of Byron Fenton Beane.

Surviving are sons, Tommy Beane, Steve Beane, both of Asheboro; daughters, Martha Hall of Fox Island, Wash., Rebecca Hughes of Asheboro, Susan Peters of Cleveland, Ohio; sisters, Melva Hurley, Maxilee Callicutt, Ruth Scott, Doris Shaw, all of Asheboro, Onnie Callicutt of Troy; brothers, Arthur Hurley, Eugene C. Hurley, J.T. Hurley, David Hurley, Dempsey Hurley, all of Asheboro; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Clyde Woodell, a member of Russell's Grove Baptist Church, and a former member of the Randleman Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are daughter, Diana Woodell of Randleman; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

She was the widow of Lacy J. Hicks and a retired hosiery mill employee.

Surviving are daughter, Nancy Snoddy of Martinez, Ga.; son, Jerry Hicks of Kimesville; brothers, Dewey Amick of Frankinville, Theodore Amick of Snow Camp; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
