ASHEBORO - Victor Marvin Byrd, 74, of GrayBrier Nursing & Retirement Center of Trinity, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at the Center.
Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Zion United Church of Christ in Thomasville, with Dr. Joe Coltrane officiating.
He was a native of Wilkes County and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are sons, Mark Byrd of Lexington, David Byrd of Randleman, Paul Byrd of Thomasville, Steve Byrd of Vass; sister, Collis Alexander of High Point; brother, Marlow Byrd of Greensboro; six grandchildren.
The family will be at the church following the memorial service.

Ola W. Maness
ASHEBORO - Ola Wallace Maness, 94, of 956 Straight St., Asheboro, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at her home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Wesleyan Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Leroy Cox, the Rev. Mark C. Beane and the Rev. A.J. Kendrick officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church cemetery.
She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Coble M. Maness, and a former Sunday school teacher at her church, which she helped organize in 1932.
Surviving are daughter, Mary Edythe Parks of Asheboro; sister, Beatrice Kennedy of Randleman; three grandchildren; three great-grandsons.
The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Velner G. Mabe
LIBERTY - Velner Garner Mabe, 64, of 259 W. Butler, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at her home.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Siler City Church of God, Siler City, where she was a member, with the Rev. Neal Kight officiating. Burial will be in Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery, Robbins.
She was a native of Moore County, the widow of James "Sunshine" Abner Mabe, and was retired from Liberty Furniture.
Surviving are daughter, Sheryl Warren of Silk Hope; sons, Billy Mabe of Staley, Richard Mabe of Siler City, David Mabe of Liberty; stepson, Wayne Mabe of Ramseur; sisters, Bronna Brewer of Highfalls, Nepsie Williams of Laurinburg; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.
Zetta B. Oldham
BEAR CREEK - Zetta May Bright Oldham, 78, of 818 Reno Sharpe Road, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Clark Davis officiating.
She was a native of Chatham County, a member of Antioch Christian Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are son, Marshall Oldham of the home; brother, Curt Bright of Siler City; sister, Lessie Carlton of Burlington.
The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.
Katherine P. Cox
PATRICK, S.C. - Katherine Paul Cox, 80, died Monday, May 28, 2001.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Palmetto Baptist Church, Patrick, S.C., where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She was a native of McColl, S.C., the widow of both Reid Whittington and Leo Cox, and was a homemaker.
Surviving are sons, Reid Whittington of Cheraw, S.C., Ronnie Whittington of Rockingham, David Whittington of Springfield, Ill.; daughters, Alice Harrelson of Asheboro, Barbara Funderburke and Sue Southard, both of Patrick, S.C., Janette Chappell of Ellerbe, Mary Shepard of Rockingham; sisters, Margaret Grant of Rockingham, Janette James of White Hall, Mich., Carolyn Chavis of Elizabethtown; 31 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

ASHEBORO - George Edward "Ned" Tonkin, 54, of 609 Highland Ave., Asheboro, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Dr. Everette Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Gardens, Greensboro.
He was a native of Greensboro, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, attended Guilford College and was a graduate of Appalachian State University, with a master's degree. He was employed with Randolph Community College as director of Special Services and was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd where he was a Lay Reader.
Surviving are wife, Elizabeth Sparrow Tonkin of the home; daughter, Sarah Cody Tonkin of the home; son, Samuel Benjamin Tonkin of the home; mother, Kathleen Handley Scott of Asheboro.
The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

He was a native of Randolph County, employed with Eveready Battery for 20 years and attended Grace Baptist Temple.
Surviving are wife, Patty Hemphill Sykes; daughter, Regina S. Starling of Asheboro; son, Mitchell C. Sykes of Asheboro; mother, Madge Nance of Asheboro; sisters, Brenda S. Varner of Silver Valley, Linda S. Jackson of New London; brother, Terry Odell Sykes of Thomasville; two grandchildren.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Fleming Kimrey, a homemaker and a member of Patterson Grove Christian Church.
Surviving are son, Vernon Kimrey of Ramseur; daughters, Marie Allred of Asheboro, Golda Johnson of Siler City, Gertrude Kimrey of the home; sister, Addie W. Campbell of Liberty; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Stanly County, a homemaker and a retired food services employee with Montgomery County Schools.
Surviving are husband, Roy J. McIntyre of the home; sons, Wayne McIntyre of Troy, Derrill J. McIntyre of Greensboro, Roger V. McIntyre of Star; sisters, Ruth Whitley of Charlotte, Vernie Ritchie of Statesville, Mary Harwood and Pearlie Harkey, both of Albemarle, Trulie Harkey of East Spencer; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

She was formerly of Asheboro.
Surviving are husband, John Jay Crowley; daughters, Mary Katherine Crowley and Rebecca Karen Crowley; father, Bill R. Atkins of Asheboro; sisters, Cyd Leahy and Amy Hinkle.
