DENTON - Mack A. Pickett Sr., 90, of Varner Street, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Lexington Health Care.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dan Money officiating. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Opal Elliott Pickett, organized Pickett Department Store in Denton and expanded to operate approximately 20 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. He was a co-owner of a furniture store in Denton and owned and operated a Kaiser-Frazier automobile dealership. He was the last charter member and a past president of the Denton Lions Club, a volunteer fireman with the Denton Fire Department and a graduate of Farmer High School.

Surviving are son, M. Allen Pickett Jr. of Lexington; daughters, Gwen Maness of Denton, Emilie Parvin of Aurora, Colo.; brothers, Johnny Pickett and Pearlman Pickett, both of Asheboro; sisters, Algie Caviness, Annie Dorsett, Mary Ellen Johnson, all of Asheboro; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6-8 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Gwen Maness, 385 Bombay Road.

Memorials may be made to First Methodist Church, P.O. Box 425, Denton, N.C. 27239 or donor's choice.

MT. GILEAD - Gary Alan Thompson, 42, of 3889 N.C. 109 South, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at his home.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Sharon Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary McNeil officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a 1977 graduate of West Montgomery High School and a mechanic.

Surviving are mother and stepfather, Betty C. Warner and Bill Warner of Mt. Gilead; grandmothers, Ollie Thompson of Albemarle, Doris Crump of Mt. Gilead.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Dionicia A. Benitez
SILER CITY - Dionicia Aquirre Benitez, 72, of 610 W. Fifth St., died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Loves Creek Baptist Church, where she attended, with the Rev. Israel Tapia officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Pasode Guayaba, Mexico, and a homemaker.

Surviving are son, Orfamel Benitez of Siler City; sister, Castula Aquirre Jaimes of Waco, Texas; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

SILER CITY - Dwayne Anthony Johnson, 39, of 772 Gees Grove Road, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in New York.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Burnettes Chapel Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Stanley Burnette officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County and employed by Billings Freight Co.

Surviving are wife, Vallery Brooks Johnson; daughter, Tierra Dan'elle Johnson of the home; son, Dawrenzic Jewan Johnson of the home; father, Joe Dan Johnson of Snow Camp; brother, Curtis Michael Johnson of Snow Camp; grandmothers, Hilda Burnette and Ethel Johnson.

The family will be at the church 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Neal Kight officiating. Burial will be in Moon's Chapel Baptist Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and a member of Siler City Church of God.

Surviving are daughters, Marie Cockman Wicker of Liberty, Becky Freshwater of Siler City, Phoebe Hembree of Murphy, Sylvia Strickland of Raleigh, Debbie Allen of Georgia; sons, Steve Allen, Leonard Allen, Virgil Allen, Winfred Allen, all of Siler City; sisters, Polly Dowd Duncan of Siler City, Dorothy Langley Hayes of Bear Creek; brother, Billy Poe of Siler City; 26 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - Thomas Wilbourn Vestal, 76, 1822 U.S. 64 West, Asheboro, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at West Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Timothy K. Roberts officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation and was a member of West Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are brothers, John Vestal, J.B. Vestal, both of Asheboro; sister, Fern V. Macon of Barren Springs, Va.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday.

She was a native of Guilford County, the widow of Joseph Harrison Hepler, retired from Laughlin Hosiery Mill and was a member of Balfour Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Larry Bundy of Francisco, David Hepler of Randleman, Bobby Hepler of Durham; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

LIBERTY - Otis Roscoe Lineberry, 91, of 3690 Phillippie Lane, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jeff Moran and the Rev. James A. Stowe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Mozelle Kime Lineberry and a member of the former Farm Club of Liberty.

Surviving are son, Edwin Lineberry of Liberty; brother, Elbert Lineberry of Climax; one grandson; one great-grandson.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

GOLDSTON - Melvin P. "Huch" Beal Sr., 76, of 85 Huss Beal Drive, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at his home.

He was a native of Chatham County, a retired poultry farmer and was one of the first deacons at his church.

Surviving are wife, Lilly Fields Beal of Goldston; son, Melvin P. Beal Jr. of Goldston; daughters, Linda B. Southern, Ann B. Homesley, Betty Jean "Bet" Blakeley, Hope B. Stevenson, all of Goldston; sisters, Marie B. Brewer, Hazel B. Phillips, both of Goldston, Millicent "Brownie" Dickens of Nashville; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Columbus County and had worked for 18 years with Trinity Frame Co.

Surviving are husband, Donald Simmons of Trinity; sons, Ralph Donald Simmons of Sophia, Marshall Wayne Simmons of Lexington; daughter, Glenda S. Jarrett of High Point; one grandchild; two stepgrandchildren.

RAMSEUR - James Loammi Johnson, 75, of 757 Canoy Farm Road, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

He was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Acme McCrary.

Surviving are wife, Ruby Burgess Johnson; son, James L. Johnson of Pelham Manor, N.Y.; sisters, Faye Johnson and Alice Dorsett, both of Ramseur; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home of Herman and Ann Harris, 411 Kimrey St., Ramseur.

She was a native of Chatham County, a nurse's assistant and a member of Eastern Star.

She was a native of Swan Station, the widow of Jasper William Childress and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughter, Mary Elizabeth Edmonds of Greensboro; sons, Loas H. Childress of Hampton, Va., Alvin B. Childress of Yorktown, Va., Julian C. Childress of Carthage; sisters, Lula Mae Johnson and Irene M. Holt, both of Sanford; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.
