Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Philip Birchall and the Rev. Don McCaskill officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County, a board member at his church, assistant Cub Master of Pack 111 and a member and vice president of the Uwharrie Bass Club.

Surviving are wife, Rachel McCaskill of the home; son, Dylan McCaskill of the home; daughter, Emily McCaskill of the home; father, Alex McCaskill of Laurinburg; mother, Tealy McCaskill of Seagrove; sister, Melissa Upchurch of Steeds; grandparents, Rachel McCaskill of Biscoe, Nettie Hancock of Seagrove; stepson, Scott Reynolds of Candor.

Phillips Funeral Home, Star, is in charge of the arrangements.

RAMSEUR - Pablo Mendoza Gutierrez, 49, of 4285 Rockie River St., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Chatham Hospital, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 5 p.m. Thursday at Siler City Church of God, Siler City, with the Rev. Juan Castillo officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

He was a native of Poza Rica, Mexico, a deacon at Siler City Church of God and employed with Townsend Inc.

Surviving are wife, Maria Lopez Mendoza of Ramseur; daughter, Maria Alverez Mendoza of Siler City; son, Luis A. Mendoza of Ramseur; father, Abel Mendoza of Mexico.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 3-4:30 p.m. Thursday.

R. Woodrow Robbins
BISCOE - R. Woodrow Robbins, 87, of 429 E. Main St., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Larry Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Biscoe Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County and owner and operator of Biscoe Grocery for over 40 years.

Surviving are daughter, Bobbie Brewer of Biscoe; sister, Jeanette Nash of New London; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

BROWNS SUMMIT - John William "Bill" Scott, 79, of 2171 Scott Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lee's Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Greg Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park.

He was a native of Guilford County, a member of the United Methodist Men, a member of the Railway Worker's Union, employed with Southern Railway for 36 years and a tobacco and cattle farmer.

Surviving are wife, Janette Nichols Scott of the home; daughters, Patricia S. Smith and Linda S. Brandon, both of Browns Summit; sons, the Rev. Larry William Scott and David Lee Scott, both of Browns Summit; sister, Dorothy Lee White of Greensboro; brother, Marvin Walter Scott of Browns Summit; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home, Greensboro, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

ASHEBORO - Lucille Garner Davis, 84, of 120 E. Walker Ave., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Amos Allen officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Moore County, retired from the Randolph County School Cafeteria and a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are sons, William Jerry Davis of Seagrove, Ricky June Davis of Asheboro; daughter, Jo Edna Nooe of Asheboro; brother, Herbert L. Garner of Robbins; sister, Hilda Davis of Robbins; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

ASHEBORO - Fleta Ellen Stout, 96, of 2638 Bethel Friends Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Holly Spring Friends Meeting, where she was a member, with the Rev. Ricky Sessoms and the Rev. Leslie Winslow officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and an employee with Burrow Cleaners.

Surviving is sister, Vera Smith of Asheboro.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

John J. Russell
MT. GILEAD - John "Johnny" Jacob Russell, 79, of 130 E. First St., died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial, with military honors, will be in Sharon Cemetery.

He was a native of Troy, the widower of Connie Harvelle Russell, a graduate of Star School and a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He worked for Hudson-Belk and Moore's department stores in Asheboro, worked in shipbuilding in Newport News, Va., was the retired founder of Russell-Harvelle Hosiery Mills Inc. in Mt. Gilead and managed a timber farm. He served on the Mt. Gilead Town Board, helped organize a county wide volunteer fire commission, was a volunteer fireman and chief, and instrumental in the building of two fire stations. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner, a member of the American Legion, the Civitans, where he was president, and on the Mt. Gilead School and West Montgomery High School Boards. He was on the building committee and other committees at his church, and a member of the Board of Directors of First Bank, formerly Bank of Montgomery. He was a Boy Scout volunteer, received the Silver Beaver Award, was president of the Central N.C. Boy Scout Council and in 1996, awarded the Boy Scouts' highest volunteer honor by being inducted into the "1910 Society." He was Post Commander of the local VFW Post 10940 and managed its honor guard.

Surviving are sons, John Jacob Russell Jr., Michael Alan "Mike" Russell, both of Mt. Gilead; daughter, Deborah Anne "Debbie" Russell of Mt. Gilead; brothers, Paul Russell of Troy, Silas Russell, H.R. "Bobby" Russell, both of Star; sisters, Elma Holt of Troy, Lucy Stout of Greensboro; two grandsons.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Roger M. Davis
STAR - Roger M. Davis, 76, of 213 Dover Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with Elder David Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Dover Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a retired auto mechanic.

Surviving are wife, Lucy Ward Davis of the home; Connie Hatley of Clover, S.C., Carolyn Russell of Troy; son, Benny Davis of Star; brother, Cecil Davis of Star; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

CANDOR - Maureen Simmons Hall, 77, of 325 S. Whiskey Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at her home.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Macedonia Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Clyde Comer officiating.

She was a native of Stokes County and employed by Springs Mills in the cafeteria.

Surviving are sisters, Betty Ruth Simmons of Candor, Nancy McCormick of Ellerbe, Sarah Greene of Biscoe; brothers, Paul Simmons, Carlo Simmons, both of Candor, Hassell Simmons of High Point, Bobby Simmons, Foye Simmons, both of Rockingham.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

Granville W. Smith
GIBSONVILLE - Granville W. "Smitty" Smith, 77, of 3806 High Rock Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Brown's Chapel Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Larry Pope, the Rev. Billy Roy and the Rev. Allen Myers officiating. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

He was a native of Guilford County, the widower of Agnes Cagle Smith and Ruth J. M. Smith, a former employee of the Department of Transportation, Bridge Department, and of C.J. Kern Construction and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are daughter, Beverly S. Johnson of Fayetteville; son, Tony R. Smith of Troy; sister, Evelyn S. Cook of Gibsonville; brother, Silas R. Smith of Whitsett; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 6-8 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of the sister, 4436 High Rock Road, Gibsonville.

She was a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., the widow of Ernest W. Priddy and had worked at Belk Yates.

Surviving are daughter, Jackie Hilliard of Bahama; sisters, Catherine Chapman, Vivian Keesee, both of Altavista, Va.; brothers, Lincoln Shelton, Osby Shelton, both of Hert, Va.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
