DENTON - Nerissa Anita Briles, 36, of John Carroll Lane, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Lineberry United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dan McClure and the Rev. Mike McClellan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and was enrolled with the Community Living Skill Program.

Surviving is mother, Joan Surratt Briles of the home.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

DENTON - Joan Slack Loflin, 71, of Broad St., died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Dan Money and the Rev. Sandy Young officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, served as church treasurer and was a member of the ladies guild at her church and had worked as an insurance agent.

Surviving are son, Ed Loflin of Winston-Salem; brothers, Robert "Bob" Slack of Denton, Loren Slack of Thomasville.

The family will receive friends at the home on Sunday following the service.

Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, P.O. Box 1941, Lexington, N.C. 27292.

Clifford C. Burgess
CANDOR - Clifford Cleven Burgess, 90, of 2511 Pekin Road, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Bruton Cemetery.

He was a native of Union County and retired from the shipyard in Newport News, Va.

Surviving are wife, Nancy Bruton Burgess of the home; daughter, Joyce B. Russell of Seven Lakes; son, Henry Burgess of the home; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter.

The family will be at home following the service on Tuesday.

Briggs Funeral Home, Troy, is in charge of arrangements.

ASHEBORO - Andrew Baldwin, 65, of 1026 Cedar Falls Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church.

Surviving are brothers, Roosevelt Baldwin of New York, James Baldwin, Junior Baldwin, both of Asheboro; sister, Shirley B. Jordan of New York.

The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

ASHEBORO - Lula Florence Maness Needham, 84, of 525 Peachtree St., Asheboro, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Asbury Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Clay Davis and the Rev. Jere King officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Steeds, retired from Bossong Hosiery and operated City View Grocery.

Surviving are son, Johnny "Junior" Needham Jr. of Asheboro; sisters, Maude Royal of Troy, Bessie Brown of Robbins; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

RANDLEMAN - Lillian Armithy Thompson York, 97, of 1325 Worthville Road, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Falls Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Stowe, the Rev. Junior Dawkins and the Rev. Russell Chrisco officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Jesse N. York and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Annie Allred of Cedar Falls, Jessie Heffner of York, S.C.; sons, Henry York of the home, Steve York of Asheboro; 25 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; 130 great-great-grandchildren; seven great-great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Garland S. Cain
COLERIDGE - Garland "Bill" Samuel Cain, 85, of 1171 N.C. 22 South, Siler City, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Asheboro.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Staley Cemetery, with the Rev. James Denny officiating.

He was a native of Surry County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and had been employed with Cloverleaf Ham Company.

Surviving are sisters, Ada Ferguson of Liberty, Nina Jones of Bennett, Ila Mae Stanley of Newton, Mattie Terry of Hillsville, Va.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Garrett Tillman
BONLEE - Garrett Tillman, 69, of 821 Al Davis Road, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bonlee Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, with Masonic rites.

He was a native of Chatham County, the widower of Louise Harper Tillman, retired owner/operator of Boone Trail Service Station, a member of Mt. Vernon Lodge #143 A.F. & A.M., and was the first fire chief of Bonlee Fire Department.

Surviving are daughters, Susan T. Brower of Siler City, Lisa T. Newton of Salisbury; son, Joel G. Tillman of San Francisco, Calif.; brothers, Bill Tillman of Bear Creek, Charles B. Tillman of Bonlee, June Tillman of Siler City; half brother, Troy M. "Mack" Hancock of Siler City; sister, Mary Joyce Russavage of Tunkhannock, Pa.; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

THOMASVILLE - Myrtie Thompkins Nealey, 85, of 3292 Upper Lake Road, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Thomasville Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons, Thomasville, with the Rev. Tommy Garner, the Rev. Stan Savage, the Rev. Randall Nealey and the Rev. Bill Brown officiating. Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Norris Cemetery in Tabor City.

She was a native of Conway, S.C., the widow of Tillon Isiah Nealey, attended Trindale Independent Fellowship and was a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Kathleen Hemphill, Virginia Norris, Linda Powers, all of Thomasville, Mary Geraldine Skipper of Trinity; sons, Albert Nealey of Denton, Roy Nealey of Trinity; sister, Flaudia Hicks of Thomasville; 38 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great- grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

John C. Murray Sr.
ASHEBORO - John Clifford "Red" Murray Sr., 86, of 834 Lee St., Asheboro, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Kenneth Huggins and the Rev. Richard Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, the widower of Ruth Dockery Murray, retired from General Electric, a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church and attended Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Bennett. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and was a member of American Legion Post 45.

Surviving are wife, Pearle Cole Murray of the home; daughters, Rebecca Ann Johnson, of Tamarac, Fla., Betty Jean Hale of Yadkinville, Linda Kay Murray of Bald Hills, Wash.; son, J.C. Murray Jr. of Pinnacle; sisters, Lillian Ferree Turpin of Bennett, Bessie Brady, Ruby Graham, both of Greensboro; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

FRANKLINVILLE - Kenneth Lee Cranford, 29, of 151 Sunrise Ave., died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Holly's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. James Stowe officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County and was employed with Ramtex.

Surviving are mother and stepfather, Robert and Linda Hall of Asheboro; father and stepmother, Kenneth and Amelia Cranford of Seagrove; brothers, Chad Cranford, Jonathan Cranford, both of Seagrove; sisters, Melissa Wiseman of Robbins, Michele Hall, Erica Hall, both of Asheboro, Brittany Cranford of Seagrove; stepgrandmother, Nellie Beane of Seagrove; grandparents, Roy and Carrie Cranford, Edward and Lucille Wall, all of Franklinville, Minnie Saunders of West End.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Robert and Linda Hall, 451 Andrew Hunter Road, Asheboro, and at the home of Kenneth and Amelia Cranford, 1632 Upper Road, Seagrove.

Rev. Buel Creason
SILER CITY - The Rev. Buel Creason, 74, of 3532 Siler City-Glendon Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Cooper, the Rev. David Hicks and the Rev. Tim Howell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Davie County, a veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of Goldston Baptist Church, a graduate of Campbell College and was a retired minister, having served at Sandy Creek Baptist Church, Liberty, Riverside Baptist Church, Erect, Clearview Baptist Church, Franklinville, Hillside Baptist Church, Clayton and Goldston Baptist Church, Goldston.

Surviving are wife, Mary Jessup Creason of Siler City; daughter, Emily C. Harris of Bear Creek; sons, Ronnie Creason, Ray Creason, Glenn Creason, all of Siler City, David Creason of Asheboro; sister, Margaret C. Caviness of Bennett; 10 grandchildren.

He was a native of Randolph County and a retired plumber.

Green of Silk Hope; brothers, Robert Kivett of Siler City, Wayne Kivett of Seagrove, Mike Kivett of Staley; sisters, Marie Wall of Asheboro, Louise Camp of Burlington, Carolyn Miller of Linwood; 10 grandchildren.

He was a native of Randolph County.

"Mac" Russell of Virginia Beach, Va., Boyce Major Jr. of Tuscon, Ariz., David Major of Archdale, Randal Major, Gregory Major, both of Asheboro; grandfather, Herman H. Humble of Asheboro; grandmother, Rosa R. King of Asheboro.

She was a native of Stanly County, was in the Ruth Sunday School Class, a member of the Sunshine Club, Senior Adult Choir, and Mission Craft Group at her church, and was a member and officer of the Randolph Chapter #210 Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are son, Lloyd Hamlet of Asheboro; daughter, E. Joyce Hamlet of Asheboro; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Howard Maness, Tracy Maness, both of Asheboro; sisters, Esther Kennedy of Seagrove, Madeline Davis of Asheboro.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Lloyd and Ann Hamlet, 569 Windsor Drive, Asheboro.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Charles M. Huggins and Theodore E. Smith, was retired from Acme-McCrary Corp., and taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir at her church.

Surviving are daughter, Nancy Hammonds of Asheboro; son, Wade Huggins of Asheboro; stepdaughter, Rebecca Cox of Asheboro; stepsons, J. Paul Smith, George Cockerham, both of Asheboro; sisters, Florence B. Cheek of Asheboro, Bessie B. Trogdon of Franklinton; brother, Bobby D. Bray of Asheboro; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Chatham County, had been employed at Hardin's Florist in Liberty, and was a member of Hunter Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Tommy Goins of Siler City; daughters, Cindy G. Loggins of Liberty, Tonya Goins of Siler City; mother, Elaine Gaines Fields of Siler City; brothers, Buck Fields of Siler City, Allen Fields of Charlotte; sisters, Kay F. Willett of Southern Pines, Margaret F. Barth of Siler City; one grandson.
