ASHEBORO -Doris Louise Sands Hicks, 77, of 422 E. Kivett St., Asheboro, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at her home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Dr. Boyd Stokes officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
She was a native of Burbank, Calif., a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and served in several different offices of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Asheboro Extension Home Makers and the Dogwood Garden Club, a retired bookkeeper with Georgia-Pacific and employed with Sheraton Finance as a bookkeeper.
Surviving are daughter, Theresa Hicks of Asheboro; sister, Lillie Marie Hibbitt of Lebanon, Tenn.; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the home.

ASHEBORO - Arthur Glenn Sanders, 71, of 434 Westbury Drive, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Asheboro.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Oaklawn Cemetery, with Dr. Richard Crider officiating.
He was a native of Moore County, a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict and retired from Randolph Electric Membership Corp.
Surviving are wife, JoAnne Sanders; daughter, Kelly Anne Sanders of Sarasota, Fla.; sons, Todd Sanders of Edenton, Eric Sanders of Asheboro; sister, Olgie Stewart of Asheboro; one granddaughter.

LIBERTY - Clarence G. Smith, 76, of 6963 Bowman Dairy Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian.
He was a native of Stuart, Va., a former member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he served as church deacon and was retired from P. Lorillard Company in Greensboro.
Surviving are wife, Myrtle Marie Smith of Guilford Health Care in Greensboro; daughter, Brenda S. Cook of Greensboro; son, Kenneth G. Smith of Graham; sisters, Lorene Ingle of Burlington, Betty Jean Staley of Liberty; brother, Haldon Smith of Liberty; four grandchildren.

He was a native of Moore County, the widower of Allie Lassiter Blake and a retired house painter.

JACKSONVILLE - C.C. "Whitey" Welborne, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville, with Chaplain Ollis J. Mozon Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Onslow Memorial Park, with full military honors.
He was a native of Ramseur, the widower of Rachel Swing Welborne; a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam; and a member of FRA and DAV Chapter 16. He was a member of the Marine Corps League and a founding member of the U.S.S. Missouri Marine Corps Detachment Association.
Surviving are daughters, Sylvia Fetner of Carolina Beach, Judy Huff of Jacksonville; sisters, Mozelle Dixon, Lillie Isley, Velma Williamson, all of Ramseur, Joyce Kinney, Gladys Fae Byrd, both of Asheboro; brothers, Glenn Ray Welborn of Leland, Jack Welborn of Asheboro; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

CHESTER, Va. - Robert Edward Crowell, 79, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Chippenham Medical Center.
He was a native of Asheboro, a 1951 graduate of North Carolina State University, an associate of American Cylanamid in Stamford, Conn., and the Allied Chemical Company, a member of the Chester Lions Club and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Surviving are wife, Doris B. Crowell; daughters, Deane C. Nolde, Sandy C. Messer, both of Richmond, Va.; son, Robert E. Crowell of Charlottesville, Va.; brothers, John Crowell, George Crowell; sisters, Catherine Hester, Lucy Crowell, Anna Alexander, Nancy Villeneuve; eight grandchildren.

He was a native of Colcord, W. Va., a member of Colcord Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, and he attended Cedar Grove Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran and a retired coalminer with 38 years at Beth Energy.
Surviving are wife, Evelyn Deal Eads; daughter, Cynthia Williams of Charleston, W.Va.; son, Lewis Eads of Naoma, W.Va.; stepdaughters, Rita Long of Asheboro, Annette Stacy of Oceana, W.Va.; stepson, Ralph C.
