MT. GILEAD - Sara Durham Almond, 62, of 210 E. Allenton St., died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at her home.
Memorial service will be 5 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Chris Cadenhead officiating. Burial will be private.
She was a native of Burgaw, a 1957 graduate of Burgaw High School and a 1961 graduate of Pfeiffer College. She was one of the founders and directors of the Montgomery Crisis Council and a retired social worker and teacher's aid in the Montgomery County Schools.
Surviving are husband, Jones E. Almond Jr. of the home; sons, Jones E. "Van" Almond III of Johnson City, Tenn., John D. Almond of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Thomas D. Almond of Mt. Gilead; brother, Everette L. Durham Jr. of Burgaw; four grandchildren.
The family will be at the home 7-9 p.m. Monday and immediately after the memorial service.

EDENTON - Nell Welch Elder, 90, of 120 Country Club Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Skilled Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital, Edenton.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Siler City, where she was a member, with the Rev. Joe Casteel officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City.
She was a native of Lee County and retired owner/operator of the Grey House Dress Shop.
Surviving are daughters, Ruth E. Phillips of Edenton, Dorothy E. Harris of Southport; son, William H. Elder of Siler City; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

CARTHAGE - Elijah L. Wood, 81, formerly of Carthage, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Avante of Wilkesboro in Wilkesboro.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Red Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Carthage, with the Rev. Max Williams officiating.
He was a native of Surry County and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are sons, Dr. John Wood of Elkin, Robert M. Wood and Bobby Dean Wood, both of Carthage; daughter, Rebecca K. Wood of Fayetteville; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - Mullie Kearns Chandler, 85, of 1306 Old Cox Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Boyd Stokes, the Rev. Martha Welch, William B. Chandler Jr. and Richard Garkalns officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
She was the widow of William B. Chandler, a retired floral designer who had worked for both Delk Florist and Gift Shop, and Garner's Florist, and a member of the Blanche McGlohon Sunday School Class and Circle #5 at her church.
Surviving are daughters, Bonnie C. York and Susan C. Garkalns, both of Asheboro; son, Bill Chandler of Richmond, Va.; brother, Baxter E. Kearns of Asheboro; sisters, Mozelle K. Rafferty of Asheboro, Jewell K. Coffey of Kannapolis, Doris K. Frost of Louisville, Ky.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

She was a resident of Randolph County, the widow of Sidney Howard Willetts Sr. and was a retired practical nurse from Randolph Hospital.
Surviving are sisters, Mildred Plaziak of Rhode Island, Florence Burden of Illinois, Jean Westbrook of Surf City, Keel Strickland of Virginia; brothers, Jeff Hollingsworth of Asheboro, Bruce Hollingsworth of Franklinville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

He was a native of Moore County, the widower of Blanche Miller Luck, a farmer and a potter.

THOMASVILLE - Lillie Mae Cooper, 91, of the Oaks of Thomasville, formerly of 379 Liberty Church Road,, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, in Thomasville Medical Center.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville with the Rev. Ronald Mason and the Rev. Michael Reid officiating. Burial will be in Hughes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Charlie Cooper, retired from Amazon Cotton Mill and a member of New Grace Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class.
Surviving are daughters, Dorothy Rackard of Thomasville, Dalphen Brown Elliott of Lexington; stepson, Richard Cooper of California; brother, Tom Varner of Asheboro; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

DENTON - Rev. Charles Willard Pierce, 79, of West Salisbury Street, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Mountain Vista Health Park.
Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Vern Peterson officiating. Burial will be in First Baptist Church Cemetery.
He was a native of Alexander County, a graduate of Fruitland Bible College, South Eastern Baptist Seminary and the School of Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy at N.C. Baptist Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Denton, an ordained Southern Baptist Minister and served as pastor at Russell Grove Baptist Church in Asheboro, Shady Grove Baptist Church in Liberty and Gravel Hill and Summerville Baptist churches, both in Denton, and several other churches as well.
Surviving are wife, Maggie Hall Pierce of the home; son, Wayne Pierce of Wilson; daughter, Faye P. Loflin of Denton; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of Troy High School, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and the retired owner/operator of the Breeze Inn Restaurant. He served as chief judge of precinct 2 for the Democratic Party, and was a member of Troy Masonic Lodge #718, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion.
Surviving are wife, Jane Dennis Kearns of the home; daughters, Breta Gillis and Linda Williamson, both of Troy; sons, Max Kearns II of Dublin, Calif., Mark Kearns of Apex, Tab Kearns of Morrisville; sisters, Ruth Leach and Nancy Brown, both of Troy; brothers, Bill Kearns of Troy, Jimmy Kearns of Asheboro, Don Kearns of High Point; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., a retired carpenter and farmer, of the Baptist faith, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Lee Emerson Sunday School class.
Surviving are sons, Richard Bevier of Bear Creek, Thomas Bevier of Denton; daughter, Jacqueline Young of Denton; brother, Leroy Bevier of Belleville, Mich.; seven grandchildren.

DENTON - Myrtle Carrick Davis, 87, of Old N.C. 49, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Mountain Vista Health Park.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at High Rock Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Johnny Daniel and the Rev. Harold Hammond officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Olin Myers Davis, had worked at Surratt Hosiery, Bisher Hosiery and was retired from Denton Hosiery. She assisted the church treasurer, was a member of the Women's Missionary Group and sang in the choir at her church.
Surviving are daughter, Earline Nance of Asheboro; sisters, Mattie Newsom, Alma Buie, Fallie Carrick and Catherine Parker, all of Denton; one grandchild.
