CARTHAGE - Eunice W. Newell, 75, formerly of Carthage, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Laurels of Hudsonville in Hudsonville, Mich.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Baptist Church, with Pastor Bill Vaughn. Burial will be in Yates-Thagard Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Stokes County and the widow of Clarence Newell.

Surviving are daughters, Vicky Klaver of Grand Rapids, Mich., Kerry Honeycutt of Aberdeen, Judy Hearn of Pinehurst, Pam Kiser of Cameron, Kathy Collier of Carthage; sister, Wilma Secrest of Level Cross; brothers, Ray Whittington of Randleman, Bobby Whittington of Level Cross, Leroy Whittington of Asheboro; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Pam Kiser, Red Hill Road, Cameron.

Jackie C. Clifton
ASHEBORO - Jackie Coe Clifton, 65, of 1118 Oakdale St., Asheboro, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Rushwood Park Wesleyan Church, with Dr. Ron Hamilton, the Rev. Jack Coe and the Rev. Albert Everidge officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Surry County, retired from Black & Decker and of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Surviving are husband, Roy M. Clifton of the home; sons, Mark D. Clifton of the home, Jeffery D. Clifton of Asheboro; daughter, Sherry C. Samuelson of Huntersville; mother, Ethel Webb Coe of Greensboro; sister, Ruth McHone of McLeansville; brothers, Don Coe of Mt. Airy, Webb Coe of Danville, Va.; six grandchildren.

Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

ASHEBORO - James Worth Frye, 78, of 215 E. Pritchard St., Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Entombment will be at Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, worked at Pearl Harbor in the Naval yards during World War II, was owner of National Sewing Machine Co. in Asheboro and Windy's Pancake House in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Surviving are daughter, Dana Faye Frye of New London; son, James Wayne Frye of Simi Valley, Calif.; brother, Lloyd Frye of Asheboro; sister, Willa Mae Cagle of Asheboro; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Hunter T. Immel
ASHEBORO - Hunter Thomas Immel, infant son of Caroline and Tom Immel of 329 Worth St., Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Union Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Copple officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving in addition to the parents are grandparents, Martha and Carl Caudill and Judith Stiehl, all of Asheboro; stepgrandfather, Walter Stiehl of Asheboro.

Opal S. Ives
ASHEBORO - Opal Stout Ives, 77, of 700 S. Main St., Apt. 204, Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at her home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Back Creek Friends Meeting Cemetery, with the Rev. Ray Lambe officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Milton Ives, a homemaker and a member of Back Creek Friends Meeting.

Surviving are daughter, Patricia Ives of Ramseur; sons, Alan Lee Ives of Chesapeake, Va., Mark Ives of Asheboro; sisters, Gladys Paul and Grace Williams, both of Asheboro; brothers, Dock Stout and Carl Stout, both of Asheboro.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Winfred S. Whitt
RANDLEMAN - Winfred Stedman Whitt, 78, formerly of 100 Smith St., died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Asheboro, where he was a member, with the Rev. Edward Tapper officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church cemetery with military honors.

He was a native of Siler City, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, retired from Founders Furniture in Pleasant Garden and a former member of Randleman Lions Club.

Surviving are wife, Reba L. Whitt; daughters, Judy W. Parrish of Randleman, Susan W. Collins of Ramseur, Tammy W. Jordan of Asheboro; son, John E. Whitt of Asheboro; sisters, Wilma W. Maddox of Sanford, Dorothy W. Farmer of Clover, S.C., Annie Ruth Baker of South Carolina; brothers, Donald Whitt of Pittsboro, C. D. Whitt of Sanford; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

BEAR CREEK - Margaret Davis Smith, 65, of 828 Sandy Branch Church Road, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Robert Capps and the Rev. David Martin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, retired manager of Tri-Bio Laboratory and a member of the Wanna Mae Fields Sunday school class at her church.

Surviving are husband, Liston R. Smith of Bear Creek; son, Tony Smith of Bear Creek; daughters, Javetta S. Clark and Jennifer S. Thomas, both of Bear Creek; five grandchildren.

RANDLEMAN - Shirley Johnson Carter, 53, of 401 E. Brown St., died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. R. Curran Welch and the Rev. Raymond Hahn officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Katrina Floyd, Nicole Strickland, Crystal Trotter and Christy Moon, all of Asheboro; mother, Eunice Johnson of Franklinville; four grandchildren.

WHISPERING PINES - Curtis Wall, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pineywood Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Lassiter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, the widower of Marguerite Howell Wall, owner and operator of the former Wall's Esso in Carthage and a retired caddy master at Whispering Pines Country Club.

Surviving are sons, C. Eugene Wall of Greenville, David Wall of Whispering Pines; stepson, Rick Jackson of Brentwood, Tenn.; sisters, Ruby Holland of Lemon Springs, Shirley Lassiter of Cameron, Alma Weston of Mississippi; brothers, Leighton Wall of Portsmouth, Va., Odell Wall of Sanford, Elmer Wall of Spring Lake; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Monday.

RAMSEUR - Novia Davis Cox, 95, of 5528 Joe Dean Trail, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Parks Crossroads Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. James Turner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a member of the Ladies Missionary Society and the choir at her church.

Surviving are husband, Talley Cox; son, Joe Dean Cox of Ramseur; sister, Myrtle Threadgill of Asheboro; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Donald L. Nelson
GREENSBORO - Donald Lee Nelson, 67, of 3239-A Cypress Park Road, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Baptist Church, Randleman, where he was a member, with the Rev. Marvin Patterson and the Rev. Frank Barrett officiating. Burial will be in Old Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and retired from WinterBell Co. in High Point.

Surviving are wife, Patricia Hurley Nelson of Greensboro; son, Marty Hurley of Asheboro; daughters, Wendy Linney of Greensboro, Sherri Fowler of Wilmington; sister, JoAnne Walker of Randleman; three granddaughters.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at 2310 Ford Place, Greensboro.

LIBERTY - Ruth Woods Hemphill, 85, of 1959 Smith-Adkins Road Ext., died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, with the Rev. Kim Snyder officiating. There will be a private committal service.

Surviving are daughters, Frances Dodson of Florida, Linda Huffman of Randleman, Donna Blakely of Asheboro; sons, Leonard Hemphill of Florida, Lester Hemphill of Liberty; sister, Myrtle Hemphill of Archdale; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service.

Grover H. Loyd
RANDLEMAN - Grover Harrison Loyd Jr., 73, formerly of 525 Colonial Loop, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Evergreens of Greensboro.

Graveside service will be noon Thursday at Guilford Memorial Park with the Rev. Phillip Todd Poole and the Rev. Lynn Gordon officiating.

He was a native of Gaston County and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a self-employed furniture maker and a member of Brightwood Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Mattie Louise Phillips; daughter, Lisa Janet Naylor of Eden; step-daughter, Sherrill Dillard of Mesa, Ariz.; sons, Mark Lloyd of Randleman, Clark Anthony Loyd of Greensboro, Hank Ashley Loyd of Kernersville; mother, Luellen S. Lloyd of Statesville; sisters, Shirley Loudsbury of Virginia and Joyce Holland of Statesville; brothers, Clyde Lloyd of Statesville, Bill Lloyd of Florida, Earl Lloyd of New Mexico and Robert Loyd of Belmont; 10 grandchildren.

The family will be at Sechrest Funeral Service, Archdale, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

RANDLEMAN - Geneva Elizabeth Threadgill Rich, 81, formerly of 416 Worth St., died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Fred Reece officiating. Entombment will be at Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Chesterfield, S.C., the widow of Robert A. Rich, a member of First Baptist Church in Randleman and retired from Mr. Jeans in Randleman.

Surviving are sons, James T. Rich and Robert S. Rich of Asheboro; daughters, Nancy Davis of Siler City, Mary Ann Rich of Florence, S.C., Eva Grant of Randleman; sisters, Frances McArthur of Randleman, Jackie Gaddy of Chesterfield, S.C.; half-sister, Sandra Varner of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at her home.

ASHEBORO - Lena Lambeth Phillips, 93, of 230 E. Presnell St., Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Kiker officiating.

She was the widow of Ira M. Phillips, a 1924 graduate of Trinity High School, a 1930 graduate of High Point College, and a member of Archdale Assembly of God.

Surviving are son, Melvin Phillips of Sophia; daughters, Norma P. Kidd of Staley, Cindy P. Oldham of Mebane; sister, Jewel Vaughn of Hagerstown, Md.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

He was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Army veteran, a retired employee of Klopman Mills and a farmer.

Surviving are wife, Alice Elizabeth Cassady of the home; daughters, Maudre L. Carter of Tifton, Ga., Adell Womble of Goldston, Mary C. Franks of Uniontown, Pa., Belinda Gary of Greensboro, Annie R. Johnson, Deborah White, Stella Womble and Vickie White, all of Seagrove, Nettie C. Peterson of Stone Mountain, Ga.; sons, Franklin Cassady of Franklinville, Walter Cassady of Seagrove, Charlie Cassady of Asheboro; sisters, Elsie Robinson, Alberta Brown, Louise James, all of Greensboro; 28 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - Joseph Ray Presnell, 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, in Murrells Inlet.

He was a native of Level Cross, the widower of Doris Skipper Presnell, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a former member of the VFW and Moose Club.

Surviving are daughters, Pat West and Pam Moore, both of Pawleys Island, S.C., Lisa Fry of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; son, Joey Presnell of Pawleys Island, S.C.; stepdaughter, Lynn Williams of Conway, S.C.; sisters, Phyllis Lanier of Sophia, Barbara Garner of Asheboro; brother, Larry Garner of Asheboro; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired farmer and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Surviving are brother, Alton Garner of Asheboro; sister, Epsie G. Needham of Ramseur.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of the sister, 4024 Holly Spring Road, Ramseur.

Timmy W. Norman
TROY - Timmy Wayne Norman, 32, of 307 Chester St., Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Gravside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery, Blaine, with the Rev. Derald Smith officiating.

He was a native of Guilford County and a graduate of East Montgomery High School.

Surviving are mother, Pamela Hammrick of Kannapolis; sister, Wendy Norman of Badin; grandfather, William Austin Norman of Badin; Michael and Marsha Norman, both of the home.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of William H. Norman, 146 Lakemont Road, New London.
