Howard T. White

BEAR CREEK - Howard Taft White, 89, of 1602 Bonlee School Road, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at his home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Edward Hill Friends Meeting Cemetery, with Dr. Linda Greene officiating.

He was a native of Chatham County, a retired farmer and a member of Edward Hill Friends Meeting.

Surviving are brother, Jack White of Ramseur; sister, Margaret W. Adams of Siler City.

The family will be at the home of the sister, 502 E. 2nd St., Siler City.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, is in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian B. Ayers
ARCHDALE - Lillian Brown Ayers, 90, formerly of 141 Renola Drive, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Green Street Baptist Church Chapel, where she was a member, with Dr. Elliot B. Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of High Point High School and Piedmont Business College, a secretary at Asheboro Wholesale, a retired bookkeeper from O.E. Kearns and Son Hosiery Mill, a member of the Archdale-Trinity Home Demonstration Club and the widow of Clyde Ayers.

Surviving are sons, Charles Dwight Ayers of Randleman, Michael B. Ayers of Asheboro; four grandchildren.

Cumby Mortuary in Archdale is in charge of arrangements.

TROY - Mary Lola Morris Brock, 79, of 2860 N.C. 109 N., died Friday, May 15, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Prospect Baptist Church in Troy, where she was a member, with the Rev. Frank Barrett and Rev. Derald Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and retired from Gilead Manufacturing.

Surviving are husband, Arlis Brock of the home; son, Jack Brock of New London; daughters, Frances Brock Moore of Mt. Gilead, Joyce Brock Earnhardt of New Hope, Ileine Brock Morris of Troy; brother, Clem Morris of Troy; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Troy H. Brown

SILER CITY - Troy H. Brown, 77, of 3465 Bonlee/Bennett Road, died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brush Creek Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dwight Jenkins and Rev. Edward Lowder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a self-employed carpenter, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Adult Seniors, the Brotherhood and a former Sunday School teacher at his church.

Surviving are wife, Minnie "Polly" Smith Brown; daughters, Mary Swaim and Carlean Tucker of Siler City, Nancy Dunlap of Bonlee, Barbara Cheek of Bennett, Alice Beavers of Bear Creek; son, the Rev. Troy Edward Brown of Siler City; sister, Evon Muso of Sodas Point, N.Y.; brother, Charles Brown of Bear Creek; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Monday and other times at the home.

Watt Cooley

RANDLEMAN - Woodrow Watson "Watt" Cooley, 83, of 106 Shaw St., died Friday, May 15, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Randleman, where he was a member, with the Rev. Kenneth Reaves and Rev. Fred Reece officiating. Entombment will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Elberton, Ga., a member of the Randleman Lions Club and V.F.W., a former member of the Randleman Board of Aldermen, an Army veteran of World War II and owner/operator of Randleman Monument Company.

Surviving are wife, Mildred B. Cooley of Randleman; daughters, Faye C. Gaster of Randleman, Luanne C. Reeder of Asheboro; sister, Thelma C. Rice of Asheboro; two grandchildren.

Vessie E. Harris

ROCKINGHAM - Vessie Esdale Harris, 79, of 902 Hilcrest Drive, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Eastside Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Faggart and Rev. Leonard Mayo officiating.

She was a native of Richmond County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Reid Harris Jr. of the home; sons, Mike Harris of Richmond, Va., Ray Harris of Winston-Salem; sisters, Irene Kivett of Asheboro, Pauline Mesmer of Newport News, Va.; brother, Harold McRae of Kenly.

The family will be at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Debra C. Hewitt

LELAND - Debra Cagle Hewitt, 35, of 9765 Old Mill Road, Lot 3, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Bethel Friends Meeting Cemetery in Asheboro.

She was a native of Greensboro.

Surviving are daughters, Meredith Denise Hewitt, Elizabeth Marie Hewitt of the home; brothers, Bradley Meredith Cagle of Burgaw, Alan Hugh Cagle of Wilmington; sisters, Annette Kellam of Greensboro, Carlene Marie Anderson of Nashville, Tenn.; grandmother, Margaret H. Hill of Nashville, Tenn.

LIBERTY - Leah Danielle Hogan, 19, of 7301 Isaac Drive, died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Cool Springs Baptist Church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Surviving are mother, Karen Ferguson of Laurinburg; father and stepmother, Mitchell and Carol Hogan of Asheboro; half-sister, Brittany Erin Morton; stepsister, Renee Williams; grandmothers, Carolyn Ferguson of Liberty and Mary Hogan of Asheboro.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Sunday and other times at the home of Carolyn Ferguson, 7301 Isaac Road, Liberty, and the home of Mitchell Hogan, 1911 Oak Drive, Asheboro.

Mary Lawrence

TROY - Mary McCaskill Beaman Lawrence, 81, of Firsthealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, died Friday, May 15, 1998 at her residence.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Southside Cemetery in Troy with the Rev. Chuck Cook and Rev. James Brady officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a nursing assistant.

Surviving are daughters, Glenda Maness of Troy, Clara Robinson of Hartsville, S.C.; brother, John McCaskill of Biscoe; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Pugh Funeral Home Troy is in charge of arrangements.

Cassie Morgan

RANDLEMAN - Cassie Ann Morgan, infant daughter of Charles Edward Morgan Jr. and Carmen Hettinger Morgan, of 5489 U.S. 220 Business N., died Friday, May 15, 1998, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Randolph Memorial Park with the Rev. Raymond Hettinger officiating.

Surviving in addition to the parents are sister, Erica Miller of Randleman; grandparents, Maxine Ruth Hettinger and Ted and Edna Casey, all of Randleman.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home Randleman noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Velma J. Phillips

BEAR CREEK - Velma Jones Phillips, 87, of 6414 N.C. 42, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Fair Promise United Methodist Church, where she was a member and Sunday School teacher, with the Rev. Bob Fletcher and Rev. Jefferson Davis officiating.

She was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Earl Phillips of Bear Creek, Gerald Phillips of Siler City; one grandchild.

Joyce-Brady Funeral Home in Bennett is in charge of arrangements.

Harold C. Rush

TRINITY - Harold Clark Rush Sr., 80, of 12093 Trinity Road, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel-Glenola United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, an Army veteran of World War II, and retired from J.I. Yarborough Construction Company.

Surviving are wife, Mary Gray Rush of the home; daughters, Shelbie Prevoid of Thomasville, Pamela Fairley of Kernersville; sons, Charles Gray of Miami, Fla., James Rush and Ricky Rush of Trinity, Harold Rush Jr. of High Point; brother, Frank Rush of Glenola; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1:30 p.m. Sunday and other times at the home.

Ethel Waycaster

DENTON - Ethel Woodle Tysinger Waycaster, 79, of Mountain Vista Health Park, formerly of Regan Road, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Briggs Funeral Home Denton Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Fairview United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, a former employee of Carolina Underwear Company and the widow of Glade Tysinger.

Surviving are sons, Joe Tysinger and J.C. Tysinger of Denton; brothers, Garl Woodle of Denton, Don Woodle of Lexington; sisters, Grace Garner of Denton, Burnice Cranford of Charlotte, Lucy Class of Suffolk, Va.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Sunday and other times at the residence of Joe Tysinger, 1135 Johnson Road, Denton.

DENTON - Charlie Edward Wilson, 63, of 21079 N.C. 8, died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

A graveside service was 4 p.m. Monday at Clear Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Anne Mussleman officiating.

He was a native of Davidson County, a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Clear Springs United Methodist Church and a former employee of Surratt Hosiery Mills.

Surviving are wife, JoAnn Potts Wilson of the home; sons, Eddie Wilson of Ramseur, Ricky Wilson of Thomasville, John Wilson of Denton; daughter, Connie Whiting of Kernersville; brother, Robert Wilson of Lexington; sister, Hazel Leonard of Salisbury; six grandchildren.

TROY - Joseph Gainey, 81, of 402 S. Russell St., died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Covington Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Terry Streeter officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

He was the widower of Sarah Harrington Gainey.

Surviving are daughters, Louise G. Bennett of Dorchester, Mass., Sarah Young of High Point, Carolyn Gainey of Troy; sons, Gilbert Gainey of High Point, Joe D. Gainey of New York; brothers, Perry Gainey of Troy, R.D. Gainey, Arthur Gainey, both of Greensboro; 29 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

He was a native of Montgomery County and a farmer.

Surviving are wife, Louise Rushing Haywood of the home; daughter, Wanda Haywood Morris of Biscoe; sisters, Jessie Campbell, Margie Green, both of Biscoe, Essie Sexton of Candor; brothers, Conley Haywood of Candor, Paul Haywood of Biscoe, Leo Haywood of Star; one grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of the daughter, 328 McCaskill Road, Biscoe.

Dan Lewis

SALISBURY - Daniel Lewis, 84, formerly of Freedom Drive, Asheboro, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at Rowan Regional Hospital, Salisbury.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Adrian Pugh officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Moore County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Union Carbide.

Surviving are wife, Maudie Dunn Maynor Lewis of Salisbury; sisters, Etta Lewis Maness, Ethel Lewis Kennedy, both of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-2 p.m. Tuesday.
