ASHEBORO - Mable Lavoy Leonard Hendley, 80, of 607 Colony Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Asheboro United Church of Christ, where she was a member, with the Rev. Eric Jennings officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Stanly County, the widow of Ernest M. Hendley, retired from Roses Stores after 25 years, and a member of the Cox-Wright Circle at her church.

Surviving are daughter, Nancy Nall of Asheboro; half brother, Lamont Leonard of Kannapolis; half sister, Gladys Paunch of Kannapolis; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

ASHEBORO - Max Lee Phillips, 60, of 156 E. Academy St., Apt. 214, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Neil C. Poole officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Asheboro, worked for many years at Dixie Furniture and was a volunteer with the Randolph County Senior Adults Association.

Surviving are wife, Wanda G. Phillips of Asheboro; mother, Bessie O. Phillips of Asheboro; brother, Barney G. Phillips of Asheboro; sister, Cotoy J. Copen of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

John W. Callicutt
RANDLEMAN - John Wesley Callicutt, 77, of 204 Russell Walker Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Whites Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jeff Joyce officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Jockey International, played in the Deep River Semi-Pro Baseball League and was a former girls' softball team coach at Randleman High School.

Surviving are wife, Betty Rumsey Callicutt of Randleman; daughter, Andie Presnell of Randleman; sons, Ronald Lee Callicutt and David Callicutt, both of Randleman; brother, Jesse Lee Callicutt of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

RAMSEUR - Louise Woody Brown, 73, of 432 Brady St. Ext., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with Brother Mike Moody and Brother Ben Harrell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, retired from Randolph Hospital and from the Senior Adults Association, and she attended Ramseur Gospel Chapel.

Surviving are sons, Bill Brown of Randleman, Ronnie Brown of Ramseur; daughter, Nancy B. Allred of Ramseur; brother, David Woody of Pittsboro; sisters, Alice Alford of Chapel Hill, Lois Phillips of Sanford; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of the daughter, 472 Brady St. Ext., Ramseur.

LIBERTY - John Ralph Overman, 96, of 2442 Ralph Overman Lane, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Howard Spray officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Alamance County, the widower of Nellie Overman and retired from Monarch Hosiery in Burlington.

Surviving are daughter, Jenny Welch of Burlington; sons, Larry "Bud" Overman, Roger W. Overman, Jack D. Overman, all of Liberty; half brother, Harold Overman of Liberty; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Center Methodist Church, the widow of Herbert Lanier, and had worked at Burlington Industries, Denton Plant, and Ultramek.

TROY - Oscar Eugene "Gene" Bristow, 71, of 104 Brown St., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Wesleyan Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Douglas W. Beadle officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

He was a native of Hoke County, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a retired automobile dealer.

Surviving are sister, Polly Brown of Troy; brother, Bill Bristow of Raleigh.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Bill Bristow, 517 Wooley St., Troy.

Fannie L. Baldwin
ASHEBORO - Fannie L. Baldwin, 77, formerly of 631 Frank St., Asheboro, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater St. John Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. J.F. Kearns officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvery Cemetery.

She was a native of Anniston, Ala., a member of the garden club and active in many church organizations.

Surviving are sisters, Helen Davenport of San Francisco, Calif., Margurite William of Sacramento, Calif., and Virginia Crawford of Bronx, N.Y.; brother, Joe W. Crawford of Mobile, Ala.

The family will be at the church from 10:30-11 a.m. Saturday.

ASHEBORO - Christopher "Chris" James Burton, 28, formerly of 2035 Staley's Farm Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Jonathan Shook and the Rev. Maxton Craven officiating.

He was a native of Davidson County and attended Eastern Randolph High School. He attended Bailey's Grove Baptist Church and was employed with Express Car Wash.

Surviving are mother, Eleanor A. Burton of Southport; fiancee, Mandy Hildreth of Asheboro; sons, Kristofer Lucas Burton, of the home, and Coty James Burton of Asheboro; daughter, Katheryne Michelle Burton, of the home; brother, Gary Burton of Ramseur.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 1-2:30 p.m. Sunday, other times at his home and the home of his brother, Gary Burton, 4566 Roundleaf Road, Ramseur.

CARTHAGE - Emily Rose Coe, 18, of Cleveland, Tenn., formerly of Carthage, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Red Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. D.C. Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are parents, Tim and Donna Coe of Cleveland, Tenn.; sisters; Karen Coe Willett of Sanford and Laura Coe Thomas of West End; grandmother, Doris Coe of Sanford.

Cola G. Presnell
ASHEBORO - Cola Gallimore Presnell, 92, of 423 E. Kivett St., Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Dr. Donald W. Haynes officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Denton, the widow of Tom Presnell, and a 1931 nursing graduate of High Point Hospital. She served as a private duty nurse in Asheboro, had worked at Randolph Hospital and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Asheboro.

Surviving are daughter, Anne Presnell of Hillsborough; sister, Lala Cates of High Point; half brother, Rondall "Horseshoe" Gallimore of Denton; half sister, Doris Pierce of Denton.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday.

ASHEBORO - Marie James Scott, 72, of 939 Sequoia Ave., Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at her home.

She was a native of Alexander County, the widow of Harley Edwin Scott and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are daughter, Barbara Underwood of Sophia; sons, Gary Scott and Richard "Rick" Scott, both of Asheboro; sisters, Nell Davis and Ethel Williams, both of Asheboro, Shirley Yow of Seagrove, Pauline Harrington of Taylorsville; brother, Ned James of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

TROY - Yesenia Velazco Bravo, infant daughter of Beatriz Velazco and Daniel Bravo of 3194 Troy Candor Road, Biscoe, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Candor Cemetery.

Surviving in addition to the parents are grandparents, Antonio Velazco of Candor, Elena Guzman of Siler City, Natalio Bravo of Tennessee, Ana Martinez of Mexico.

ASHEBORO - Mabel I. Elsner, 84, of 344 Chaney Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Erlanger Hospital, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with Pastor Glen Garver officiating. Burial will be in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery, Franklinville.

She was a native of Owatonna, Minn., retired from the Owatonna Canning Company and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Surviving are son, Richard Elsner of Ooltewah, Tenn.; daughter, Judy Maness of Asheboro; sister, Hattie Goutermont of Park Rapids, Minn.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Virginia S. Sanford
ASHEBORO - Virginia Self Sanford, 80, of 617 Holly St., Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Calvary United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Edward S. Tapper officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Lincolnton, the widow of William Blythe Sanford, and studied business at Western Carolina University. She worked in payroll for various area companies, taught the first kindergarten class at Central School, was a teacher and librarian at Brower and Tabernacle schools and also taught knitting at Randolph Community College. She was a member of Randolph Chapter #210 Order of the Eastern Star and bowled in the Sleepwalker League and City All-Star League at Family Sports Center.

Surviving is daughter, Rhonda S. Hicks of Asheboro.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

She was a native of Stanly County, a member of Big Oak Christian Church and a homemaker.

ASHEBORO - Ellen Jean Harvell Davis, 41, of 1668 Iron Mountain Road, Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Thomas Smith officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, a 1978 graduate of Eastern Randolph High School and a 1982 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, attended Richland Baptist Church and was employed as Systems Information Officer at Randolph Bank and Trust.

Surviving are husband, Chris Davis of the home; son, Jared Davis of the home.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

He was a native of Lee County, employed with Strickland Construction Co., a race car driver at Caraway Speedway and a member of the youth group at Grace Chapel Christian Church.
