Siler City - John Robert "Bobby" Brown, 69, of 900 West Dolphin St., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at SunBridge Care Facilities, Siler City.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Gooch officiating.

He was a native of Chatham County and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are mother, Madgalene Johnson Brown of Siler City; sister, Nancy Tysor of Siler City.

The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

ASHEBORO - Charlotte Althea Russell Ammons, 66, of 976 Old N.C. 49, Asheboro, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Oakhurst Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Richard Crider and the Rev. Rob Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Clayton Ammons and retired from Yates Country Ham as a secretary.

Surviving are daughter, Kim Farlow of Asheboro; son, Dean Farlow of Asheboro; stepson, Henry C. Ammons of Asheboro; one grandson.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of the daughter at 1849 Saddlewood Court, Asheboro, and the son at 262 N.C. 49 South, Asheboro.

George O. Hughes
ASHEBORO - George Olindo Hughes, 79, of 1449 Old Liberty Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Veteran's Administration Hospital, Salisbury.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Alvin Powell and the Rev. Danny Jarrell officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Mary L. Hughes, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and former owner/operator of Hughes Amoco, Central Falls.

Surviving are daughter, Orphia Brown of Asheboro; sons, Timothy Hughes and George T. Hughes, both of Asheboro; brothers, Richard Hughes of Asheboro, Marvin Hughes of Ramseur; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-2 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of George and Verda Hughes, 3235 Shady Forest Road, Randleman.

ASHEBORO - Catherine Cole Munn, 87, of 428 Kimberly Drive, Asheboro, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Lee Roy Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Mecklenburg County, the widow of Mack Munn, a member of Grace United Methodist Church, retired from B.B. Walker Co. and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Brenda Edmonds and Lib Hayes, both of Asheboro; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 2:30-4 p.m. Sunday.

RAMSEUR - Evelyn Owens Briles, 90, of 3120 Parks Cross Roads Church Road, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the home of her niece.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. James Stowe officiating. Burial will be in Community Baptist Church Cemetery, Siler City.

She was a native of Montgomery County, retired from Laughlin Hosiery Mill and attended Whites Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving is husband, Glenn A. Briles of the home.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of niece, Rogerlin Wright, 3120 Parks Cross Roads Church Road, Ramseur.

JULIAN - R.D. Bowman, 60, of 7000 Hemphill Road, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Red Cross Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Bud Rowe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County, a supervisor with Liberty Chair Co. for 21 years and a member of American Legion Post 81 in Liberty.

Surviving are wife, Rebecca W. Bowman of the home; daughter, Robin Frazier of Julian; son, Kenneth Barker of Siler City; mother, Ruby Bowman of Julian; sisters, Clara Holder and Lucy Trotter, both of Asheboro, Marylee Pike of Liberty; brothers, Gurney Bowman and Roy Bowman, both of Julian, Troy Bowman of Randleman, Billy Bowman of Greensboro; three grandchildren.

DENTON - Barbara Jane "Bobo" Garner, 57, of Seven Springs, formerly of Denton, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center of Goldsboro.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Dan McClure officiating. Burial will be in Tom's Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County.

She was a native of Moore County, a member of the Ladies Sunday School class at her church and retired from Milliken Co.

Surviving are husband, Billy M. Maness of the home; son, Tommy R. Maness of Asheboro; daughter, Lisa M. Lefler of Concord; father, Ollie W. Hussey of Robbins; brother, J.C. Hussey of Robbins; five grandchildren.

CARTHAGE - Grady F. Foster, 85, formerly of Putnam, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cool Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Clarence Garner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, the widower of Ruth Seawell Foster, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and retired from Stanley Furniture in West End.

Surviving are daughter, Judith F. Phillips of Carthage; sisters, May Dollar of Sanford, Helen Montsinger of West End, Alma Seawell of Carthage; brother, Eugene Foster of Ashley Heights; one grandson.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Judy Seawell, 716 Walnut St., Carthage.

Hazel M. Dollar
LAKELAND, Fla. - Hazel Maynard Dollar, 79, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will 4 p.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, Lakeland, Fla.

She was a native of Moore County, attended Randolph Technical Institute and was a member of United Church of Christ, both in Asheboro. She was a licensed practical nurse and worked at Burlington Industries in Ramseur and at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

Surviving are husband, William I. Dollar of Lakeland, Fla.; daughter, Mary Jo Harville of Lakeland, Fla.; son, Mike Olivo of Reidsville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Heath Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Lakeland, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

ASHEBORO - Ellen Anita Isom Dawkins, 66, of 4132 Friendship Road, Asheboro, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Church of God of Prophecy, where she was a member, with the Rev. Jack Kivett and the Rev. Junior Dawkins officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Roanoke, Va., a homemaker and a volunteer at Randolph Hospital.

Surviving are husband, Lloyd L. Dawkins Sr. of the home; daughters, Dianna Robbins of Asheboro, Tresa Dawkins of the home; sons, Lloyd L. Dawkins Jr. and Wade C. Dawkins, both of Asheboro; sisters, Elsie Fisher, Ella Thompson, Esther Surratt, Mary Brady, all of Asheboro, Evelyn Bowman of New Hope, Glenda Gregory of Hillsville; brothers, R.W. Isom of Ramseur, Sonny Isom and Pete Isom, both of Asheboro; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Michael R. Bowman
RANDLEMAN - Michael Ray Bowman, 44, of 1234 Loara St., Anaheim, Calif., formerly of Randleman, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Anaheim Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a native of Randolph County, attended Randleman High School, employed as manager of Garden Court Apartments in Anaheim and had received a CAM degree in apartment management.

Surviving are wife, Candy Matucci Bowman; son, Nicholas Bowman of Anaheim, Calif.; sisters, Debbie Crutchfield of Liberty, Teresa Pugh and Rhonda Ratcliffe, both of Asheboro, Vicky Foster of Randleman; brothers, Tim Bowman of Asheboro, Ricky Bowman of Randleman.

Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Lewallen
HIGH POINT - Richard "Jack" Lewallen, 75, of 3728 Bethel Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, with the Rev. Tim Huffman officiating. Burial will be in South Plainfield Friends Meeting Cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are wife, Irene Hunt Lewallen of High Point; daughters, Cindy Ruden of High Point, Lynna Smith of Sophia; sister, Veechel Kennedy of High Point; brother, Clarence Lewallen of Sophia; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

FRANKLINVILLE - Luna Johnson Elberson, 82, of Academy Road Ext., died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Clapp's Nursing Home, Asheboro.

She was a native of Randolph County, retired from Burlington Industries, a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and attended Franklinville Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are sons, Henry Elberson of Franklinville, Larry Elberson of Ramseur, Joe Elberson of Asheboro; daughters, Betty Brown and Linda Merritt, both of Asheboro; sisters, Gladys Hudson and Ruby Miller, both of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Durham County, a truck driver and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

BENNETT - Clara Phillips Estridge, 76, of 388 Chirpy Road, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Chirpy Estridge, retired from Ithica Hosiery in Robbins and recently worked at Chirpy's Barbeque.

Surviving are son,Tommy Estridge of Bennett; daughters, Cindy Ellis of Glen Allen, Va., Linda Brady of Bennett; brother, Elbert Phillips of Troy; six grandchildren.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Mary F. Ewing
MT. GILEAD - Mary Frances Ewing, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Clare Bridge, Chapel Hill.

Celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Jim Harris officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery.

She was a 1940 graduate of Greensboro College and a graduate of Appalachian State University with an master's degree and a first-grade teacher in Lemon Springs, Albemarle and Charlotte. She also taught U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps dependents in Germany, Japan and Quantico, Va.

Surviving are sisters, Ina E. Haywood of Mt. Gilead, Anne E. Carroll of Durham.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday.
