RAMSEUR - Henry Brantley "Buss" Vickory, 93, of 1391 Church St., Ramseur, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Cross Roads Retirement Community, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Richard Wright officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and was retired from the Town of Ramseur.

Surviving is sister, Clara Spencer of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Clint B. Scott

SILER CITY - Clint Boyd Scott, 76, of 4745 Old Coleridge Road, formerly of Greensboro, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Ronald Blakley officiating. Burial will be in Deep River Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, employed as a barber for 44 years, was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church in Greensboro.

Surviving are wife, Opal Keaton Scott of the home; son, Michael L. Scott of Greensboro; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Murphy S. Alston

SILER CITY - Murphy S. Alston of 1106 N. Fifth Ave., died Monday, May 25, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Lambert Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. William Harrington officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County.

Surviving are husband, Charles N. Alston; sons, Edward Siler, Anthony Alston, both of Siler City, Angelo B. Alston of High Point, Charles Alston of Pine Forge, Pa.; daughter, Cynthia Harrington of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sister, Ava M. Siler of Siler City; brothers, Floyd H. Siler of High Point, James Siler, Andrew "Jack" Siler, both of Siler City, Nathaniel Siler of Bear Creek, Lester Siler of Coleridge; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Corinth A.M.E. Zion Church, Siler City, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Farrar Funeral Home, Siler City, is in charge of the arrangements.

HIGHFALLS - Beulah N. Martindale, 82, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Pinehurst Nursing Center, Pinehurst.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage.

Lewis Bowen Jr.
Lewis Bowen Jr., 74, of 306 Uwharrie St., Asheboro, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Kentucky, a retired coal miner and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are daughter, Melody Maynor of Asheboro; sons, Roger Crihfield, Lewis Bowen III, Curtis Ray Bowen, Billy Joe Bowen, all of Asheboro; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Eva VunCannon Shaw, 77, of 1510 Westmont Court, Asheboro, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Lewis Dolph Pritchard, 80, of 2408 Fairview Farm Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Balfour Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ed Houck and Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Charlotte United Methodist Church Cemetery, Asheboro.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired dairy farmer and a deacon and Sunday School teacher at his church for over 50 years.

Surviving are sons, Roger Pritchard, L.D. Pritchard, both of Asheboro; daughters, Baxter B. Celia Oliver, Farrell Cynthia Wilson, Sue Daughtry, all of Asheboro; sisters, Truman Pritchard, Anna Lee Johnson, both of Asheboro, Margaret Benedict of St. Cloud, Fla., Phyllis Palmer of Columbia, S.C., Sarah Glover of Charleston, S.C., Elizabeth Buchanan of Reston, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of a daughter, Celia Oliver, 312 Luck Road.

RANDLEMAN - Billy Gene Suit, 66, of 111 Smith St., died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Philip King and the Rev. Lee Carter officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park with military honors.

He was a native of Newberry, S.C., attended Central Cathedral Church of God in Randleman, was a retired store detective from Belks, Greensboro, a ham radio operator and a Korean War U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Grace Bell Suit of Randleman; daughters, Debbie M. White of Greensboro, Josephine Ownsbey, Karen Richardson, both of Randleman, Cynthia Boyce of Asheboro; son, Thomas E. Suit of Asheboro; brother, Donald E. Suit of Savannah, Ga.; 11 grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home noon-1:30 p.m. Friday.

Neva C. Griffin

RANDLEMAN - Neva Cooper Griffin, 78, of 1933 Gold Hill Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Arnold Luther and the Rev. Boyd Kistler officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, a retired employee of Stone Shoes and a member of Midway Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are sons, Darrell Griffin of Randleman, Jim Griffin of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Ruth Ann Wood of Sophia; sisters, Ruth Sink of the home, Colleen Warren of Greensboro; brothers, Dale Richardson of Vancouver, Wash., E.K. Richardson of Randleman, Don Richardson of Lexington; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

SILER CITY - Elbert G. Johnson, 87, of 185 Elbert Johnson Road, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Meroney United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Richard Farmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a retired painter and a member of the Adult Sunday School class at his church.

Surviving are wife, Hazel Castevens Johnson; sons, Jesse Johnson of Siler City, Danny Johnson of Bear Creek; daughters, Judy George of Pittsboro, Janice White of Salisbury, Katherine Payne of Sanford; brothers, Raymond P. Johnson of Burlington, Jesse Johnson of Charlotte, Frank Reid Johnson of Greensboro, Hurley Johnson of Morganton, Clyde Johnson of Siler City; sister, Effie Johnson of Silk Hope; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Carolyn F. Benjamin

BISCOE - Carolyn Freeman Benjamin, 55, of 140 Cole Lane, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Big Oak Christian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where she was a choir member and was employed with Pinehurst Hotel for 11 years.

Surviving are husband, Erskin Quince Benjamin of the home; daughter, Alah Daywalt of Mt. Gilead; mother, Marie Freeman of Biscoe; sister, Peggy F. Wicker of Arcadia, Fla.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Julius Horvath

CARTHAGE - Julius Horvath, 84, of 348 Cool Springs Road, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Pinelake Health Care, Carthage.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a retired employee of Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, Pa.

Surviving are sister, Helen Black of Philadelphia, Pa.; brother, Harold Horvath of Carthage.

Fry-Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, is in charge of the arrangements.

Beulah N. Martindale

HIGHFALLS - Beulah N. Martindale, 82, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Pinehurst Nursing Center, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highfalls Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Bobby Marsh officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County.

Surviving are sisters, Thelma M. Jessup, Sadie Whitsell, Annie Ruth Crabtree, all of Highfalls; brother, H. Russell Martindale of Highfalls.

Mack Marshall Hiatt, 70, formerly of 2532-A 16th St., Greensboro, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a native of Martinsville, Va.

Surviving are daughter, Jackie Marie Hiatt of Asheboro; son, Michael Lee Hiatt of Asheboro; sisters, Lois Perry of Grays Chapel, Evangeline Ussery of High Point, Josephine Walker of Greensboro; one grandchild.

She was the widow of both Paul C. Vuncannon and Elvin Lee Shaw and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Diane V. Feemster of Raleigh, Wanda V. Land of Roswell, Ga.; sons, Steve Vuncannon, Mike Vuncannon, both of Asheboro; sisters, Dot Kemp of Asheboro, Jewell Ridge of Salisbury; brother, Roy Cashatt of Aurora, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

GIBSONVILLE - Huey Long Newsom, 62, of 5936 Bethel Church Road, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Twin Oaks Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Cone Mills Corp., attended Twin Oaks Pentecostal Holiness Church and assisted in wildlife rehabilitation.

Surviving are wife, Irene Jenkins Newsom of the home; granddaughter, Alicia Dawn Newsom of the home; son, Gary Lee Newsom of Gibsonville; brother, Norman Newsom of Asheboro; sister, Dorothy Cooper of Asheboro.

The family will be at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, North Elm Street, Greensboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Evelyn G. Durham

Evelyn "Lyn" Glass Durham, 73, of 939 Walton Court, Asheboro, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro.

She was a native of Greensboro, a graduate of Greensboro High School and Woman's College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro), a former teacher in High Point, Greensboro and Asheboro, corporate secretary of Durham Printing Co. Inc. and retired as chairman of the business department of Randolph Community College, where she taught for 25 years. She was a member of the Administrative Board, Circle #5 and a former UMYF counselor at her church, past president of the Asheboro Garden Club Council, former board member of the Asheboro Memorial Foundation and the American Red Cross, and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Asheboro Rotary Club.

Surviving are husband, Don W. Durham of the home; sons, Carey Martin Durham of Troy and D. Richard Durham of Asheboro; sister, Lois Glass Morgan of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home Asheboro 7-9 p.m. Sunday.
