Judge Hiram H. Ward
DENTON - Judge Hiram H. Ward, 78, of Grosvenor Place, Winston-Salem, and Forest Park Drive, Denton, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at his home in Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Vern Peterson officiating. Burial will be a private service at the Ward Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and awarded the Air Medal Presidential Unit Citation and the Bronze Star. He received his law degree from Wake Forest College, practiced law in Denton and Lexington, was U.S. District Judge for the Middle District of N.C. and the Chief Judge of the District. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Masons.

Surviving are wife, Evelyn McDaniel Ward of the home; sons, William M. "Bill" Ward of Denton, J. Randolph "Randy" Ward of Cary; brother, Leslie Ward of Tallahassee, Fla.; sister, Katherine W. Spencer Peters of High Point; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6-8 p.m. Saturday, and immediately following the service on Sunday.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Magena R. Baldwin
TROY - Magena Rochelle Baldwin, 35, of 619 S. Main St. died, Sunday, March 31, 2002.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Troy Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will be in Freeman Hill Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a 1983 graduate of West Montgomery High School, Mt. Gilead, and an employee of the Montgomery Herald.

Surviving are son, Robert Andre Marshall; mother, Willett Rush Baldwin of Troy; brother, Leonard Baldwin of Troy.

The family will be at the home of the mother.

Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, is in charge of arrangements.

Gerald W. Kennedy
STAR - Gerald William Kennedy, 56, of 669 Cotton Creek Road, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Lake Tillery.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Biscoe Cemetery, with the Rev. David Beck officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Page Memorial United Methodist Church, a U.S. Army veteran and the general manager of Triad Masonry in Asheboro.

Surviving are wife, Gina Furr Kennedy of the home; daughters, Amy Williamson of Robbins, Kelly Brewer of Biscoe; son, Todd Kennedy of Star; sister, Jane K. Haywood of Mt. Gilead; brother, Richard C. Kennedy of Asheboro; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

ASHEBORO - Jerry Wayne Beaver, 53, of 68 Forest Brook Circle, Asheboro, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Jonathan Shook, the Rev. Timmy Strider and the Rev. David Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County and an employee with Klaussner Furniture Industries.

Surviving are wife, Ann Peele Beaver; son, Terry Beaver of the home; daughter, Marsha Beaver of the home; brother, Homer Beaver of Asheboro; sister, Allene Hardison of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Pearlmon C. Pickett Sr.
ASHEBORO - Pearlmon Clarence Pickett Sr., 83, of 427 Hawthorne Drive, Asheboro, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Sam Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of Farmer High School, a retired salesman and a member of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are wife, Mildred Ferree Pickett of the home; daughter, Janice P. Kearns of Asheboro; sons, Pearlmon C. "Buddy" Pickett Jr. of Conway, S.C., R. David Pickett of Star; sister, Annie P. Dorsett of Asheboro and Algie P. Caviness of Asheboro; brother, Johnny R. Pickett of Asheboro; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Swanie B. Luther
SEAGROVE - Swanie Bell Brower Luther, 85, formerly of Seagrove, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Autumn Care in Biscoe.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Monday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Michael Holyfield officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker, a member of Union Grove Baptist Church and the widow of Eddie Franklin Luther.

Surviving are sisters, Mildred Blackmon and Madie Lea Brower, both of Seagrove; brothers, W. Curtis Brower of Asheboro, J. Hubert Brower of Randleman and J.A. Brower of Deming, N.M.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, one stepgreat-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the residence of her daughter-in-law, Ann Luther, 7036 Erect Road, Seagrove.

Nora M. Russell
RANDLEMAN - Nora Melton Russell, 70, formerly of Steed Road, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale. Interment will follow in the Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County, a former employee of Vesture Inc. in Asheboro and the widow of William H. Russell.

Surviving are daughters, Joan Russell and Tammy Parker, both of Asheboro, and Sharon Cooper of High Point; son, Kent Russell of Asheboro; brother, Calvin Melton of Archdale; sister, Doris Asthley of Lincolnton; three grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Marvin B. Garner
ROBBINS - Marvin Bartis Garner, 84, of 3979 N.C. 705, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Smyrna United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Joseph Forbes and the Rev. Jimmie Tatum officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a house painter.

Surviving are daughter, Jerlene G. Dunn of Seagrove; granddaughter, Wendy Garner Kennedy of the home; brother, Earl Garner of Robbins; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the residence of Jerlene Dunn, 1007 S. N.C. 705, Seagrove.

Peggie C. Price
SILER CITY - Peggie Catherine "Cat" Price, 74, of 34 Colonial Park Road, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wesley Chapel Christian Fellowship Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. J.L. Moore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County.

Surviving are sons, William "Bud" Price of Bear Creek, Larry Price of Siler City, Jerry "Pete" Price of Winston-Salem; daughters, Gladys P. Foxx of Siler City, Dorothy P. Harris of Sanford, Tammie Price and Penny Brewington, both of Siler City and Tina P. Martin of Asheboro; 17 grandchildren.

The family will be at Farrar Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-8 p.m. Sunday.

Jerry D. Sessoms
BEAR CREEK - Jerry D. Sessoms, 36, of 1010 Oakley Baptist Church Road, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Church in Siler City, where he was a member, with the Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Sampson County and a graduate of Mendenhall's Auctioneer School.

Surviving are father, Perry Junior Sessoms of Siler City; mother, Jean Rich Cockman of Bear Creek; brother, Jeff Sessoms of Siler City; grandmothers, Minnie Peterson Sessoms of Bear Creek and Edna Pegram of North Wilksboro; grandfather, Claude Rich of Wilmington.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of his mother, Jean R. Cockman, 4902 Devils Tramping Ground Road, Bear Creek.

John R. Hall
SILER CITY - John Robert Hall, 57, of 10175 N.C. 9O2, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Meroney United Methodist Church in Bear Creek, where he was a member, with the Rev. Warren Owens officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Lee County and a farmer.

Surviving are wife, Mamie Burke Hall of Siler City; son, R. Bruce Hall of Bear Creek; daughter, Sherry H. Thurman of Bear Creek; brothers, Arthue Lee Whitt of Mt. Airy and David Lee Whitt of Elizabeth City; sister, Gloria Ann Lanier of Lexington; one granddaughter; two stepgranddaughters.

The family will be at Smith and Bukner Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

J. Howard Harris
CARTHAGE - J. Howard Harris, 83, of Dowd Road, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Monroe officiating. Burial will be in the Harris Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran, a 51-year member of The Joseph G. Henson Post #12 of the American Legion and a retired farmer.

He is survived by his brother, R. Flynn Harris of Shrewsbury, Pa.

Elden E. Siers
ASHEBORO - Elden Enos Siers, 74, of 230 E. Presnell St., Asheboro, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

A private service will be held at a later date.

He was a native of Carl, W.Va., and a worker for 25 years at Thomasville Furniture.

Surviving are son, Kim Siers of Randleman; daughter, Cheryl S. Clodfelter of Thomasville; brother, Telden Siers of Carl, W.Va.; two grandchildren.

Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel J. Watson
RAMSEUR - Samuel Jerome Watson, of 1223 N.C. 49 North, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Nebo Holiness Church, with Bishop Emanuel Holland officiating. Burial will be in Oakland-McCrary Cemetery.

Surviving are mother, Mable Watson of Ramseur; sons, Thomas Patterson, Rick Patterson, Jerry Patterson and Samuel Watson Jr., all of Durham; daughters, Edna Mitchell, Paulette Patterson, Tamatha Carmon, Michelle Seymour, all of Durham, Teresa Mitchell of Philadelphia, Pa.; brother, Earnel Watson of Ramseur; sisters, Martha Watson, Kelly Cotton and Nora McClain, all of Ramseur, Elizabeth Kimes Norwood of Greensboro; foster sisters, Mary Thomas of Ramseur, Betty Price of Philadelphia, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

CARTHAGE - Dovie B. Deese, 91, of St. Joseph of the Pines Health Care, and formerly of Carthage, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Red Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. D.C. Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Anson County, the widow of Paul Deese and a homemaker.

Surviving are son, Thomas Deese of Lakeview; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Monday.

Lela R. Taylor
CARTHAGE - Lela Reynolds Taylor, 90, of Union Church Road, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at New Home Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmie Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Surry County and the widow of Elbert W. Taylor.

Surviving are daughters, Virginia Marshall of Sanford, Doris Keith and Carol Thomas, both of Cameron; sons, Elbert Taylor Jr. and Larry Taylor, both of Sanford, Louis Taylor of Greensboro, Jerry Taylor and Toby Taylor, both of Carthage; sister, Eula Bennett of Carthage; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren.

HIGH POINT - Marie Goodwin Hendricks, 80, of 1662 Kersey Valley Road, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Guilford Memorial Park, with Minister Ray Luther officiating.

She was a native of Forsyth County, the widow of Austin Hal Hendricks, a retired employee of Pomona Pipe Co. and a member of Springfield Friends Meeting.

Surviving is sister, Virginia Maness of High Point.

The family will be at Sechrest Family Funeral Care, Archdale, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

C. Walton Chriscoe
SEAGROVE - Charles Walton "Walt" Chriscoe, 87, of 1910 Chriscoe Road, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Union Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Grady Blakeley and the Rev. Ron Copple officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery, Robbins.

He was a native of Randolph County and a retired supervisor with Ithaca Industries, Robbins.

Surviving are wife, Carol Jeffries Chriscoe of the home; son, Jeffrey Chriscoe of Robbins; daughter, Anne C. Morgan of Seagrove; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Kitty H. Hoover
MT. GILEAD - Kitty Belle Hutchison Hoover, 77, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sharon Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary McNeill officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County, the widow of James Everette Hoover, a member of Mt. Gilead First United Methodist Church and retired from Russell Harvell of Mt. Gilead.

Surviving are sons, Kevin Hoover of Mt. Gilead, Michael Hoover of Stanley, Stephen Hoover of Blowing Rock; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the home.
