Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was a native of Stokes County, the widow of Raymond Westmoreland and Robert Brantley and a member of Hughes Grove Baptist Church in Thomasville.
Surviving are daughters, Ola Black of Kimesville, Ruby Crawley of Burlington, Patty Hinshaw of Climax, Nancy Newby of Archdale; sons, Simon "Pete" Westmoreland and Franklin Westmoreland, both of Lexington, Cecil Westmoreland of Climax; sister, Elsie Shelton of Liberty; 25 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Cecil Westmoreland, 2864 N.C. 22 North, Climax.

HIGHFALLS - Frances Upchurch Brown, 86, of St. Joseph in the Pines, formerly of Highfalls, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional, Pinehurst.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highfalls United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Richard McKinley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Leighton Brown and a retired worker from Burlington Industries Ramseur Plant.
Surviving are sister, Virginia U. Hill of Highfalls; brother, Joe Upchurch of Asheboro.
The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Bob and Virginia Hill, 1167 N.C. 22, Highfalls.
Walter D. Sweeney
OXFORD - Walter Daniel "Walt" Sweeney, 62, of 105 Meadow Park, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Duke Medical Center, Durham.
Memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Oxford, where he was a member, with the Rev. Fiona Bergstrom, the Rev. Harrison Simons and Chaplain Bill Bell officiating. Burial will be in the church memorial wall.
He was a native of Monmouth County, N.J., a U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of American Legion Post #90. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska of Omaha and of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a retired principal who had worked with the Wake, Warren and Vance county school systems. He was a former member of the vestry at his church, a former delegate to the Episcopal Convention and a volunteer with the ACIM and the VA Hospital.
Surviving are wife, Dawn Parnell Sweeney of the home; daughters, Katy Sweeney of the home, Lauryn Janet Griffin of Fuquay-Varina; sons, Walter John Sweeney of Asheboro, Michael Lauritz Sweeney of Raleigh; five grandchildren.
The family will be at the church following the memorial service on Saturday, other times at the home.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired worker from O'Dell Hardware and a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam.

SOPHIA - Janet Marie Smith Brown, 59, of 3887 Hillsdale Park Drive, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Asheboro, where she was a member, with Father Joseph Mack officiating. Entombment will be in Randolph Memorial Park.
She was a native of Racine, Wis., the former activity director for 23 years at Beverly Health Care Center, Thomasville, a Nationally Certified Activities Professional and a member of the North Carolina Activity Professional Association.
Surviving are husband, Sam T. Brown of the home; son, Daniel T. Brown of Sophia; daughter, Julie White of Lexington; mother, Rose M. Kelley of Sophia; sister, Judy LaPoint of Sophia; brothers, Jim Smith of Racine, Wis., John Borchardt of Sophia; five grandchildren.
A prayer service will be conducted 6:30 p.m. Friday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. The family will be at the funeral home following the prayer service until 8:30 p.m.

BEAR CREEK - Jon-Anthony Barrett Sumrell, 16, of 10715 N.C. 902, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ed Self and the Rev. Robert Capps officiating. Burial will be in Meroney United Methodist Church Cemetery.
He was a native of Chatham County, attended Pittsboro Church of the Nazarene and was a junior at Chatham Central High School where he was a member of the wrestling team, track team, soccer team and debate team.
Surviving are mother, Billie Sumrell of Bear Creek; brother, Leland Cheek of the home.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a retired driver from Pilot Freight Carriers.

She was a native of Lumberton, the widow of Aster Goodwin, a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was a native of Chatham County and the retired owner/operator of Butler Furniture.
Surviving are daughter, Ann B. Crumpler of Durham; brother, John Robert Ingle of Charlotte; sister, Eunice I. Balding of Burlington; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Carter County, Okla., the widower of Hildred Rhodes Hill, a retired produce vendor, a member of Church of Nazarene of Madill, Okla., and attended Light House Baptist Church in Lexington.
Surviving are sons, Jim Hill of Springfield, Mo., Freddy Hill and Todd Hill, both of Yukon, Okla.; daughter, Brenda H. Noah of Lexington; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a former security guard, a veteran of the Korean War, on the trustee and steward boards at his church, a member of American Legion Post 358 of Troy, where he was a member of the Veteran Council Board, and a graduate of Peabody High School, Troy.
