ASHEBORO - Hurley Lee Bowman, 80, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Smithwood United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Larry Emerson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was a native of Guilford County, the widower of Dorothy G. Bowman, a member of All Souls Anglican Church, Asheboro, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, and the retired owner and operator of Oscar Paul Corporation.
Surviving are daughter, Hurleen B. Maffett of Asheboro; sister, Betty B. Welborne of Whiteville; two grandsons.
The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-8 p.m. Monday.

ASHEBORO - Joseph Daniel Upchurch Sr., 73, of 1180 Ingram Drive, Asheboro, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. W. Christopher Thore and the Rev. Barry Queen officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.
He was a native of Harnett County, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, attended Duke University and was former General Manger of M&J Finance and President of G&W Motors in Shelby. He was General Manager of Hartsville Motor Co. in Hartsville, S.C., General Manager of Vestal Motor Co. in Asheboro and employed at Sears Teleservice Center in Greensboro.
Surviving are wife, Kitty B. Upchurch of the home; daughter, Kathy U. Shropshire of Archdale; sons, J. Dan Upchurch Jr. of Charlotte, Bob Upchurch of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Clara Owen of Angier; brothers, Harold M. Upchurch of Fuquay-Varina, J.B. Upchurch Jr. of Durham; four grandchildren.

She was a native of Randolph County, a former contract worker through Wee Socks, a retired cafeteria worker with the Randolph County Schools, a member of Marlboro Friends Meeting and a former Girl Scout leader.
Surviving are husband, Marshall W. Farlow of the home; sons, Herchel Farlow and Philip Farlow, both of Randleman, Tim Farlow of Sophia; daughters, Marilynn Payne of Norwood, Aleta Leonard of Lexington; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandson.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Gurney A. Lanier, a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.

TROY - Gerdyne Onan McCallum, 78, of 209 Watkins St., died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

He was a native of Robeson County, the widower of Dorothy Chisholm McCallum, retired from the U.S. Postal Service and a member of VFW Post #527. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after more than 23 years.
Surviving are daughters, Janice Carr and Virginia Rabb; sister, Lucille White of Asheville; three grandsons.

She was a speech writer for President John F. Kennedy, a real estate agent with Carpenter Realtors of Greenwood, Ind., and a member of Greenwood Wesleyan Church, Indianapolis, Ind.
Surviving are husband, Michio Kawahara of Indianapolis, Ind.; mother, Lillie Linebarrier Blair of Asheboro; brothers, Bill Linebarrier and George Linebarrier, both of Asheboro, Paul Linebarrier of Liberty.

He was a native of Rockingham County, a 1940 graduate of Madison High School, a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, a member of the Asheboro Masonic Lodge #699 and a Shriner of the Oasis Temple of Charlotte. He owned Coleman's Realty for 40 years.
Surviving are daughter, Sheila L. Coleman of Randleman; sisters, Sally Cardwell of Mayodan, Rose Hicks of Newport News, Va.; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren.
