A graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Summerville Baptist Church, Denton, with the Rev. Mike Motley and the Rev. Clint Scott officiating.

Surviving in addition to his parents are grandparents, Bill and Sylvia Scott of Denton, George and Nancy Bridges of Charlotte; great-grandparents, Henry and Clarice Bridges of Raleigh, Julian and Cornelia Berry of Charlotte.

Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, is in charge of the arrangements.

LEXINGTON - Henry Dolan Gordon, 73, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at Buena Vista Retirement Home, Lexington.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Monday at Sophia Baptist Church, Sophia.

He was a former plant supervisor with Industrial Hardwoods Co. of Perrysburg, Ohio.

Surviving are wife, Sarra Gordon of the home; son, Sonny Gordon; daughters, Patricia G. Hollingsworth, Linda G. Caviness; brother, Richard S. Gordon; stepsons, James Binai, Micheal Binai; stepdaughter, Anneli Yapo; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

Cremation Services of Winston-Salem is in charge of the arrangements.

R. Wayne Mills

Robert Wayne Mills, 85, of 122 E. Balfour Ave., Asheboro, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Avery Smith officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Jones County, retired owner of Mills Restaurant and a member of Shadow of the Cross Church.

Surviving are daughters, Shirley Hinson of Ramseur, Janice Snow of Asheboro; sons, Robert Lee Mills of Asheboro, Glenn Wayne Mills of Rocky Point; sister, Evelyn Wethington of Kinston; brother, Fred Mills of Pink Hill; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Billy R. Johnson

Billy Ray Johnson, 62, of 426 Green Valley Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Joe Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County and employed with Borum, Wade & Associates in Greensboro.

Surviving are wife, Shirley Edwards Johnson of the home; daughter, Amy Johnson Givens of Martinsville, Va.; sons, Daniel Ray Johnson of Altus, Okla., Kerry Dean Johnson, Mark Edwards Johnson, both of Asheboro; mother, Larue Johnson of Asheboro; brother, Alfred Farrell Johnson of Asheboro; six grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

SILER CITY - Ruth Irene Mansfield Underwood, 87, of 200 Center Drive, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Country Forest Manor.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Tom Hill and the Rev. Jeff Joyce officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of James Kenneth Underwood, a retired hosiery mill worker and a member of Glenco Baptist Church, Glenco.

Surviving are sons, Richard T. Mansfield of Oklahoma City, Okla., James Ray Underwood of Siler City; daughters, Helen M. Redding of Grays Chapel, Juanita G. Schleicher of Philadelphia, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday.

PITTSBORO - James Herbert "Jimmy" Payne Jr., 56, of 3004 Silk Hope-Gum Springs Road, died Saturday, June 6, 1998.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City, with the Rev. Brian Reynolds officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Olivia Schartiger, 20, of 731 W. Kivett St., Asheboro, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Pastor Jim Hakes and Pastor Richard Perkins officiating.

She was a native of Summersville, W. Va., a high school graduate of Randolph Community College, was employed in the meat department of Food Lion and as an assistant manager with Pizza Hut, both on Dixie Drive, and attended both the Seventh Day Adventist Church of High Point and First Assembly of God in Asheboro.

Surviving are mother and stepfather, Susan and Gary Meadows of Asheboro; sister, Christie N. Schartiger of the home; grandparents, James and Doris Bowyer of Mt. Nebo, W. Va., James and Lola Meadows of Summersville, W.Va.; great-grandmother, Mrs. A.D. Argenbright of Mt. Hope, W.Va.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Verna W. Goldston

RAMSEUR - Verna Williams Goldston, 87, of N.C. 22 South, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at her home.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jordan Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Mark Mashburn, OSL, officiating. There will be a private family burial.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Joseph Womble Goldston, was a former employee of North State Telephone Co. and was a member of the Nydia Temple No. 4, Daughters of the Nile in Portland, Ore.

Surviving is sister, Sarah W. Armfield of Jamestown.

The family will be at the church following the service.

Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, is in charge of the arrangements.

Edna D. Brewer

ROBBINS - Edna E. Davis Brewer, 74, of 1887 Spies Road, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Browns Chapel Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gary Waisner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a homemaker and a member of Browns Chapel Community Helping Hands Circle.

Surviving are husband, James E. "John" Brewer of the home; son, Jimmie Dale Brewer of Winston-Salem; daughter, Jane McBride of Robbins; sister, Thelma Williams of Eagle Springs; two granddaughters.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at J.H. Churchill Funeral Home, Murray, Ky., with the Rev. Jack Jones and Dr. Terry Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Barnett Cemetery.

He was a native of Calloway County, Ky., a member of Cross Road Baptist Church, attended Murray State University, Murray, Ky., was the owner and operator of Chips Inc. and was a U.S. Army reservist.

Surviving are wife, Brenda Williams Campbell of the home; son, Christopher "Chip" Campbell of Norwood; parents, Clifton and Cloia Howard Campbell of Murray, Ky.; sister, Susan Underwood of Murray, Ky.; brother, Larry Campbell of Crestwood, Ky.

The family will be at the funeral home 5-9 p.m. Wednesday.

SILER CITY - Edward Andrae Palmer, 19, of 2451 Mt. Vernon Spring Road, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Roma D. Swindell

ROBBINS - Roma Dunlap Swindell, 74, of 180 N. Rockingham St., died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Elise Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Dawes Graybeal, the Rev. Jerry Vuncannon and the Rev. James MacKenzie officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a deacon and former Sunday School teacher at her church and treasurer of the church building fund. She was the coordinator of Christian Ministries in the Robbins area and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, D. Arnold Swindell of the home; son, William S. "Bill" Swindell of Greensboro; daughters, Sandra S. Cargile of Greenville, Roma Lee S. Cheek of Asheboro; sister, Edna D. Johnson of Biscoe; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Roland I. Linnens Jr.

BENNETT - Roland Irist Linnens Jr., 81, of 75 Bonlee St., died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Bennett Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Tim Strider and the Rev. Robert Webb officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Alamance County, a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran, a retired weaving general overseer for Klopman Mills with over 50 years of service, was a deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member at his church and was a member of Asheboro Lodge No. 699 AF & AM.

Surviving are wife, Berta Mae Gardner Linnens of the home; brother, Ray Linnens of Burlington.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Surviving are daughters, Mary Watson, Glenda Bingham, both of Denton; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Lee and the Rev. Samuel Fairly officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are daughters, Irene Diggs of Durham, Gale Hargrove of Aberdeen, Darlene McLaughlin of Carthage; son, Thomas Person of Jamaica, N.Y.; sisters, Myrtle McLaughlin, Gerushia Wrencher, both of Carthage; brother, Carlee Thomas of Robbins; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Gale Hargrove, 114 Sherwood Drive, Aberdeen.

She was a native of Randolph County and the widow of Thadeus White Plummer.

Surviving are daughters, Emma Currie, Ann Underwood, both of Asheboro; sons, Lewis Plummer of Ramseur, Teddy Plummer of the home; sisters, Betty Lewallen of Asheboro, Peggy York of Ramseur; brothers, Nelson Davis, Henry Davis, Kent Davis, all of Franklinville, Paul Davis of Coleridge, Joe Davis, Danny Davis, both of Burlington; five grandchildren; one stepgrandchild.

She was a native of Stokes County and formerly employed with Blue Mist Restaurant and Robin Hood Drive-In.
