THOMASVILLE - Nelson R. Crotts, 70, of 111 Ridgeway Drive, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville, with the Rev. Dale Troutman officiating. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was a native of Trinity, a graduate of Trinity High School and of Ashmore Business College, a U.S. Army veteran and retired from First Union Bank and Rose Furniture Company. He was a member of Trinity Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was member of the Virginia Payne Sunday School Class, served on the

Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees, and was Sunday School

Secretary for many years. He was a Mason and Past-Master of Thomasville Lodge No. 214 A.F. and A.M.

Surviving are wife, Joan Baity Crotts of the home; son, Norman Dale Crotts of Boone; sister, Colleen Justice of Trinity; two stepgrandsons.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Ernest McKenzie
EAGLE SPRINGS - Ernest Howard McKenzie, 83, of 15444 N.C. 24/27, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Brown's Chapel Christian Church with the Rev. Gary Waisner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites.

He was a native of Moore County, the widower of Dorothy Williams McKenzie, a graduate of Elise Academy, and the owner and operator of Mac's Furniture Store. He was a past Master of Elise Lodge #555 A.F. and A.M., a certified Lectirer, a 32nd degree Mason, a P.D.D.G.L. and was chairman of the building committee for Elise Lodge that was completed in 1975.

There are no immediate survivors.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

ASHEBORO - Roy Rogers Yarberry, 60, 156 E. Academy St., Asheboro, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a native of Randolph County.

Surviving are daughter, Tammy Y. Warren of Staley; sister, Trudy Hall of Ocala, Fla.; two grandchildren.

Ridge Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

SEAGROVE - Andy Hancock, 50, of 6547 Old U.S. 220, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Ashe County Memorial Hospital in Jefferson.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at New Hope United Methodist Church of Seagrove, where he was a member, with the Rev. Brad Thie, the Rev. Marcus Portis and the Rev. David Nolan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, employed as a supervisor with Energizer Plant II in Asheboro, had served as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Administrative Council, taught Disciple and Sunday School classes, and sang in the choir at his church, and was a Lay Speaker for the High Point District of United Methodist Churches. He was active with Randolph County Special Olympics, served on the N.C. Special Olympics Sport Development Team for Aquatics and was a local team coach. He was a member of Biscoe Masonic Lodge #437, where he served as a Past Master. A 32nd degree Scottish Ritte.

Surviving are wife, Louise Auman Hancock of Seagrove; son, Aaron Jay Hancock of the home; mother, Betty Jo B. Hancock of Seagrove; sister, Jo Ellen H. Needham of Seagrove; brothers, Benji Hancock, Gregg Hancock, both of Asheboro.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-9 p.m. Sunday.

STAR - Wanda Freeman "Doober" Williams, 71, of 202 Smith St., died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at her home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Ether United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Freeman officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Bobby G. Williams of the home; son, Toby G. Williams of Biscoe; sisters, Ora Kate Freeman, Savannah "Chunk" Allen, both of Star.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

John C. Peterson
REELSBORO - John Caton Peterson, 70, of 5291 N.C. 55 East, died, Saturday, July 6, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reelsboro Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Robert Cayton officiating. Burial will be in Sandhill Cemetery.

He was a native of Pamlico County, a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility at Cherry Point MCAS, where he was an Aircraft Examiner and Aircraft Electrician. He served as treasurer of the National Association of Aircraft Examiners from 1980 to 1987, was a member the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and served as an elder and adult Sunday School teacher at his church.

Surviving are wife, Alice Dixon Peterson of the home; sons, Richard Harold Peterson of Bridgeton, Paul Gottfred Peterson of Asheboro; sisters, Lois Batts of New Bern, Edna Sawyer of Havelock; six grandchildren.

The family will be at Bryant Funeral Home, Alliance, 7-8 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

She was a native of Hinton, W.Va., and employed by Ramtex of Ramseur.

She was the widow of Elwood L. "Pete" Peatross.

Surviving are son, Edgar Bruce Peatross of Stafford, Va.; brothers, Edwin Wright of Archdale, Harold Wright of Clarksburg, W.Va., Wilton Wright of Asheboro; two grandchildren.

SOPHIA - Columbus Baker Sr., 78, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, Richlands, Va., with Columbus Baker Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Green Hills Memorial Cemetery, Claypool Hill, Va.

He was a native of McDowell County, W.Va., the widower of Hattie Lester Baker, a retired truck driver, a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ, White Mountain, Va., and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He attended Foster Street Wesleyan Church, Asheboro.

Surviving are daughters, Glenna Lowe of Asheboro, Brenda Wimmer of Pounding Mill, Va.; sons, Columbus Baker Jr. of Denton, Mickey Baker of Sophia, Dillis Baker of Asheboro; sisters, Linnie Justus of Wytheville, Va., Elizabeth Lester of Mooresville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Georgia P. Brewer
BENNETT - Georgia Phillips Brewer, 80, of 140 Randolph St., died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bennett Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County and the widow of Wade D. Brewer.

Surviving is sister, Kathleen P. Apple of Burlington.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Dr. Keith C. Hudson
AYDEN - Dr. Keith C. Hudson, 79, of 4145 Oakdale Drive, died Thursday, July 4, 2002.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ayden United Methodist Church, where he was a member.

He was a native of Thomasville, the widower of Betty Joyce Kinlaw, a graduate of Thomasville High School and a former principal at Asheboro High School. He was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran, a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College with a B.S. in Science Education and a master's in Educational Administration and where he was a recipient of the John B. Christenbury Memorial Award. He received his doctorate from Florida State University. He was a teacher at Charles L. Coon High School, Wilson, served as director of Academic Training, Graham Aviation, Marianna, Fla., and director of Academic Training, Serv-Air Aviation Corp., Kinston. He was a professor emeritus at East Carolina University School of Education, served as professor of Educational Administration and Supervision and taught graduate courses in educational administration.

Surviving are daughter, Jane H. Morris of Winterville; son, Don Hudson of Raleigh; two granddaughters.

Farmer Funeral Service, Ayden, is in charge of arrangements.

She was a native of Kannapolis and attended Greensboro College. She was a graduate of High Point College and of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received an advanced degree. She had taught school in California and in the Greensboro City Schools and the Asheboro City Schools.

Surviving are husband, Blaine S. Ward; son, David K. Ward of Silver Spring, Md.; daughter, Martha W. Brown of Selma; brothers, William J. Bullock III of Kannapolis, David O. Bullock of Raleigh; sister, Jane B. Lock of Virginia Beach, Va.; one grandson.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired farmer and an upholsterer. He worked at Globe Furniture and Thomasville Furniture industries. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of Ward Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving are wife, Gladys Moffitt Davis of the home; sons, Gerald Davis of High Point, Dwight Davis of Thomasville; sisters, Olivia "Lib" Cagle of Archdale, Alma Groce of Asheboro; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Chatham County and a retired worker for Boling Chair Co.
