TROY - Alan "Jay" Lincoln, 42, of 1040 Lovejoy Road, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at his home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Southside Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Williams officiating.

He was a native of Florence, S.C., a member of Lovejoy United Methodist Church, a volunteer with Troy Fire Department and an employee of Lemons Backhoe & Loader Service.

Surviving are wife, Gwinne Parsons Lincoln of the home; sons, Matthew Trey Lincoln and Patrick Tyler Lincoln, both of the home; mother, Elsie Lincoln of Troy; half brother, A.J. Lincoln of Winston-Salem.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Gloria W. Maness
ASHEBORO - Gloria Ann Witt Maness, 65, of 1249 Eton Ave., Asheboro, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

A private service will be held at a later date.

She was a native of Randolph County, the bookkeeper for Auto Supply Co. Inc., and was a member of the Humane Society of Randolph County.

Surviving are husband, Ray Maness of the home; daughters, Jill M. Muller of Orinda, Calif., Kim M. Matthews of Greenville; sister, Eleanor Turner of Newport; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Thomas H. Tucker
RAMSEUR - Thomas H. Tucker, 84, of 1365 Mill Creek Road, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Tommy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and retired from Burlington Industries.

Surviving are wife, Isabelle Bennett Tucker of the home; sons, Roy Tucker of Altavista, Va., Walter Thomas of Asheboro; daughter, Mary Ruth Phillips of Glendon; sister, Vernon Flowers of Asheboro; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

BENNETT - Helen Lucille Welch, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at SunBridge Care, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Bennett Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Belmont in Alamance County, the widow of Frank Welch and a former inspector at Kellwood Hosiery.

Surviving are daughters, Nancy Dickens of Panama City, Fla., Ann Smith of Snow Camp; sons, William "Bill" Welch of Asheboro, Donald Welch of Cordova; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

Lenora P. Green
MT. GILEAD - Lenora Pittman Green, 87, of New York, formerly of Mt. Gilead, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, in Brookdale Hospital, Bronx, N.Y.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Oakridge Congregational Church, Mt. Gilead, where she was a member, with the Rev. Eleanore Scotten officiating. Burial will be in the Ingram Chapel A.M.E. Zion, Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Roberson County and the widow of Pavo Green.

Surviving is sister, Jessie McBee of Greenville, S.C.

Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, is in charge of arrangements.

W.K. "Bud" Dickens
REIDSVILLE - Waldo Kohler Dickens, 86, of Carpenter Drive, Reidsville, formerly of Candor, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at the Brian Center, Eden.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, Candor, with the Rev. Robert Hitterpole officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and an automobile mechanic.

Surviving are daughter, Susan Britt of Reidsville; sisters, Annie Dickens, Ruth Rushing, both of Candor, Frances Poole of Biscoe; three grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 12:15-1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Joseph S. Harris
ASHEBORO - Joshua Samuel Harris, infant son of Jerry Bim and Angie Riffe Harris, of 1395 Jerico Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Brenner's Childrens Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Pastor James Draughn officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Fellowship Church Cemetery, Denton.

Surviving in addition to the parents are brother, Jesse Bim Harris of the home; grandparents, Rev. David and Wilma Riffe of Stuart, Va., Paul and Brenda Thomas of Biscoe, Jerry and Sadie Harris of Ramseur; great-grandparents, Doyle and Daisy Riffe of Avondale, W.Va., Bim and Frances Hunt of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 5-8 p.m. Sunday.

TROY - Christy Dawn Morton Castle, 28, of 136 Lonnie Lane, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at North Carolina Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead, with the Rev. William Turnmire and the Rev. Johnny Cox officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Troy Pentecostal Holiness Church, a graduate of West Montgomery High School and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Daniel Mark Castle of the home; parents, Jerry and Deborah Gibson Morton of Troy; brothers, Jerry Ray Morton of Troy, Jeffery Dale Morton of Oakboro; grandmother, Ruth Morton of Troy.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at 165 Sunset Drive, Troy.

Bertha J. Johnson
ASHEBORO - Bertha Jameson Johnson, 101, of Crossroads Retirement Center, Asheboro, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

She was a native of Baltimore, Md., and a homemaker.

Surviving are two grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Monday.

ROBBINS - Joann D. Stewart, 77, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Keith Miller officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

She was a native of Wyoming County, W.Va., the widow of Julian Stewart, a member of the United Methodist Women at her church, and a retired supervisor at Columbia Federal Savings and Loan in Washington, D.C.

Surviving are sister, Betty Robinette of Pikeville, Ky.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Beverly D. Maness
ASHEBORO - Beverly Dunn Maness, 49, of 1822 Stallion Trail, Asheboro, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at the home of her caregiver, Elaine Moore.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Harold Baker officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Baptist Church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of Asheboro High School and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Deane Maness of Asheboro; son, Jeremy Maness of Randleman; mother, Ola Mae Hulin of Asheboro; father, Cletus Dunn of Star; sisters, Patricia Jordan and Pamela Moore, both of Asheboro; brothers, Tim Dunn of Asheboro, Randy Dunn of Garner; one granddaughter.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

RANDLEMAN - Ronald Bruce Freeman, 63, of 52 Poulin Place, Clyde, died Saturday Aug. 17, 2002, at his home.

He was a native of Richmond County, a U.S. Air Force veteran, a member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in Canton and retired from the State of North Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation.

Surviving are wife, Mary Anne Glenn Freeman of Canton; daughter, Leslie F. Massie of Liberty; sisters, Ann F. Yates of Randleman, Joyce Hargett of Norfolk, Va.; brother, William H. Freeman of Burlington; two grandchildren.

John T. Stroud
DENTON - John T. Stroud, 58, of Stewart Road, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at his home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with the Rev. Arnold Comer officiating.

He was a native of Horry County, S.C., a former machine operator with Burlington Industries and Thomasville Furniture Industries and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Dianne Burr Stroud of the home; son, Samuel Lee Stroud of Thomasville; daughter, Kriss Ann Jones of San Antonio, Texas; mother, Esther Stroud of Lexington; brother, Jackie Stroud of Lexington; sister, Nellie Samples of Lexington; two grandchildren.

There will be no visitation.

MT. GILEAD - Sophie Chappell Burroughs, 64, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sharon Cemetery.

She was a native of Richmond County, a homemaker, and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Howard Nicholson Burroughs of the home; mother, Gertie Harrison Chappell of Mt. Gilead; brothers, Clyde Chappell and Jesse Lee Chappell, both of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Dorothy Lamonds of Biscoe, Lola Sneed of Mt. Gilead.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Peggy F. Frix
MT. GILEAD - Peggy Freeman Frix, 69, of Robedo Road, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wadeville Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Lonnie Gibson, the Rev. Gerald Lanier and the Rev. Keith Bumgarner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a homemaker, a secretary for Frix Brothers Lumber Co. and a former Sunday school teacher, pianist and member of the WMU at her church.

Surviving are husband, Alvin L. Frix of the home; daughters, Diane Hoover of Troy, Connie Mitchell of Mt. Gilead; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

SILER CITY - Jimmy Dean Bowman, 44, of 2435 Old U.S. 421 North, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Independence, Va., with the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are son, Jeremy D. Bowman of Liberty; mother, Juanita Hodge Bowman of Siler City; brother, Johnny A. Bowman of Siler City; sister, Janie B. Kivett of Staley; one grandson.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of the mother, 2435 Old U.S. 421 North, Siler City.

Irene M. Ennis
THOMASVILLE - Irene McPeters Ennis, 73, of Pine Street, formerly of Randolph County, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, with the Rev. Cordell McCollum and the Rev. Joe Bare officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park.

She was a native of Yancey County, the widow of Fred Loyde Ennis, of the Baptist faith and employed by Drexel Heritage Incorporated.

Surviving are daughter, Debbie E. Jarvis of Thomasville; sisters, Alene Kennedy of Trinity, Doris Frisby of Asheboro; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Alene Kennedy, 5769 Sabine St., Trinity.

George W. Lewallen
ASHEBORO - George Washington "Bud" Lewallen, 92, of 709 Uwharrie St., Asheboro, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at West Bend United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jim Purdy and the Rev. David Noyes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Katherine Paisley Lewallen, a member of Woodmen of the World, and a former trustee at his church where he held several offices.

Surviving are son, Horace Lewallen of Asheboro; daughter, Linda Redding of Asheboro; half sisters, Lucy Shirley, Yvonne Harris, both of Asheboro; half brother, Aaron Lewallen of Asheboro; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

She was a native of Stokes County, the widower of Noah Kennedy and Chester Adams, a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class at her church and retired from Adams Millis Hosiery Mill.

Surviving are daughter, Cora George of Thomasville; stepdaughter, Ruby Melton of Greensboro; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of her daughter, 120 Byerly Drive, Thomasville.
