ASHEBORO - John Edward "Jack" Glass, 80, of 1513 Briarcliff Drive, Asheboro, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Browers Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jeff Sypole and the Rev. Alvin Latham officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a retired World War II and Korean Conflict U.S. Army veteran, and retired from the Asheboro Police Department. He was a member of American Legion Post 45, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Purple Heart Association.

Surviving are wife, Caroleen Miller Glass; daughter , Patt Glass of Raleigh; son, John Edward Glass Jr. of Asheboro; foster daughter, Dolly Ann Laughlin of Kernersville; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

ASHEBORO - James Gregg Hodgin, 85, of Asheboro, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Stedman Mfg., and a member of Asheboro United Church of Christ.

Surviving are wife, Pauline Luther Hodgin of Asheboro; daughter, Paula Purvis Garner of Asheboro; sons, Thomas W. Hodgin of Graham, James L. Hodgin of Chapel Hill; brother, Waldo Hodgin of Jamestown; five grandchildren; three great-granddaughters.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Paula Garner, 624 Spencer Ave., Asheboro.

ASHEBORO - Dollye Foxx Vincent, of 230 E. Presnell Street, Asheboro, died at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Liberty. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are husband, James Vincent Jr. of Rock Creek; daughter, Leesa V. Hernandez of Asheboro; sons, Anthony Vincent and James Foxx, both of Asheboro, Thomas Vincent of Asheville; mother, Gracie Smith of Maryland; brother, J.D. Foxx of Liberty; sisters, Alice Almonds, Phyllis Jenkins and Janice Foxx, all of Maryland; four grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1-2 p.m. Saturday.

RANDLEMAN - Evon Caudle Allred, 72, OF 517 Worthville Road, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Wesley Long Community Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethany United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. R. Curran Welch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and the widow of Harold F. Allred. She attended Grays Chapel School, worked as an EMT with the High Point Rescue Squad and retired as a nursing aide from Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are daughters, Debbie Kennington of Asheboro, Lori Talbert of Cedar Falls; sons, Gene Allred of Climax, Kevin Allred of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Lois Caudle Aldridge of Franklinville; brothers, Clarence Caudle and Glyn Caudle, both of Franklinville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will be at her home 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman.

David L. Plummer
LIBERTY - David L. Plummer, 62, of 4803 Wall Farm Drive, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian, with the Rev. Jerry Mills officiating.

Surviving are wife, Shirley Clark Plummer of the home; sons, Eddie Dean Plummer and Ricky L. Plummer, both of Liberty; sisters, Linda Culberson and Joyce Stephens, both of Liberty; brother, J.T. Plummer of Greensboro; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Christine G. Sheffield
STAR - Christine Greene Sheffield, 76, of 152 Green Top Road, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Temple, with the Rev. Lonnie Poole and the Rev. Ralph Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Leach Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Pat Smith and Betty Mashburn, both of Star, Pam Saunders of Biscoe, Wendy Nooe of Robbins; sons, Richard Sheffield and Roger D. Sheffield, both of Star; sisters, Kathleen Greene and Diane Greene, both of Star; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Beatrice B. Hardister
TROY - Beatrice "Bea" Bruton Hardister, 89, of Ophir Road, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Autumn Care Nursing Home, Biscoe.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Eleazer United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Derald Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, the widow of Haywood Morton and Herbert Hardister, and an emergency room technician with Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Surviving are sisters, Bertha Matthews of Doylestown, Pa., Nancy Burgess and Annie Lou Hoover, both of Candor, Vancy Scott of Huntersville; brother, Robert Bruton of Candor.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Troy, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Robert Bruton, Pekin Road, Candor.

CANDOR - Betty Mauldin Parnell, 56, of Sandy Ridge Assisted Living, formerly of Troy, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Sandy Ridge.

She was a native of Surry County, a homemaker and attended Long Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Kim Batten of Troy; sons, Ray Douglas Freeman Jr. of Troy, Michael Lee Freeman of Rowland, Randy Freeman of Alabama; sisters, Carolyn Lisenby of Troy, Miriam Mauldin of Candor; eight grandchildren.

James J. Hume
CARTHAGE - James J. Hume, 81, of 1044 McNeill St., died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at his home.

Memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a native of New Albany, Ind., formerly of Pineville, Ky., worked in Glendon Pyrophyllite Mill and later became the owner/operator. He graduated from Tennessee Military Institute and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Elizabeth Chappell Hume; brother, David Hume of Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Ruby M. Barnette
NORMAN - Ruby Morgan Barnette, 73, of Barnette Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at her home.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Norman Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Richardson officiating.

She was a native of Newport News, Va., and retired from the Navy Yards, where she was a medical clerk.

Surviving are husband, Herman Barnette of the home; daughter, Susan Smith of Candor; son, Mike Barnette of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren.

Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, is in charge of arrangements.

ROXBORO - Shelton Stewart Holt, 29, of 1476 Mill Hill Road, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jeff Raymond officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, employed with Eaton Corporation and an Eagle Scout.

Surviving are wife, Rose Marie Holt; parents, Allen F. and Sara Ann Stewart Holt of Asheboro; son, David Allen Holt of the home; daughter, Hannah Robynn Holt of the home; grandfather, Finley Stewart of Asheboro; brother, Ross A. Holt of Asheboro.

The family will be at Brooks & White Funeral Home, Roxboro, 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tucky Howle, 1286 Robertson Road, Roxboro.

SEAGROVE - Colon Jackson Presnell, 80, of 6038 Maple Springs Road, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Monday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Brian Holland officiating. Burial will be in Flag Springs U.M.C. Cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a self-employed logger and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are daughters, Pat VonCannon and Shellie P. Fain, both of Seagrove, Kecia Dorsett of Star; sisters, Dorothy P. Connor, Jane P. Cox, Nancy P. Overman, all of Seagrove; brothers, Glen Presnell, Bob Presnell, Joe Presnell, all of Seagrove; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Shellie Fain, 6072 Maple Springs Road, Seagrove.

MT. GILEAD - Lessie Leake "Noon" Rush, 95, of 906 Thomasville Church Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Leah Levin Auditorium, Mt. Gilead Elementary School, with the Rev. Allen Warren officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Richmond County and a member of St. Stephen's A.M.E. Church.

Surviving are daughters, Rhodema Lilly and Janie Chambers, both of Mt. Gilead; 22 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; 63 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the auditorium 2:30-3 p.m. prior to the service on Sunday.

Paul Burns
ROBBINS - Paul Burns, 82, of 5303 N.C. 705, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Pinelake Health & Rehab.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Robbins First Wesleyan Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Wilson Harris officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a retired employee of Mid South Vending.

Surviving are wife, Nellie Kate Poe Burns of the home; daughter, Cindy Sullivan of Mooresville; son, Randall Burns of Carthage; sisters, Elizabeth Lopenski and Mishie Howard, both of Asheboro; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. - Neta Quick Sweatt, 91, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002.

She was a native of Marlboro County, the widow of Milton Lawrence Sweatt, a homemaker and a member of Gibson Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are sons, Howard M. Sweatt of Dothan, Ala., Clarence Sweatt of Asheboro, Lawrence D. Sweatt of Bennettsville, S.C.; daughters, Ruth Grimsley of Sumter, S.C., Francis Pate of Bennettsville, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Jim Smith
ASHEBORO - Jimmy Odell Smith, 61, of 672 Cedar Creek Drive, Asheboro, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Mike Holder and the Rev. Martha Welch officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery with military honors.

He was a native of Randolph County, a Vietnam veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star, and co-owner/operator of Asheboro Business Machine.

Surviving are wife, Cookie Fritz Smith of Asheboro; sons, James Odell Smith of Asheboro, Major Stephen Luther Smith of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; daughter, Catherine S. Napier of Asheboro; mother, Frances Pugh Smith of Asheboro; sister, Rebecca S. Cooper of Asheboro; brothers, Billy Lee Smith of Ramseur, Victor Joe Smith of Wilmington; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Monday.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Eric Gene Glasgow of Bear Creek, Anthony Ray Glasgow of Asheboro; sisters, Rosa P. Harden of New London, Evelyn Gail Rollins of Thomasville, Shirley M. King of Randleman, Janice G. Hinson of Asheboro; brother, David R. Glasgow of Burgaw; six grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home Tuesday after the service, other times at the home of Janice Hinson, 2324 Stepping Stone Lane, Asheboro.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Evelyn Paige Beeson Allred, retired from Hatteras Yacht Company and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are daughters, Diane Auman of Trinity, Cheryl Pratt of Sophia; sons, Donald Allred Jr. of Sophia, Steven Allred of Trinity, Barry Allred of Archdale; brother, Charles Allred of Virginia Beach, Va.; sisters, Mary Perdue of Randleman, Martha Soloman and Anna Lee McDonald, both of Greensboro, Helena Coltrane of Archdale, Peggy Chamblee of Selma; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
