LIBERTY - James W. "Jim" Smith, of Liberty and Emerald Isle, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church.

He was a graduate of Liberty High School, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Elon University, and was a corporate officer at AIC Inc., Greensboro.

Surviving are wife, Cynthia Smith of the home; sister, Gwen Hewitt of Ardmore, Pa.

The family will be at the church following the service.

Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, is in charge of arrangements.

BISCOE - Della Brewer Myrick, 94, of Autumn Care of Biscoe, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pine Grove Baptist Church, Eagle Springs, where she was a member, with the Rev. Bill Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Carl L. Myrick and a homemaker.

Surviving are son, Jim D. Myrick of Asheboro; sisters, Grace Emerson and Francis Michael, both of High Point, Onnie B. Britt of Biscoe; brother, Curtis I. Brewer of Robbins; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Miriam H. King
TROY - Miriam Hurley King, 78, of 624 Biscoe Road, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Southside Cemetery, with Dr. James B. Gibson officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a graduate of Flora McDonald College, a music teacher, owner/operator of King Insurance Agency and a member of First Baptist Church of Troy.

Surviving are husband, John Carson King Jr. of the home; sister, Peggy H. Lovelace of Goldsboro.

The family will be at the home.

LIBERTY - Dorothy Flynt Smith, 79, of 3557 Silk Hope-Liberty Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Rick Bell officiating. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian.

She was a native of Alamance County and a retired legal secretary.

Surviving are husband, George F. Smith of the home; daughters, Gwynne S. Sayres of Gainesville, Va., Holly S. Taylor of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, George F. Smith Jr. of Asheville; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Annie D. Morton
TROY - Annie Doris Morton, 80, of 922 Lindsey Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Southside Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are brother, Charles Morton of Wadesboro; sister, Evelyn Sanders of Burlington.

There will be no visitation.

BISCOE - Sherri Lynn Beitzel Howell, 28, of 2863 Tarry Church Road, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Holly Mount Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead, with the Rev. Henry Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, attended Holly Mount Baptist Church, and was an employee of Pinewild Country Club,

Surviving are parents, Danny and Sarah Shepard Howell of Candor; daughters, Jessica Danielle Beitzel and Amy Louise Beitzel, both of the home; sister, Angelia Rena Beitzel Howell of Mt. Gilead; grandmother, Lucille Leach of Biscoe.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Danny and Sarah Howell, Troy-Pekin Road, Candor.

She was a native of Chatham County and attended Antioch Baptist Church.

STALEY - David Miles York, 82, of 600 Zion Church Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at his home.

He was a native of Chatham County, a horseman, cattle farmer and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are wife, Marjorie A. York of the home; son, David Ray York of the home; three grandsons; one great-grandson.

She was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a retired worker from Jockey International.

DENTON - Alta Lanier Miller, 90, of Cook Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Mountain Vista Health Park.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Gerald Miller and the Rev. Dan McClure officiating. Burial will be in Tom's Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Carson M. Miller, a homemaker and attended Lineberry United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Young at Heart Club, a 1929 graduate of Denton High School and a graduate of Edwards Business School.

Surviving are sons, Wayne Miller, James "Jimmy" Miller and Dwight L. Miller, all of Denton, Carson "Mack" Miller of Lexington; daughters, Ronda M. Carroll and Lisa M. Martin, both of Denton; brother, Max Lanier of Dunnellon, Fla.; sister, Lucille Pierce of Denton; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Lisa Martin, Cook Road, Denton.

He was a native of Montgomery County and a member of Browers Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was a native of Siler City, a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church in North Carolina and a homemaker.

George F. Owen Jr.
DENTON - George F. Owen Jr., 80, of Tom Briggs Road, Lexington, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Holloways Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bynum Orr and the Rev. R.N. Hardin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 3074.

He was a native of Davidson County, the widower of Dora Anna Everhart Owen, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a fuel truck operator with the Davidson County Schools Transporation Department.

Surviving are sons, Dean Owen of Thomasville, Kenny Owen of Denton; daughter, Sharon Mickel of Welcome; brothers, Luther Owen of Denton, O'Neil Owen of Lexington; sisters, Marie Yarbrough, Jewel Hunt and Nancy Darr, all of Lexington; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Kenny Owen, 1853 Lick Creek Church Road, Denton.

He was a native of Moore County and a retired worker from Hayworth-Walker Buick, formerly Hayworth Motor Company.

Surviving are wife, Artie Hussy Brown of the home; sister, Mabel Ruth Thomas of Birmingham, Ala.; brother, Swanson Brown of Newport News, Va.

DENTON - David P. Smith Sr., 60, of Loflin Hill Road, Trinity, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002.

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Monday at Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Billy Joe Yates and the Rev. Charles Stephenson officiating.

He was a native of Davidson County and a self-employed brick mason.

Surviving are son, David Smith Jr. of Star; daughters, Lynn Callicutt of Asheboro, Elaine Smith of Sarasota, Fla.; brothers, Van Smith and Donald Smith, both of Thomasville; sisters, Geraldine Lambeth of Lexington, Martha Stephenson and Sarah Fansler, both of Thomasville; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Geraldine Lambeth, 2425 Wright Road, Lexington.
