Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Troy Chapel A.M.E Zion Church, Troy. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.
She was a native of Montgomery County and a member of Throne of Grace Baptist Church of Charlotte. She attended the Montgomery County public schools.
Surviving are husband, Sylvester Covington of Troy; daughters, Sandra Kay Alston of Candor, Claudette T. Steele, Calitha Covington, both of Troy; sons, Cornelius Covington and Nakia Covington, both of Troy; sister, Ella M. Bruton of Mt. Gilead; brothers, Herbert Butler Jr. of Troy, Monroe Leake of Albemarle; stepmother, Sallie Butler of Mt. Gilead; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

DENTON - Paul Edgar Apple, 80, of Brantley Gordon Road, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Jeff Lamb, the Rev. Vincent Adams, the Rev. John Leviner, the Rev. Rodney Vickers and Elder Gene Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Tom's Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
He was a native of Moore County, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a retired employee of Burlington Industries, Denton Plant. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are wife, Colleen Snider Apple of the home; son, Neil Apple of Asheboro; daughters, Diane Cook and Paula Apple, both of Denton; four grandchildren.

WINSTON-SALEM - Conrad Milton Hardin, 71, of 131 Flintfield Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.
He was a native of Ramseur, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired supervisor with the Forsyth County Social Services Department, a member of the USS Chara Crew Association and an author of several articles on Randolph County history.
Surviving are daughter, Laura Hardin of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Jeffrey Hardin of Winston-Salem; sisters, Katherine Poole, Betty Jo Cagle, Janet Yates, Ann Hardin, all of Asheboro, Gwen Foster of Ruffin; brothers, Larry Hardin of Pensacola, Fla., Randy Hardin of Asheboro; four grandchildren.

THOMASVILLE - Sadie Williams Starrett, 96, of Liberty Woods Nursing Home, formerly of Johnsontown Road, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at the nursing home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnsontown United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Jenna Grogan and the Rev. Bobby Beck officiating. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Robert Dewey Starrett, a member of the Mary Wolfe Sunday School Class and the Senior Citizens at her church, and a homemaker.
Surviving are daughter, Lucille Hill of Thomasville; sons, Donald Starrett and Colon Starrett, both of Thomasville; brother, Grady Williams of Farmer; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Chesterfield, S.C., retired from Brown's Auto Supply and a member of First United Methodist Church.

ASHEBORO - J.E. Whisnant, 84, of 1022 Macon St., Asheboro, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. John Rogers, the Rev. Archie Chapman, the Rev. Mitchell Whisnant and the Rev. Nathan Whisnant officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
He was a native of Cleveland County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, former National Guard member and a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from FCX after 33 years, and was a member of the Teachey Sunday School Class and worked in the Training Union at his church. He was a member of the N.C. Cattle and Poultry Association, where he had served on a committee and had worked at Uwharrie Golf Course and the Biscuit Co.
Surviving are wife, Ruby C. Whisnant of the home; daughters, Janet W. Harllee of Asheboro, Carol W. Lamm of Kernersville; sister, Beatrice Blanton of Shelby; two grandchildren.

She was a native of Caswell County, a member of First United Methodist Church, Liberty, and had worked at the Reitzel Senior Center.

She was a former member of the American Business Women's Association and was named the organization's Woman of the Year 1985. She retired from Adams Millis/Sara Lee after 42 years of service, kept the nursery at her church for many years and volunteered at Oak Hollow Thrift Store.
Surviving are husband, Charles E. Davis of the home; daughter, Susan Arey of High Point; sisters, Magalene Cook, Martha Shives both of Archdale, Lera Owens of Trinity, Irene Parks of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; brothers, Riley McDowell, Julius McDowell, the Rev. Garland McDowell, all of Trinity, Terry McDowell of High Point; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.
