ASHEBORO - William E. "Bill" Ridge, 83, of 840 Oakmont Drive, Asheboro, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at his home.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. W. Michael Holder, the Rev. Boyd Stokes and the Rev. Russell Ward officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.
A native of Hartsville, S.C., he retired after 26 years in the U.S Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer and retired after 31 years as a manager of the local Sherwin Williams. He was a seventh-grade Sunday School teacher at his church and a member of the board of directors of the Salvation Army.
Surviving are wife, Sara Lee Frazier Ridge of the home; daughters, Judy Ridge of Winston-Salem, Debbie Shiflet of Asheboro; son, William David Ridge of Greensboro; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

CANDOR - Joanne Dobies Hitchcock, 65, of Windblow Road, Jackson Springs, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, with Janice Rhoden officiating.
She was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, a homemaker and of the Catholic faith.
Surviving are husband, Larry F. Hitchcock; daughters, Mary Hitchcock of Candor, Pamela Walsh of Orlando, Fla., Deborah Saville of Phoenix, Ariz., Lori Rucker of Hermitage, Tenn., Susan McCandless of Eagle Springs; son, Howard Hitchcock of Candor; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

MT. GILEAD - John Emerson Byrd, 86, of 722 Davis Haywood Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Britthaven of Piedmont, Albemarle.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Turnmire and the Rev. James Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was a native of Montgomery County, the widower of Louise Hamilton Byrd and a retired worker from Russell Harvell.
Surviving are daughters, Sheila Goodson of Oconomowoc, Wis., Janie Newton and Elaine Castle, both of Mt. Gilead; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

MT. GILEAD - Frances Reynolds Harris, 87, formerly of Mt. Gilead, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Citizen Medical Center, Colby, Kan.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sharon Cemetery, Mt. Gilead, with the Rev. Frank Ingram officiating.
She was a native of Montgomery County, the widow of Max Ray Harris, a member of First United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Surviving are daughter, Doris Mayer of Brewster, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

JAMAICA, N.Y. - Mary Magdalene Spencer Robinson, 72, formerly of Randleman, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002.

She was a native of Guilford County, the widow of Albert D. Hicks and a retired worker from Greensboro Manufacturing.

MT. GILEAD - James Arthur "Auf" Gould, 82, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Autumn Care Nursing Facility, Biscoe.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Chestnut A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. James Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was a native of Richmond County and a World War II veteran.
Surviving are daughter, Sally Anne Little of Mt. Gilead; brothers, Walter Gould, Elie Gould and Phillip Gould, all of Mt. Gilead, Rueben Gould of New York; sister, Annie Williams of New York; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Randolph County, had worked for McRae Roofing, was of the Baptist faith and a past district governor of the Lions Club.

ASHEBORO - John Lewis Van Opstal, 76, of 441 Newbern Ave., Asheboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Jean Nall officiating. Graveside service will 3 p.m. in Dobson Cemetery, Dobson, with military honors.
He was a native of Lake Worth, Fla., a U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and retired from the Air Force. He worked at Roses and Barker Furniture in Asheboro, was of the Episcopalian faith and attended the Open Arms Church of God and Grace United Methodist Church.
Surviving are wife, Ernestine C. Van Opstal of the home; daughters, Diana Perry of Jacksonville, Fla., Sandra Dieckman of Denver, Fay Bowden of Palactka, Fla.; son: David Van Opstal of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepdaughters, Lucy Lee Felts of Cana, Va., Nancy Merille, Becky Conrad, both of Asheboro; stepson, Jerry Barker of Asheboro; sisters, Jeanette Taylor of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Gladys Gougeon of Lantana, Fla.; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons.

DENTON - Earl L. "Ging-Ging" Knight Sr., 80, of Denton Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at his home.

He was a native of Darlington, S.C. and retired from South Carolina Electric and Gas. He was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Columbia, S.C., attended First Baptist Church in Denton and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

ELLERBE - Ashley Grey Yarbrough Sr., 74, of 2431 N. U.S. 220, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at his home.
Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Norman United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Donnie Davis officiating. Burial will be in Norman Cemetery.
He was a native of Anson County, on the board of trustees, a secretary, treasurer, chairman of the Official Board and a Sunday School teacher at his church. He was a member of the Ellerbe Fire Department, a volunteer with the Ellerbe Rescue Squad and a member of the Ellerbe Lions Club where he served in every office on the local level. He was the Lion of the Year for 1971-72 and 1982-83, District 31-F Zone Chairman and retired from Flav-O-Rich Dairy after 37 years.
Surviving are wife, Betty Morgan Yarbrough of the home; sons, Howard Yarbrough of the home, Donnie Yarbrough of Rockingham, Grey Yarbrough, Ronnie Yarbrough, both of Ellerbe; daughter, Kim Arnette of Candor; brother, Alex Yarbrough of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Sarah Robinson of Mt. Gilead, Mildred Leatherman of Morganton; nine grandchildren.
