ASHEBORO - Allen Jay "A.J." Williams, 79, of 5927 Mt. Lebanon Road, Asheboro, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church where he was a member of the Senior Adults Sunday School class, with the Rev. Joe Edwards and the Rev. D.C. Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Acme-McCrary and a member of High Pine Wesleyan Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are wife, Grace Strider Williams of the home; daughter, Lynda Hurley of Asheboro; sons, W. Larry Williams, Randy Williams and Bruce Williams, all of Asheboro; sisters, Leta Rice and Thelma Miller, both of Asheboro and Martha Crotts of Greensboro; four grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - James Walter "Jim" Greeson, 77, of 730 Woodcrest Drive, Asheboro, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Asheboro.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First E & R United Church of Christ, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dale Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Brick United Church of Christ Cemetery, Whitsett.
He was a native of Alamance County and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War Ii. He was a retired building inspector with the state, a former deputy with Randolph County Sheriff's Department and a member of Asheboro Golden K Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the Men's Bible Class at his church.
Surviving are wife, Lottie Mae Shepherd Greeson; sons, Thomas Vernon Greeson of Wilmington and Roger David Greeson of Denver, Colo.; brothers, George A. Greeson of Burlington and Zeb V. Greeson of Cullman, Ala.; sister, Margaret Buck of Nashville, Tenn.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

RANDLEMAN - Nolan Maurice Hill Sr., 84, of 206 E. Academy St., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002 at his home.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Reaves officiating.
He was a native of Randolph County and retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company.
Surviving are sons, Eric Hill of Randleman, and Maurice Hill Jr. of Asheboro; brothers, Samuel Hill of Asheboro and Cecil Hill of Randleman; five grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Shirley Louise Moore Deese, 53, of 1612 West Third Street, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at her home.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Brookdale Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Randy Queen and the Rev. Walter Jones officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.
She was a native of Chatham County and was owner/operator of Carolina Gallery. She was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class at her church.
Surviving are husband, Ronnie D. Deese of Siler city; daughters, Monica D. Watts of Ramseur, Sonya D. Hall of Loudon, Va. and Stacey D. Deese of Asheboro; mother, Emma Burke Moore of Siler City, brothers, Lane Moore of Homestead, Fla., Sammy Moore and Barry Moore both of Siler City; sisters, Linda M. Foster of Siler City, Sandra M. Linton of Goldsboro and Tammy M. Booth of Randleman; three grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - W.O. (Bill) Staley, 79, formerly of 7096 Bobby Jean Road, Julian, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation in Asheboro.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian with the Rev. Ken Day officiating.
He was a native of Guilford County and a retired farmer.
Surviving are sisters, Helen Toomes and Ruth Toomes, both of Randleman; brother, Eli Staley of Julian; half-sister, Mary Bowman of Liberty.
There will be no public visitation.

She was a native of Chatham County.

He was a native of Moore County and was employed with Ramtex Mfg. of Ramseur.

CANDOR - Josephine Harris Reid, 86, South Main Street, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Candor United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Surviving are husband, Virgil "Speedy" Reid of the home; sons, Virgil Reid Jr. of Birmingham, Ala., and Jim Reid of Greensboro; sisters, Ruby McKenzie, Becky Harris Williams and Ann Harris Batten, all of Candor; brothers, Gene Harris of Candor and Bill Harris of High Point; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

He was a native of Moore County, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran and was retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation. He was a member of the A.F. & A.M. Lodge #181.
Surviving are wife, Helen Styles Caviness; son, Wayne Caviness of Carthage; sister, Susanne Wessale of Bethesda, Md.; three grandchildren.

WINSTON-SALEM - James Linwood Maness, 82, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pine Hills Cemetery in Burlington with the Rev. Don Swinney and Bill Teague officiating.
He was a native of Bear Creek, N.C., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the widower of Clara Garrett Maness. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church, a member of Winston Lodge #167 A.F. & A.M. and VFW Post 5253.
Surviving are sons, Jim Maness of Asheboro and Bill Maness of Chapel Hill; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

DARLINGTON, S.C. - Lawton Elizabeth Skipper Finch, 89, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Swift Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Peter Rivera and the Rev. Jody Wynn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She was a native of Chesterfield County, S.C., and the widow of Floyd Finch Sr. She was retired from the Darlington Cotton Mill and was an accomplished Seamstress.
Surviving are daughters, Mary Lou Anderson of Biscoe and Dorothy Anne Anderson of Darlington; son, Floyd Finch Jr. of Hartsville; sisters, Sarah Nason of Bishopville, Nancy Watford of Lydia and Maggie Hyatt of Camden; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - Gladys May Bowles, 83, of 1302 Old Cox Road, Asheboro, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Schwartz officiating.
She was a native of Roanoke, Va., a member of the Randleman Senior Center and she attended Oakhurst Baptist Church.
Surviving is brother, William S. Bowles of Roanoke, Va.

John J. Croft Jr.
ASHEBORO - John James Croft Jr., 88, of Friends' Home West, Greensboro, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at the home.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, with Dr. Everette Thomas officiating.
He was a native of Ionia, Mich., the widower of Katherine Scott Croft and a 1935 graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Architecture. He worked in Atlanta and Montgomery, Ala., and opened his own architectural practice in Asheboro. He was a licensed architecture in six states and designed Lindley Park School, which was nominated for a national award. He was a World War II U.S. Army Reserves veteran and later retired from the reserves as a colonel. He was the Senior Warden for the Church of the Good Shepherd, a member of the Shriners, a Rotarian where he served as the president of the Asheboro Rotary Club, and the first Director of Civil Defense for Randolph County.
Surviving are daughter, Joan Simons of Greensboro; son, John Croft III "Jay" of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the church following the service.

He was a native of Montgomery County and an upholsterer.

She was a native of Montgomery County, the widow of Cletus D. Dennis and a retired employee of Energizer. She was a charter member of Central Carolina Community Church, where she worked with the nursery ministry and food teams.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Martha Ann Peacock and Stephen Peacock of the home; son, Michael S. Dennis of Randleman; sisters, Edith East of Pekin, Janice Voncannon of Troy; brothers, Bill Brookshire of Ellerbe, Rush Brookshire of Mt. Gilead; three grandchildren.
