ASHEBORO - DeEtte Farlow Dickerson, 63, of 2332 Woodridge Drive, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Asheboro Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. J.C. Miles and the Rev. Tommy Fuquay officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a retired hosiery mill worker and she attended Asheboro Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are husband, Herman D. Dickerson of the home; daughter, Christine Brady of Asheboro; son, Barney W. Brady of Biscoe; sisters, DeEtta Hill, Blanche Satterfield, Pearlie Miller, all of Asheboro, Nellie Hunt of Thomasville, Essie Brady of Biscoe, Alberta Hurley of Wilmington; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

Joe L. Kearns
ASHEBORO - Joe Lamarr Kearns, 61, of Seoul, Korea, formerly of Asheboro, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea.

A memorial service will be held Friday in Seoul, Korea. Burial will be at a later date in Lawton, Okla.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from the U.S. Army and employed with the Civil Service as an English teacher and Drug and Alcohol counselor.

Surviving are wife, Yvonne Jean Kearns of Seoul, Korea; son, Jeffrey Allen Kearns of Lexington; daughters, Jackie Tripplett of Archdale, Jodi Wright of Ramseur; sister, Hilda K. Pitts of Thomasville; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren.

Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, provided the information.

Lucy M. Shelton
CANDOR - Lucy McCaskill Shelton, 92, of Rockingham, formerly of Candor, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, Ga.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. J.J. Manning officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, the widow of Ollie Shelton, a Registered Nurse and a 1930 graduate of Burris Memorial Hospital, High Point, in nursing training.

Surviving are sister, Louise Lay of Granite Quarry; brother, Wayne McCaskill of Georgia.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Marvin R. Hancock
ROBBINS - Marvin Ray Hancock, 69, of 1743 Pine Grove Church Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Browns Chapel Christian Church, with the Rev. Brady Stephens and the Rev. Gary Waisner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites.

He was a native of Moore County, a member of the local Union 421, Elise Lodge #555 A.F. & A.M., Robbins, and Eastern Star Lodge #283, Robbins, where he was a Past Patron.

Surviving are wife, Verna Mae Allen Hancock of the home; son, Tony Curtis Hancock of Robbins; daughters, Cindy H. Sheffield of Mt. Gilead, Kelly H. Stout of Robbins; brothers, Thurman Hancock of Seagrove, Junior Hancock, Wilton Hancock, both of Robbins; sisters, Vera Needham, Verlene Aderholt, both of Robbins; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Aster H. Maness
ROBBINS - Aster Hackney Maness, 80, of Howard's Mill Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, in Pinelake Health & Rehabilitation Center, Carthage.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Joseph W. Forbes officiating.

He was a native of Moore County, attended Smyrna United Methodist Church and formerly employed at Carroll Foods.

Surviving is sister, Georgia M. Smith of Carthage.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday.

Ruby T. Hurley
WEDDINGTON - Ruby Thompson Hurley, 86, of 1115 Baron Road, formerly of Troy, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, with the Rev. James Caviness officiating. Burial will be in Uwharrie United Methodist Church Cemetery, Troy.

She was a native of Stanly County, a member of First United Methodist Church and a retired employee of Smitherman Cotton Mill.

Surviving are son, John Hurley of Weddington; sister, Mary T. Kelly of Troy; brother, Rex Thompson of Troy; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-2 p.m. Saturday.

Way B. Robbins
ASHEBORO - Way Bright Robbins, 86, of 812 Ridgeway Drive, Asheboro, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Darrell Frye and the Rev. Don Jarrell officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a member of Mt. View Methodist Church and a retired employee with Hedgecock Builders Supply after 59 years.

Surviving are wife, Edith Robbins of Asheboro; daughters, Clara Thomas, Nancy Stallings, both of Asheboro; half brothers, Odell Jackson, John Jackson, both of Randleman; half sister, Ettie Mae Tyson of Randleman; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Barry S. Davis
ARCHDALE - Barry Steven Davis, 39, of 2795 Rob Cruthis Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where he was a member, with Father Louie Canino officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Salisbury, a U.S. Navy veteran and an employee with S.K. McBryde, Inc., Colfax. He was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at his church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are wife, Sandra Lee Corron Davis of the home; daughter, Becky Davis of the home; son, Chris Davis of the home; parents, Thales and Madeline Smith Davis of Churchland; grandmother, Catherine W. Davis of Churchland; brother, Olin T. Davis IV of Lexington, S.C.; sister, Amy D. Knox of Youngsville.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Edwin W. Hooper
THOMASVILLE - Edwin Willys Hooper, 78, a resident of Thomasville and Harkers Island, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at the Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

A private family memorial service will be held on Harkers Island at a later date.

He received his undergraduate and law degrees from Wake Forest University and was an attorney serving the Thomasville-Davidson County area. He served with the Merchant Marines. He was a charter member of the Thomasville Buck Club, former member of the Thomasville Jaycees, member of Thomasville Masonic Lodge 214 A.F. & A.M., and a past member of the Commission for Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse. He was a founding member of the Core Sound Water Fowl Museum at Harkers Island and a former Democratic precinct chairman, former state party executive board member and worked for the gubernatorial campaigns of former governors, Dan Moore, Kerr Scott and Jim Martin. In 1989 he donated land in Thomasville for a city park as a tribute to Will and Dorothy Harper, prominent African-American leaders in Thomasville.

Surviving are wife, Elwanda Yates Hooper of the home; daughter, Dr. Celia R. Hooper of Pittsboro; stepdaughter, LaVera Bennett of Woodlief; stepsons, John R. Yates of Denton and Kevin C. Yates of Thomasville; sister, Mary Ann Hooper Moore of Franklinville; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Davidson County Public Library, Thomasville Branch, 14 Randolph St., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen R. Varner
DENTON - Helen Rayhill Varner, 91, of Belgrove Road, Tobaccoville and formerly Denton, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Sandy Young officiating. Burial will follow in Clear Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Bon Weir, Texas, a homemaker and a former member of Clear Springs United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Clay Varner.

Surviving are son, W. Keith Varner of Stanleyville; daughters, Pam Clifton of Tobaccoville and Carolyn Ring of Pfafftown; brother, Hubert Rayhill of Lexington; sister, Bessie Stafford of Asheboro; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service.

Anthony W. Chrisco
SEAGROVE - Anthony Wayne Chrisco, 47, of 7072 Ossie Hayes Road, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold Baker and the Rev. Craig Asbill officiating. Burial will follow in Waddell Memorial Chapel Cemetery.

He was a Randolph County native, a graduate of Southwestern Randolph High School and a retired worker from Luck's Food.

Surviving are sister, Marcia C. Hussey of Seagrove; brother, Alvin Lewis Chriscoe of Seagrove; stepson, Douglas Brim of Seagrove; one stepgrandson.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Saturday; other times at the home of Alvin Chriscoe, 7271 Kiser Road, Seagrove.

James C. Smith
BISCOE - James Calvin "Dynamite" Smith, 75, of 309 E. Main St., died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, Biscoe, where he was a member, with the Rev. Larry Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Biscoe Cemetery.

He was a Cabarrus County native and was retired from Springs Industries, Inc. with 30 years of service. He was a member of the Emergency Medical Rescue and a former reserve deputy for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.

Surviving are wife, Betty Maness Smith of the home; son, Ronald Smith of Asheboro.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

John T. Brown
BENNETT - John Thomas Brown, 73, of 8010 N.C. 22/42, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Duke Medical Center, Durham.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Chris Wood and the Rev. Hayes Ritter officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was a Randolph County native, retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. He sang in the choir at his church and had served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He was also the banjo player for the Richland Partners Bluegrass Band.

Surviving are wife, Frances Bridges Brown of the home; son, Michael Brown of Frankfort, Ind.; daughter, Carolyn Brown of Asheboro; brothers, Henry Brown, Garland Brown and Rufus Brown, all of Bennett; sisters, Peggy Hammer and Lucille Brown, both of Asheboro; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Saturday; other times at the residence.

Arlene McRae
TROY - Arlene Stubb Little McRae, 84, of 1017 N. Main St., died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Airy A.M.E. Zion Church, Mt. Gilead, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tyrone Rigsby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She was a Stanly County native, president of the Senior Choir at Mt. Airy, a member of the Missionary Board and a member of the OES, Prince Hall Affiliated. She was the widow of Arthur McRae.

Surviving are sons, Arthur D. McRae of Hampton, Va., John D. McRae and Vernon L. McRae, both of Mt. Gilead, Preston McRae of Wadesboro; daughters, Eula Pemberton and Florence McQueen, both of High Point, Rosemary Pemberton of Mt. Gilead, Valerie E. Clark of Charlotte and Eva Neal of Mt. Gilead; brother, Delancy Little of Newport News, Va.; sister, Leola Bazemore of Newport News, Va.; 40 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday; other times at the home.

Janet Kapiko
DURHAM - Janet Kapiko, 64, of Willow Bridge Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at her home.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Grey Stone Baptist Church, with Dr. Malbert Smith and Albert Allen officiating.

She was a graduate of Durham High School.

Surviving are husband, Jerold Kapiko; mother, Mildred Hester of Durham; daughters, Kathi LeHew of Hendersonville, Elizabeth Kallail of Phoeniz, Ariz., Robin Burke of Huron, Ohio, and Traci Painter of Kansas City, Mo.; son, David S. Burke Jr. of Durham; stepchildren, Robin Morris, Jay Kapiko and Kalani Kapiko; sisters, Kathleen Hilbert of Bristol, Tenn., and Cheryl Hester of Durham; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
