RANDLEMAN - Mary I. Powers, 78, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Gene Avery officiating. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Greenhills Memory Garden, Claypool Hill, Va.
She was a naive of Virginia, the widow of Barney R. Powers Sr., a homemaker and she attended Lamb of God Church.
Surviving are daughters, Doris Doddie of Livonia, Mich., Mary Ruth Powers of Asheboro; sons, James "Jim" Powers of Franklinville, Barney Powers Jr. of Asheboro; sister, Garnette Jennings of Indiana; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.
Raymond Stephens
LIBERTY - Raymond "Ben" Stephens, 84, of 614 E. Swannanoa Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Friends Meeting, where he was a member. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
He was a native of Alamance County and a volunteer fireman with the Liberty Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are wife, Pandora J. Stephens of the home; daughter, Brenda Hardison of Kinston; sister, Mary Fogleman of Liberty; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

James Smitherman Sr.
TROY - James "Jim" Samuel Smitherman Sr., 88, of Crossroads Retirement Center, Asheboro, formerly of East Chestnut Street, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Mike Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in Southside Cemetery.
He was a Montgomery County native, a graduate of N.C. State University and a retired Finance Officer of Montgomery County.
Surviving are son, Jimmy "Smut" Smitherman of Beaufort; daughter, Susan S. Snuggs of Concord; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

DENTON - Annie Lee Hughes Hulin, 86, of Hulin-McDowell Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Billy Joe Yates officiating. Entombment will be in Pierce's Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Charlie Hulin and a retired employee of Amazon Cotton Mill, Thomasville.
Surviving are daughters, Joann McDowell of Denton, Shirley Rhodes of Fletcher; brother, Kenny Hughes of Lexington; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home noon-2 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, other times at the home.
Evelyn C. Alexander
CONCORD - Evelyn Cox Alexander, 92, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Carolinas Specialty Hospital.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Rocky River Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Clyde Cook and the Rev. Eugene Boelte officiating.
She was a native of Staley, the widow of William Kemp Alexander and a former librarian. She was a member of the Presbyterian Women, a former youth leader and recipient of "A Faithful Servant Commendation" by her church. She was a former member of Rocky River Reapers Garden Club and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Northeast Medical Center of Concord. She attended school in Asheboro and Staley and was a 1928 graduate of Staley High School. She attended Campbell College, was a graduate of Women's College with a B.S. degree and a teacher at Harrisburg High School. She was a member of NEA, NCEA, the Cabarrus Retired School Personnel and Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.
Surviving is brother, Marshall Cox of Staley.
The family will be at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday.

ASHEBORO - Desso Lafayette Hudson, 79, of 855 Woodcrest Drive, Asheboro, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home.
Funeral service will be 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. W. Russell Ward Jr. and the Rev. William Leist officiating. Burial will be Monday in Arab Memorial Cemetery, Arab, Ala.
He was a native of Oneonta, Ala., a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a retired employee of Blue Bell, Inc., a member of First Presbyterian Church and a member of American Legion Post #45.
Surviving are wife, Doris Ford Hudson; sons, Stephen Desso Hudson and Phillip Anthony Hudson, both of Asheboro; sisters, Bertha Payne and Mozell Tolbert, both of Oneonta, Ala., Josie Lamb of Arab, Ala.

He was a native of Randolph County, a student at Charles W. McCrary School and he attended First Assembly, Asheboro.

He was a native of High Point, a former truck driver for Old Dominion Freight Line and of the Baptist faith.

She was a native of Alamance County, the widow of Leonard Smith Russell and a retired employee of Liberty Hosiery.

He was a native of Montgomery County and a retired employee of Jordan Lumber Company, Mt. Gilead.

He was a native of Charlotte, a U.S. Air Force veteran and self-employed.

He was a native of Hintermuchlen, Germany, a retired master mason, later worked as a tile setter and was a member of the senior bowling league.

Mueller of the home; daughter, Renate Auman of Asheboro; sisters, Liesel Reifenberg of Gemuenden, Germany, Annemie Jung of Ailertchen, Germany; brothers, Ewald Mueller of Norken, Germany, Ernst Mueller of Hoehn, Germany, Heinz Benner and Hermann Benner, both of Langenhahn, Germany; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
