CARBONTON - Ellender Elizabeth Hoosier Hash, 71, of Carbonton, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pine Branch Baptist Church, Mouth of Wilson, Va., with the Rev. George Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She was a native of Pulaski, Va., the widow of Junior Claude Hash and a member of the Carbonton United Methodist Church. She was a retired food service worker.
Surviving are sons, Bobby R. Hash of Carbonton, David Hash of Lemon Springs and Jimmy Hash of Highfalls; brother, Paul Hoosier of Fries, Va.; sisters, Nancy Cole of Pulaski, Va., Clara Freeman of Hillsville, Va., and Charlotte Shaw of Castleberry, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the Smith and Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Sunday and on Monday, noon-2 p.m., at the Pine Branch Baptist Church, Mouth of Wilson, Va.

ASHEBORO - Betty Henderson Smith, 62, of 392 Virgil Hill Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at her home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Pastor Bruce Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park.
She was a native of Marion County, S.C., and a member of Glory Bound Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Dixie Furniture and Lexington Furniture.
Surviving are J.T. Smith of Asheboro; sons, Rick Smith of Sophia and Timothy Smith of Asheboro; brothers, Jack Henderson of Franklinville and Leroy Henderson of Lumberton; sisters, Sally Garner of Lumberton and Vivian Causey of Dillion, S.C.; two grandchildren.

RANDLEMAN - Alma Caviness Huffman, 96, of 5106 Old Greensboro Road, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center, Trinity.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Salem United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. David McCauley officiating.
Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park.
She was a Randolph County native, a homemaker and the widow of Arlie Huffman.
Surviving are daughter, Bernice Varner of Wallburg; sons, Arlie "Buddy" Huffman Jr. of Trinity and Dean Huffman of Randleman; sisters, Alta York of Asheboro, Rebecca White of Elon, Donna Hinshaw and Mary Kimrey, both of Burlington; brothers, Billy Caviness and Tommy Caviness, both of Burlington; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

RANDLEMAN - Colleen Mary Pugh Callahan, 78, of 320 E. Naomi St., died Friday, March 14, 2003, at her home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with Paul Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Country Holiness Cemetery, Randleman.
She was a Randolph County native and retired from the Greensboro News and Record after 25 years of service.
Surviving are husband George Michael Callahan of Randleman.

RAMSEUR - Charles Earl Maness, 63, of 182 Wright St., died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at his home.

He was a Randolph County native, was of the Baptist faith and a truck driver for Stout Trucking.

She was a Chatham County native, a member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was the widow of Harvey Lee Brown.
Surviving are daughter, Nancy Tysor of Siler City; brother, Jessie R. Johnson of Siler city; four grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Rosa Mae Jordan Overman, 76, of 72 Chatham Business Drive, Pittsboro, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Siler City, with the Rev. Bill Harris officiating.
She was a native of High Point, the widow of Charles Houston Overman, a homemaker and a charter member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Surviving are daughter, Mary Lee Stout of Siler City; sons, Ray Overman and Johnny Overman, both of Apex, Gary Overman of Siler City; brother, Larry Jordan of Apex; sister, Faye Williams of Siler City; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Elder David S. Strickland, 80, of 1210 N. Sears Ave., died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at SunBridge Care of Siler City.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity United Holy Church.
He was a former pastor with Alston Chapel Church, Pittsboro, Margaret's Chapel Church, Staley, and Faith Gospel Tabernacle, Durham. He was the first African-American to run for Town Commissioner in Siler City, president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, a teacher at Interdenominational Bible Institute in Siler City and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are wife, Harriet Rosetta Groves; sons, the Rev. David T. Strickland of Greensboro, Henry Franklin Strickland of Asheboro; daughter, Tammie Strickland-Jordan of Siler City; sisters, the Rev. Margaret M. Rogers of Siler City, Florence Rodgers of Greensboro; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the church 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

BURLINGTON - Manley Calvin Hayes, 96, of 1209 Welch St., died Monday, March 17, 2003, at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Services, Burlington, with Dr. Tommy Willis officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
He was a native of Erect, the widower of Martha Friddle Hayes, the retired owner and operator of Midway Variety Store in Burlington and the former operator of Hayes Variety Store in Ramseur.
Surviving are sons, Robert R. Hayes, Harold G. Hayes, Michael C. Hayes, all of Burlington, Doyle L. Hayes of Reidsville; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Sullivan County, Tenn., the widow of Howard Thomas White Sr., a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church, a professional seamstress and a high school graduate. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from East Tennessee State University.
Surviving are daughter, Carolyn Elizabeth Darnell of Asheboro; sons, Howard Thomas White Jr. of Louisville, Tenn., Gene White of Bluff City, Tenn.; brothers, Carroll E. Nichels and Robert Nichels, both of Bluff City, Tenn.; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
