He was a native of Moore County, a retired mechanic with the N.C. Department of Transportation and was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and attended Eleazer United Methodist Church.
Surviving are wife, Anna Lee Hardister Simmons of the home; sons, James Wayne Simmons of Denton, Danny Ray Simmons of Troy; brothers, Marvin Simmons of Asheboro, Vernon Simmons of Troy; sisters, Pearl Frye, Margaret Hurley, both of Denton; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for him and his wife, Grace M. Tarlton, who died Sunday, July 12, 1998, in Wilmington, will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Wadesboro, with the Rev. Ronnie Stewart officiating.
He was a native of Wadesboro, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and was retired from Yellow Freight Lines.
