Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Terry Burris and the Rev. D. C. Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a former Department of Correction employee and retired from the Transportation Department of the Moore County Schools as a mechanic.

Surviving are wife, Mazelle Gibson Crabtree; daughter, Virginia Monroe of Eagle Springs; son, Ralph Crabtree of Clayton; sister, Ruby Maness of Carthage; brothers, Curtis Crabtree of Carthage, Carlton Crabtree of Grainger, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 6-8 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Olivia D. Blalock
OXFORD - Olivia Daniel Blalock, 101, of 5728 Hobgood Road, Rougemont, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the home of her daughter.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Keith Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Granville County, the widow of Wallace A. Blalock Sr., a homemaker and a practical nurse.

Surviving are daughters; Margaret B. Adcock of Oxford, Mary Jane B. King of Asheboro; son, Wallace A. Blalock Jr. of Rougemont; half sister, Joyce D. Slaughter of Oxford; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Eakes Funeral Home, Oxford, 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, other times at the home of Margaret B. Adcock, 1236 N.C. 158, Oxford, N.C. 27565.

ASHEBORO - Emily A. Leak Lane of 456 Cross St., Asheboro, died, Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Look To Jesus Christian Center, with Pastor Dexter Trogdon Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Surviving are daughter, Cynthia Lane Carter of Asheboro; sons, Gregory Lane of Salisbury, Ken Lane of Asheboro; sister, Johnny Mae Tucker of Asheboro; brother, Shannon Leak of Browns Summit.

ASHEBORO - Martha Rich Pierce, 79, of 757 Spencer Meadow Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain View Independent Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a Randolph County native, a 1942 graduate of Asheboro High School and retired from Kayser-Roth Corp. after 32 years.

Surviving are husband, John Winfred Pierce; daughter, Linda P. Bristow of Asheboro; sons, John Wayne Pierce and Arthur Eugene Pierce, both of Asheboro, Brantley Lee Pierce of Sanford, Fla.; sister, Edith Rich Hunt of Asheboro; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

RANDLEMAN - Gilbert "Gib" Ray Davis, 67, of 5959 Gilbert Davis Drive, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at his home in Cedar Square.

Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Square Friends Meeting, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ben Hurley, the Rev. Ken Helser and the Rev. Eric Woods officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Marie Webster Davis, a 1954 graduate of Trinity High School, a farmer and an auctioneer in Randolph County. He was a Mason and Shriner and member of the Balfour Lodge. He was a charter member of the New Market Civitan Club, served in the N.C. House of Representatives and owned and operated Davis Pony Rides.

Surviving are daughters, Diane D. Welborn of Trinity, Tammy D. Dillon of Pleasant Garden; brother, Robert "Slappy" Davis of Randleman; sister, Anna Lee Edwards of Archdale; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

The family will be at the church, immediately following the service.

Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, is in charge of arrangements.

PLEASANT GARDEN - P.S. "Jake" Taylor, 73, of 5798 Chaucer Trail, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Level Cross Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jerry Mills officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Grayson County, Va., a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a retired member of Fellowship Hall.

Surviving are wife, Ingrid Taylor of Pleasant Garden; daughter, Jennifer T. Hyatt of Randleman; sons, Stephen Taylor of Worcester, Mass., Joseph Peltier of Pleasant Garden, Ray Peltier of Richmond, Va.; brothers, David O. Taylor of Durham, Harry L. Taylor and Haskell D. Taylor, both of Asheboro; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

DENTON - Clarence E. Fine, 63, of Pleasant Union Road, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Ray Swaney and the Rev. Claudie Harrison officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Union United Church of Christ Cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a former member of Alleghany United Methodist Church and a former employee of Cagle Sawmill. He attended High Rock Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Mary Alice McDowell Fine of the home; brother, Dwayne Fine of Lexington; sisters, Temple Lou Fine and Janice Ruby Fine, both of Denton.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

ROBBINS - Alisha Dawn Garner, 21, of 1979 Dan Road, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, in an auto accident in the Needham's Grove Church community.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Needham's Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jay Bissett and the Rev. David Beck officiating. Burial will be in Bascom Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a 2003 graduate of Appalachian State University and an intern in the Watauga County District Attorney's office in Boone.

Surviving are parents, Kim and Deborah Williams Garner of the home; fiancé, Ryan Bryson of Boone; grandparents, Blennie L. Williams of Eagle Springs, Lennie Garner of Robbins.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

ROBBINS - Devin Michelle Garner, 17, of 1979 Dan Road, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, in an auto accident in the Needham's Grove Church community.

She was a native of Moore County and a graduating senior at North Moore High School where she was in several clubs. She was a North Carolina Scholar and had received a Drum Major Award, a North Carolina State University Design Camp award and a Daughters of the American Revolution Christopher Columbus Essay Award.

Surviving are parents, Kim and Deborah Williams Garner of the home; fiancé, Daniel Hartley of Asheboro; grandparents, Blennie L. Williams of Eagle Springs, Lennie Garner of Robbins.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

CARTHAGE - A. David Barker, 80, of 6090 Glendon-Carthage Road, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Priest Hill Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Michael Herring officiating. Burial will be in Cross Hill Cemetery.

He was a native of Stokes County and a retired road supervisor with the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Surviving are wife, Gladys Asbill Barker; sons, Norman Barker of Carthage, Arthur Barker of Cameron; sisters, Dorothy Barber and Annie Ruth Booth, both of Carthage, Clara Brundrett of Pinebluff, Thelma Jean Fore of Sanford; brothers, Gene Barker of Pittsboro, John Barker of Sanford; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Cletus L. Franklin
CANDOR - Cletus Lassiter Franklin, 83, formerly of Warehouse Street, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Manor Care, Pinehurst

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Candor United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Candor Town Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Carl Franklin, a volunteer with FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital and Meals on Wheels and a retired office manager with Sandhills Mental Health.

Surviving are daughter, Brenda Wilson of East Hampstead, N.H.; son, Ronald D. Franklin of Pinehurst; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday.

EAGLE SPRINGS - John Legrande, 77, of 1375 N.C. 211, died Friday, May 17, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Airy A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. James Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are Geneva Tanner of the home; sister, Marie Black of Winston-Salem; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Virginia B. Jacoby, 80, of 1200 Talisman Drive, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at The Oratory, Rock Hill, S.C.

She was a native of Indian Head, Md., the widow of Joseph F. Jacoby and a former resident of Asheboro.

Surviving are daughters, Karen Krauszer of Rock Hill, S.C., Ellen Morrow of Douglasville, Ga.; son, Mark Jacoby of Raleigh; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Poteet Funeral Home, Augusta, Ga., is in charge of arrangements.

ASHEBORO - James Harbinson Kearns, 78, of 633 Parkview St., Asheboro, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. William Christopher Thore and the Rev. Barry Queen officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery with military honors.

He was a native of Troy and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He attended Catawba College. He was a retired Finance Officer from Sheraton Finance and a member of the Lloyd Bible Class at his church.

Surviving are wife, Juanita Jeffries Kearns; brothers, William H. Kearns of Troy, Donald J. Kearns of High Point; sisters, Ruth K. Leach and Nancy K. Brown, both of Troy.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

ASHEBORO - Evelyn Dorothy Owens Vetovich, 79, formerly of 532 Ridgeway Circle, Asheboro, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant UMC Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard C. Hill and the Rev. Terry D. Bailey officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Johnny Joseph Vetovich and a retired employee of Walker Shoe Co.

Surviving is sister, Lucille Owens Bridges of Greensboro.

Benny D. Voncannon
ASHEBORO - Benny Dickens Voncannon, 63, of 1532 Sylvan Woods Drive, Asheboro, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Roger Wiles and the Rev. Jeremy Sink officiating.

He was a native of Cabarrus County, retired co-owner of Voncannon Trucking and a former deacon, Sunday School teacher and lay pastor. He played baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1960-1962 and was a former Little League and Pony League coach for Asheboro Parks & Recreation Department.

Surviving are wife, Martha Thomas Voncannon; sons, Benny Dickens "Bengie" Voncannon Jr. of Randleman, Eddie Voncannon of Asheboro; brother, Johnny Voncannon of Asheboro; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-2:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

He was a native of Chatham County and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are brother, Henry H. Kidd of Shallotte; foster brother, Roy C. Maness of Asheboro.

WEST END - Allan P. Forrest, 78, of 1539 Murdocksville Road, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

He was a World War II U.S. Navy Air Corps veteran and a starter-ranger of Pinehurst #7 golf course.

CANDOR - Grace Walsh Boyd, 80, of Boyd Road, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at her home.

She was a native of Wilkes County, the widow of Lonnie H. Boyd and a homemaker. She attended Hickory Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are sons, Samuel Boyd and Merrill Boyd, both of Candor; sisters, Faye Walker of Winston-Salem, Helen Spaulding of Wilkesboro; brothers, Wade Walsh, Jerry Walsh and Jesse Walsh, all of Wilkesboro, Homer Walsh of Whitsett.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.
