Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Way Sanctuary of Deliverance, Eagle Springs, with the Bishop Lorenzo Purcell officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Canaan Community Cemetery, Roseland, La.
Surviving are daughters, Sandra Carter of Hammond, La., Candace Ross of Troy, Niakia Claggett of Suffolk, Va.; sons, Fredrick Brooks of Seven Lakes and James Patrick Brooks of Biscoe; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

WADEVILLE - Nathaniel "Pete" Whitaker died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Pinehurst Nursing and Rehab Facility, Pinehurst.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Clarks Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Wadeville, with burial following in the Bruton Cemetery.
He was a Glen White, Va., native and was a retired sawmill worker.
Surviving is sister, Delois Westbrook of Wadeville; brother, Eugene Whitaker of Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Frances J. Byrd
ALBEMARLE - Frances Jones Byrd, 88, of 625 Bethany Road, formerly of Eden and Morganton, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Stanly Manor Nursing Center, Albemarle.
Entombment service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Overlook Cemetery Mausoleum, Eden, with the Rev. Charles Gibbons officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Albemarle, where she was a member.
She was a Rockingham County native, a 1933 graduate of Averett College, Danville, Va., and active in her former churches in Eden and Morganton. She was the widow of first husband, Claude Lynn Phillips, and second husband, John Franklin Byrd.
Surviving are son, Claude Lynn Phillips Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; and daughter, the Rev. Martha Buff Welch of Franklinville.

RIVER FORREST, Ill. - Betty Turpin Swanson, 76, of 50 Park Ave., died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, Ill.
Memorial service will be held at a later date.
She was a Portsmouth, Va., native, a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the widow of Carl Swanson.
Surviving are son, John Swanson of Victoria, Texas; daughter, Lisa Glover of Coleridge; brother, John Turpin of Greensboro; four grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - Fay Ardyth Inglee O'Hara died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Clapp's Rehabilitation Center, Asheboro.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Funeral Home, Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Dr. Howard Backus officiating. Burial will be in New York at a later date.
She was a Washington County, N.Y. native and an advocate of the Humane Society. She was retired from Hecht's.
Surviving are sons, Patrick O'Hara of Asheboro and Dennis Scott O'Hara of S.C.; sister, Jackie Pickens of Morris, N.Y.; brother, Phillip Inglee of Huntington Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

SOPHIA - Frank Daniel Griffin, 68, of 3035 Ivory Lane, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at his home.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with Dr. Jeffery S. Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in Guilford Memorial Park, Greensboro.
He was a Rockingham County native and a self-employed contractor for over 35 years.
Surviving are wife, Shirley Routh Griffin; sons, David Griffin of Greensboro, Paul Griffin of Reidsville, and Carl Griffin of Walterboro, S.C.; stepsons, Dale Loflin, Ricky T. Loflin and Scott Loflin, all of Sophia; stepdaughter, Teresa L. Haithcox of Sophia; brothers, Charlie Griffin and Richard Griffin, both of Danville, Va., George Griffin and John Griffin, both of Kernersville, James Griffin of Madison, and Harry Griffin of Climax; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Mary Frances Willett Deaton, 84, of 905 N. Dogwood Avenue, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Chatham Hospital, Inc.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Patrick Fuller and the Rev. Bob Wachs officiating. Burial will follow in Staley Cemetery, Staley.
She was a Chatham County native, a member of Staley United Methodist Church, and was retired from A.J. Schneierson and Sons. She was the widow of Bernard Worth Deaton.
Surviving are daughters, Judy D. Thomas of Pittsboro and Janice D. White of Bear Creek; sons, Don Deaton and Doug Deaton, both of Siler City; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Jack Ruth Hancock, 70, of 425 South Fir Avenue, died Wednesday June 18, 2003, at Chatham Hospital, Inc.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Siler City, where he was a member, with the Rev. Joe Casteel officiating. Entombment will follow in Chatham Memorial Park.
He was a Chatham County native, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served on the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt. He was a member of Siler City Moose Lodge, the Siler City Jaycees, and was retired from Hancock Lumber Company.
Surviving are wife, Patsy Wood Hancock of Siler City; daughters, Sharon Marie Summer of Gastonia and Celia Ann Hancock of Greensboro; sister, Doris H. Allen of Ramseur; brother, Robert G. Hancock of Siler City; two grandchildren.
The family will be at First United Methodist Church 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

BISCOE - James Ervin Brewer, 71, of 317 E. Main St., died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, at First Baptist Church, Biscoe, where he was a member, with the Rev. Larry Wilson and the Rev. Lacy V. Frye officiating. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery, West End.
He was a Moore County native and a retired track supervisor with Norfolk-Southern Railroad. He was a member of Biscoe Masonic Lodge #437 A.F. & A.M., and Biscoe VFW. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving are wife, Jean Pusser Brewer of the home; daughters, Teresa Lamonds of Candor and Penny Locklear of Eagle Springs; sons, Eddie Brewer of Lancaster, S.C. and David Brewer of Biscoe; brother, Cecil Brewer of Pinebluff; six grandchildren; one great-grandson.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakland Missionary Baptist Church, Ramseur. Burial will follow in Oakland-McCrary Cemetery.
Surviving are wife, Charlotte Staley Feaster of the home; brothers, Ernest Feaster of Sanford and Monroe Feaster of Siler City; sister, Betty Feaster of Siler City.

He was a Nash County native, a self-employed heavy equipment operator and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are wife, Leona Lynch Morgan of Bear Creek; sons, Ricky Morgan of Bear Creek and Randy Morgan of Silk Hope; brothers, Wayne Morgan of Raleigh and Percy Morgan of Middlesex; sister, Peggy Murray of Wendell; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren.

BISCOE - Paul Raymond Britt, 76, of 183 Long Branch Lane, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Hayes Ritter, the Rev. Les Wicker, the Rev. James Hamilton and the Rev. Jack Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic rites and military honors.
He was a Moore County native, a soil conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 25 years and a member of Biscoe Masonic Lodge #437 A.F. & A.M.
Surviving are daughters, Phyllis Wicker of Lake Geneva, Wis., Dianne Thompson of Oakridge, Paulette McIntyre of Biscoe and Jackie Hutching of Richmond, Va.; brother, Melvin Britt of Zebulon; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Uniontown, Pa., and retired from Centel as a business account representative.
Surviving are husband, Donald Gordon of the home; daughters, Deborah Gordon and Karen Gordon, both of Asheboro; sons, Mark Gordon of Asheboro and Barry Gordon of Goose Creek, S.C.; sister, Virginia Cornish of Uniontown, Pa.; one granddaughter.

He was a Randolph County native, attended West Bend United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Asheboro Home Builders Association. He was a retired former owner of Asheboro Well Co. and West 49 Mobile Home Park.
Surviving are wife, Dorothy Skeen Frye of Asheboro; daughters, Linda Burrow, Kathy Grubbs and Pam Shaw, all of Asheboro; sister, Willa Mae Cagle of Asheboro; seven grandchildren.

He was a Guilford County native and retired from Phillips Funeral Home where he was employed for 40 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a paramedic in the Pacific during World War II.
Surviving are wife, Frances Crutchfield of the home; son, Randolph Foster Crutchfield of Goldsboro; sister, Hallie Jones of Foxfire.
