Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Friday at New Light Baptist Church, Roaring River, with the Rev. Glen Caudill and the Rev. David Key officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She was a native of Wilkes County, a member of Rachel Baptist Church and a beauty shop owner in Bartlett, Tenn. She was a beautician instructor and a certified public accountant in North Carolina, a member of the Governor's Council on Disabilities (ADA) and a member of the Mayor's Committee on Disabled Persons of Randolph County.
Surviving are daughter, Portia M. Wood of Memphis, Tenn.; brothers, Ralph Johnson of Memphis, Tenn., Tim Shepherd of Roaring River; sister, Patsy Roach of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
The family will be at Hodges Funeral Home, Elkin, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

LIBERTY - Edith Clapp Pierce, 81, of 5744 Julian Airport Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at her home.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian.
She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Clyde Pierce and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.
Surviving are daughter, Linda P. Jackson of Siler City; sons, Gene Pierce and Gray Pierce, both of Julian, Richard Pierce of the home, Phil Pierce of Pleasant Garden, Kerry Pierce and Bobby Pierce, both of Liberty; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

She was a Lee County native, a member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Surviving are husband, Hoke Brooks of Siler City; daughter, Janet Allen of Charlotte; sons, Mike Goldston of Sanford, Gary Goldston of Fuquay-Varina and Johnny Goldston of Siler City; sister, Gladys Hinsley of Henderson; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at First Reformed United Church of Christ, where she was a member, with the Rev. Mike Hooper officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.
She was a Davidson County native, a retired employee of American Nylon Company and the widow of Murphy L. Bates Sr.
Surviving are sons, Murphy Bates Jr. and Jimmy Lee Bates, both of Thomasville, and Ray "Eddie" Bates of Lexington; daughters, Pattie Sue Bates Everhart of Lexington and Barbara Bates Padgett of Statesville; sisters, Virginia Roberts and Kathleen Hunt, both of Asheboro, Ernestine Harvey of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one stepgrandchild.
He will remain at Davidson Funeral Home for visitation while the family will be at the church parlor 2:30-4 p.m. Saturday.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Lewis Grigg and member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a former employee of the Randolph Public Library - Randolph Room, a member of the Randolph County Genealogical Society and the Randolph County Historical Society.
Surviving are daughters, Nina G. Moody and Nita G. Bailey, both of Asheboro; sons, Robert Michael Grigg of Franklinville, Patrick Montie Grigg of Holly Ridge; sister, Rachel N. Sweeney of Asheboro; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

She was a Randolph County native and a member of Asheboro Friends Meeting. She was a graduate of Farmer High School and attended Crossnore Business College. She was retired from Acme-McCrary Hosiery Mill.
Surviving are husband, Arthur Colvin Boone; daughter, Phyllis Boone Setzer, Hickory; sister, Helen Byrd Beane of Asheboro; brother, James Harmon Byrd, Cary; three grandchildren.

He was a native of Surry County, a farmer and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

She was a Newberry County, S.C., native, a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the widow of Terriel E. Wessinger Sr.
Surviving are sisters, Mary Sease and Elizabeth Shannon, both of Newberry; brothers, Bloomer "Jack" Hawkins and Willie Hawkins, both of Newberry; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.

He was a Randolph County native and a member of Cedar Falls United Methodist Church. He was retired from Acme-McCrary Hosiery Mill and the widower of Edith Ferree Wright.
Surviving are daughter, Shirley Wingfield of Marietta, Ga.; brothers, Wade Wright and Newport Wright, both of Asheboro; sisters, Hazel Hoover and Ruth Phillips, both of Asheboro.

RANDLEMAN - Mazel Wall Baker, 87, of 223 Prestwick Dr., High Point, formerly of 109 Neal St., Randleman, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Bradford Village West, Kernersville.
Funeral service will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Kenneth L. Reaves officiating. Burial will be 9 a.m. Wednesday in New Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Randleman.
She was a Randolph County native, a member of First Baptist Church, Randleman, for over 62 years, and retired from Laughlin Hosiery Mill. She was the widow of husbands, Neal Dennis and Ralph Baker.
Surviving are sister, Nancy Trogdon of Randleman; brother, Harold Wall of High Point.

He was a native of Pitt County and a retired supervisor for Leggett and Platt, Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, attended Bible Holiness Church in Randleman and was the widower of Louise Britton Manning.
Surviving are daughter, Shirley Dale Roberson of Troy; sons, Bill Manning of Louisville, Tenn. and Claye Manning of Lexington, S.C.; sister, Ann R. Stalls of Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren.

She was a native of Atimonan Quezon Province, Philippines, and a graduate of Far Eastern University. She practiced law prior to the Japanese occupation of the Philippines.
