SILER CITY - Mollie Hardee Brooks, 94, of 918 N. Chatham Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Siler City Church of God, where she was a member, with the Rev. Neal Kight officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park.

She was a native of Horry County, S.C., and a retired employee of Hadley Peoples Manufacturing Company, Siler City.

Surviving are daughters, Mabel Todd of Siler City, Linda Bowman of Seagrove; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Shelby Causey, 86 W. Shannon Road, Siler City.

Marie S. Wall
SILER CITY - Marie Smith Wall, 84, of 4558 Pleasant Garden Road, Pleasant Garden, formerly of Siler City, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Clapp's Nursing Center Inc., Pleasant Garden.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Siler City, where she was a member, with the Rev. Joe Casteel officiating. Burial will be in Loves Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Siler City.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of William L. Wall, a graduate of Pfeiffer College and a member of the Ladies Golf Association and the Siler City County Club.

Surviving is daughter, Patricia W. Poe of Siler City.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 5-6:30 p.m. Friday.

M.B. Morris
LEXINGTON - M.B. Morris, 79, of Capistrano Shores Blvd., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, with the Rev. Clyde Settle officiating. Burial will be in Giles Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

He was a Montgomery County native and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was owner/operator of Morris Used Cars in Lexington and the widower of Fleta Maness Morris.

Surviving are daughters, Pat Medlin of Lexington and Bonnie Bates of Mocksville; three grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home, 6-8 p.m., Friday; other times at 2186 Burkhart Road, Lexington, home of a daughter.

Thurston G. Williams
SOPHIA - Thurston Gates Williams, 75, of 5339 Edgar Road, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at High Point Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, with the Rev. Franklin L. Fox officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was owner/operator of Williams Grocery and Williams Hardware in Glenola, a charter member of Gospel Baptist Church and later attended Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Dot Clark Williams; daughter, Claudia Ann Huddleston of Roanoke, Va.; sons, Thurston Gil Williams of Archdale, Dennis Ted Williams of Craven Pines; brothers, James Hubert Williams, Lewis Weldon Williams, Austin Jay Williams, Hoyt Wade Williams and Harvey Eugene Williams; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Charles L. Lovett Jr.
LIBERTY - Charles Leo Lovett Jr., 37, of Staleys Dairy Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty.

He was a native of Worcester, Mass., had worked for Worcester Control in Liberty for 20 years and was employed with Ultracraft in Liberty.

Surviving are wife, Dawn Greer Lovett, of the home; children, Rebecca, Trey, Todd and Jason Lovett, all of the home; father, Charles Leo Lovett Sr. of Liberty; brothers, James Lovett and Robert "Leppy" Lovett, both of Liberty; sisters, Diane Brotherton and Donna Small, both of Liberty.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday; other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to a fund set up for his family at BB&T Bank.

Louise H. Shoffner
JULIAN - Louise Holden Shoffner, 89, died Thursday Aug. 28, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Steve Joyce officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County and the widow of K.C. Shoffner.

Surviving are sons, Steve Shoffner and Roger Shoffner, both of Liberty, Tim Shoffner of Julian; sisters, Lake Graves, Marion Murray and Bettie Layton, all of Liberty; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

SILER CITY - Margaret Scotton Thomas, 84, of 85 Moore St., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Oakley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Timothy A. Howell officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of Dewvoy Thomas and a graduate of Staley High School, where she was a basketball and baseball player and a member of the debate team.

Surviving are son, John Wayne Thomas of Siler City; one grandson; one stepgrandson.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of the son, 51 Moore St., Siler City.

SILER CITY - James Edward Vestal, 75, of 301 East Second Street, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

He was a Chatham County native, a used car salesman, a mechanic and a self-employed truck driver. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Beryl Buckner Vestal, of the home; daughter, Cindy Vestal Belton of Greensboro; brother, Albert Vestal of Siler City; sisters, Frances V. Baker and Sue V. Mendenhall, both of Siler City; two grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; one stepgreat-granddaughter.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Shelby B. White
SEAGROVE - Shelby Jean Brown White, 48, of 4784 Busbee Road, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, in Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Riverside Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Harold Baker and the Rev. Gerald Hussey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, a Sunday School teacher at her church and an inspector at Arrow International, Randleman.

Surviving are husband, William "Billy" White; daughter, Shelia W. Maness of Carthage; brother, Billy Joe Brown of Walnut Cove; sisters, Thelma Pritchard of Morganton, Sylvia Justice of Star, Peggy Gorton of Belmont, Tammy Brown of Durham; one grandson.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Helen K. Hovey
HUNTERSVILLE - Helen Margaret Kerman Hovey, 71, formerly of Asheboro, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian ARP Church, Conway, S.C., with the Rev. Robert C. Hovey officiating.

She was a native of Niagara Falls, N.Y., a 1950 valedictorian graduate of Brockport High School and a 1997 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Coastal Carolina University, Conway, S.C., with a B.S. in history and German. She was the owner/operator of the Birdhaus in Asheboro and made cedar bird feeders, bird houses and custom picture frames.

Surviving are husband, Robert N. Hovey; daughters, Dianne K. Whiteheart of Charlotte, Karen L. Davis of Wake Forest, Carol L. Bray of Asheboro; son, Robert C. Hovey of Lakeland, Fla.; sister, Dorothy Kerman Knuth of Bellevue, Wash.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, is in charge of arrangements.

James A. Dixon, M.D.
ASHEBORO - James Arnold "Jim" Dixon, 46, of 468 Rock Crusher Road, Asheboro, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Holder officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a 1975 graduate of Asheboro High School, a 1985 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in medical technology and a 1991 graduate with honors of East Carolina University School of Medicine. He attended First United Methodist Church and was formerly employed with ProMed Urgent Care.

Surviving are mother, LaRue D. Bowers of Asheboro; sisters, Phyllis Rainey and Janice Luck, both of Asheboro, Susan Hardister of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Phyllis Rainey, 553 Morgan Country Road, Asheboro.

Willa B. Player
GREENSBORO - Dr. Willa Beatrice Player, 94, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bennett College, Pfeiffer Chapel.

She was a native of Jackson, Miss., attended public schools in Akron, Ohio, and attended Akron University. She was a 1929 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan, received an MA from Oberlin College, 1930, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University, 1948. She was a Latin and French instructor at Bennett College, and served as a director of both Religious Activities and Admissions, acting Dean, Coordinator of Instruction, acting President, the first woman president of Bennett and President Emerita. She retired as director of the Division of College Support, U.S. Office of Education, Department of Health, Education and Welfare after 11 years.

She was the first black cadet teacher (practice teacher) in Akron, Ohio public schools, the first woman president of the National Association of Schools and Colleges of the Methodist Church, the first black woman to serve as Trustee of Ohio Wesleyan and to serve as president of a four-year fully accredited liberal arts college, and the first woman leader in the Department of Developing Institutions in the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

She served on the Commissions of: National Religion and Race of the Methodist Church, Liberal Learning of the American Association of Colleges, and Funding Black Colleges; and on the Board of Trustees of Clark College, the Charles S. Mott Foundation and the Southern Fellowship Fund.

She received honorary doctorates from Morehouse College, Bennett College, University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Ohio Wesleyan University. She was the recipient of the Presidential Leadership Grant to Japan, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Superior Service and Distinguished Service awards from the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare; award for Outstanding Achievement in the field of Higher Education from the National Council for Negro Women; Silver Medallion Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews; and recognized as a humanitarian scholar by the Mott Foundation. She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, Greensboro, and of First United Methodist Church, Akron, Ohio,

The family will be at David D. Jones Student Union, Bennett College, immediately following the service.

Pauline J. Dunn
BURLINGTON - Pauline Jones Dunn, 89, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Funeral Service, Burlington. Graveside service will be 4 p.m. in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.

She was a native of Guilford County and the widow of Lacy Clinton Dunn.

Surviving is daughter, Nancy Detter of Burlington.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service.

PITTSBORO - Diana Lea Sowell, 43, of 135 Henderson Tanyard Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, in Ft. Bragg, Calif.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Siler City Church of Christ, Siler City, with Neal Fain officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

She was a native of Kansas City and district manager of H & R Block of Greensboro.

Surviving are husband, David Sowell of Pittsboro; sons, Henry Sowell and Richard Sowell, both of Pittsboro; father, Richard Wildermuth of Ohio; mother, Janell Wildermuth of Ohio; sisters, Danise Wilson of Minnesota, Debbie Bond of Nevada; brothers, Daron Wildermuth of Nevada, Dennis Wildermuth of Ohio.

HIGH POINT - Lona Hill Layell Parrish, 87, of 2401 Wilkes St., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, with Rev. Rick Wilkie officiating, Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

She was a native of Fries, Va., the widow of Jipsie Robert Layell and James Parrish, a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Thomasville and retired from Highland Mills after 41 years.

Surviving are son, Odie E. Funk of High Point; daughters, Alice Faye Kickler of Sophia, Lois Marie Kano of High Point, Louise Gallimore of Archdale; sisters, Margaret Frost and Louise Sports of Galax, Va., Ina Mae Ander; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at 900 Eden Terrace, Archdale.

SILER CITY - Harold Henry Brooks, 63, of 364 Green Hill Road, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Surviving are wife, Sarah C. Brooks of the home; sons, Harold Brooks of Durham, Shawn Alston of Siler City; daughter, Susan Brooks of Pittsboro; sisters, Margie Alston and Judy Pugh, both of Siler City; three grandchildren.

GOLDSTON - Helen Brown Baker, 81, of 2349 S. Main St., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Goldston Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Goldston Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, attended Goldston Baptist Church and was a retired cafeteria manager of Chatham Central High School.

Surviving are daughter, Judy B. Estridge of Mt. Gilead; son, Warren Baker of Pfafftown; sister, Frances Murchison Harris of Goldston; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Alberta B. Brady
BENNETT - Alberta Brewer Brady, 75, of 248 Lee St., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Chatham Hospital, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bennett Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tim Strider and the Rev. James Brewer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County and retired from Collins & Aikman after 41 years.

Surviving are son, Rufus Allen Brady of Siler City; sisters, Ruby Brady of Bennett, Geneva Williams of Siler City; two grandchildren; one great-grandson.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Roger L. Ward
RAMSEUR - Roger Lee Ward, 60, of 2803 Willie Wright Road, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. A.J. Hendricks officiating. Burial will be in the Ward Farm Family cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a farmer and a 1961 graduate of Ramseur High School.

Surviving are son, Tony Ward of Ramseur; daughters, Terri W. Saunders of Ramseur, Tammie W. Webster of High Point; parents, Will and Lona Phillips Ward of Ramseur; sister, Cheryl Scotten of Ramseur; brother, Phillip Ward of Siler City; three grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Terri W. Saunders, 1944 N.C. 22 South, Ramseur.
