ROBBINS - Lester Carlton Baber, 78, of 664 Timber Lane, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. James Stalnaker, the Rev. Clarence Garner and the Rev. Dale Matthews officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic rites.
He was a native of Lee County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of V.F.W. Post #9245, and a past master and secretary of Elise Lodge #555 AF & AM. He was a former Robbins town commissioner, a member of WOW and had served with the Robbins Rescue Squad. He was a graduate of Shuford Barber School, Durham, and the retired owner and operator of City Barber Shop, Robbins.
Surviving are wife, Alice Mae Purvis Baber of the home; son, Danny C. Baber of Seagrove; daughters, Delilah Brooks of Pinebluff, Debra Ritter of Biscoe; brother, Carlis Baber of Laurel, Md.; sisters, Mae Callaway of Laurel, Md., Wilma Diedrich of Davidson, Md., Irma Tessitori of McKinney, Texas, Lucille Emmons and Mary Edith Kidd, both of Robbins, Carol Lee Williams of Eagle Springs; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Peggy Harris Beal, 58, of 3720 Silk Hope Road, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at her home.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Lamont Hemminger officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park.
She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.
Surviving are husband, Johnnie M. Beal of Siler City; daughters, Penny Beal and Tammi B. Palmer, both of Siler City; brother, Jimmy Joe Harris of Siler City; sisters, Betty H. Johnson and Jeanette H. Stout, both of Siler City.

POLKTON - Michael Wayne Baucom, 59, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at his home.

He was a native of Cabarrus County and an employee of Yale Security/Norton Door Controls, Monroe.

He was a native of Portage County, Ohio, a self-employed contractor and he attended Central Carolina Community Church.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morning Star United Methodist Church Cemetery, Canton.
She was a native of Montgomery, Ala., and the widow of Rev. Frank C. Smathers.
Surviving are son, Dr. Keener McNeal Smathers of Morganton; daughter, Elizabeth S. Martinson of High Point; three sisters; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

He was a third-grade teacher at Granville County and Vance County Schools system.

RAMSEUR - Rayford Floyd Collins, 73, of Ramseur, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at Universal Health Care in Ramseur.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with Chaplain Larry Clark officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Knoll Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
He was a Wake County native and a member of The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Raleigh. He graduated from Hugh Marson High School in 1949 and received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from State College in Raleigh. He was a sharpshooter and gunner with the armored tank division in Germany. He was a retired engineer from Lorillard Tobacco Company in Greensboro, a member of the Chat-Hams Radio Club, the Guilford Amateur Society, two gun clubs and the National Rifle Association.
Surviving are wife, Gaynell Powell Collins, of the home; son, James Clifton Collins of Greensboro; daughter, Michelle Collins Brandon of Pleasant Garden; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

TROY - Robert Lee "Rob" Ford Jr., 81, formerly of Rockingham, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, in Albemarle.

He was a Richmond County native and a former member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was a farmer.

He was a Cumberland County native and an auto body mechanic. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict, a member of VFW Post 10940 and a member of the honor guard.

He was a Montgomery County native and was employed with Dunn Logging.

He was a Yadkin County native, a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post #382 in Sanford. He was owner/operator of Whitaker's Carpet Cleaners in Carthage.
Surviving are daughter, Allison Frye of Carthage, son, Landis Whitaker of Carthage; sisters, Frances McNeill of Aberdeen and Gladys Frye of Carthage; brother, Robert Whitaker of Florala, Ala.; two grandchildren.
