ASHEBORO - Margaret Hester Kinney, 78, of 824 Woodcrest Drive, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First E & R United Church of Christ, where she was a member, with the Rev. Dale Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a graduate of Wingate College and retired from Acme-McCrary Corp. after 37 years of service.

Surviving are husband, Odell Kinney; daughter, Susan K. Mills of Wilmington; sister, Willie Lou Perry of Durham; two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Steven M. Smith
CLIMAX - Steven Michael Smith, 55, of 4704 Stan Road, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Duke Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairview Cemetery in Liberty.

He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post 81 and self-employed as an assembler.

Surviving are parents, Lon T. and Irene G. Smith of Liberty; wife, Marjorie Ann Smith, of the home; daughters, Pamela Michele Smith and Valerie A. Smith, both of the home; sister, Kathy E. Smith of Liberty; brother, Eddy Smith of Liberty.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday; other times at the home.

Joni L. Allcock
ASHEBORO - Joni Irene Link Allcock, 46, of 2788 Buffalo Ford Road, Lot 3, Asheboro, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

A private service will be held.

She was a native of Binghamton, N.Y., and an employee of Wal-Mart.

Surviving are husband, Vern Jarvis Allcock; daughters, Nicole Marie Wright and Sally Irene Allcock, both of Asheboro, Michelle Ida Allcock of Greensboro; son, Vern Thomas Allcock of Butner; mother, Sally Irene Diefendorf of Apalachin, N.Y.; brothers, Stephen Link of Johnson City, N.Y., Norman Link of Maine, N.Y., Jamie Link of Endicott, N.Y.; sister, Julie Houston of Endicott, N.Y.; three grandchildren.

The family will be at the home.

ASHEBORO - Hazel Atkinson Brewster, 82, of 2925 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Danny Jarrell and the Rev. Duke Thurston officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Anderson, S.C.

She was a native of Wake County, of the Baptist faith and a former employee of Jewel Cotton Mill, Thomasville.

Surviving are daughters, Dorothy Teague of Asheboro, Jamie Joyce of Bassett, Va.; sister, Bertie Clack of Alamogordo, N.M.; stepdaughters, Jacqueline Deweese of Thomasville, Barbara Burton of Kent, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home in Asheboro one hour prior to the service Saturday.

John W. Pierce
ASHEBORO - John Winfred Pierce, 80, of 757 Spencer Meadow Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Tommy R. Kidd Sr. and the Rev. David Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and he attended school in Sanford and at Asheboro High School. He retired from Bobby Vincent Construction Co. of Greensboro and formerly worked for Weaver Construction, Greensboro.

Surviving are daughter, Linda P. Bristow of Asheboro; sons, John Wayne Pierce and Arthur Eugene Pierce, both of Asheboro, Brantley Lee Pierce of Sanford, Fla.; brother, William "Bub" Gordon Pierce of Sophia; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Swannie J. Lineberry
CLIMAX - Swannie Jane Jones Lineberry, 91, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Gray's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. John Harmon officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, a retired employee of Hancock Ham and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are son, Larry Shelton Lineberry of Silk Hope; daughters, Louise Bobo of Climax, Rita Jones of Franklinville; sisters, Lucille Redding of McLeansville, Dorothy Rietzel of Pleasant Garden; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

EAGLE SPRINGS - James Russell Little, 60, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Candor, with the Rev. C.L. Wall officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Candor.

Surviving are wife, Lessie G. Little of Aberdeen; son, Russell Goldston of Cameron; daughters, Ethel Ross, Beverly Little, Fonda Little, all of Pinebluff, Vaness Goldston of Hoffman, Tara Little of Southern Pines; stepdaughters, Mary Cagle of Taylortown, Sharon Goldston of Marston; brothers, William E. Little and Roscoe Little, both of Candor, Charles Little and Eddie R. Little, both of the home; 23 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

TROY - Rosa "Rose" Lanier Hicks, 85, of 150 Hurley Dairy Road, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Glenn Hancock officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving is son, Randy Hicks of Troy.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Clyde Burroughs Jr.
MT. GILEAD - Clyde Burroughs Jr., 81, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at his home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sharon Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary Long and the Rev. Bill Carmine officiating and military rites by VFW Post 10940, Mt. Gilead.

He was a native of Stanly County, a retired employee of Gilead Manufacturing, a member of Pee Dee Presbyterian Church and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Mozelle Smith Burroughs; son, Kevin Burroughs of Mt. Gilead; daughter, Karen B. Lowder of Richfield; brothers, James Burroughs of Asheboro, Howard Burroughs and Eugene Burroughs, both of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Doris Covington and Edna King, both of Mt. Gilead; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Dorothy D. Whitley
PINEHURST - Dorothy Kay Duncan Whitley, 67, of 140 Windmere Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at HCR Manor Care.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City, with Pat Duncan officiating.

She was a graduate of Silk Hope High School, a children's photographer for J.C. Penney Co. Inc. and a homemaker.

Surviving are brother, Michael Duncan of Southern Pines; sister, Patsy D. Forster of Rancho Mirage, Calif.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

James L. Cole
NEWLAND - James Leo Cole of Lake View Road, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at his home.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Newland United Methodist Church, with Dr. Louis Woodard officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of High Point University, retired from Acme-McCrary Corp., Asheboro, after 28 years as a sales representative and he attended Newland United Methodist Church.

Surviving are wife, Rose Marie Holden Cole of the home; sons, James Leo Cole Jr. of Fort Mill, S.C., Charles Holden "Chuck" Cole of Charlotte; daughter, Elizabeth C. "Libby" Costner of Little River, S.C.; sister, Maxine C. Walter of Newland; brother, Thomas Frank Cole of Graham; three grandchildren.

The family will be at the church immediately following the services.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Newland, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth R. Flowers
DARLINGTON, S.C. - Ruth Rhodes Flowers, 89, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Indian Branch United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Gardens.

She was a native of Darlington County, the widow of Wade Flowers, a housewife and a former member of Lake Swamp Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, C.W. Flowers of Darlington, S.C.; daughters, Ozelma Maness of Asheboro, Althea F. Cashwell and Thalia "Faye" F. Stephens, both of Darlington, S.C., Felmet F. Wyatt of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Belk Funeral Home, Darlington, S.C., 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

Dr. John L. Cochran Jr.
ASHEBORO - Dr. John Leach Cochran Jr., 84, of 919 Parkview St., Asheboro, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Michael Holder and the Rev. Martha Welch officiating. A private burial will be held.

Dr. Cochran was a native of Montgomery County and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a submarine officer and commissioned three submarines. He was a graduate of Bowman Gray School of Medicine and served his residency at Chelsea Naval Hospital in Boston, Mass., and at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte. He practiced obstetrics/pediatrics in Asheboro and was a former chief of staff of Randolph Hospital. After retiring from active practice in 1985, he worked at the Randolph County Public Health Department. He served as a board chairman and Sunday school teacher at his church. He was the first chairman of the Asheboro Housing Authority, a Salvation Army board member and a member of Lakewood Club.

Surviving are wife June Harris Cochran of the home; daughters, Suzanne Olley of Boise, Idaho, and Beth Walker of Asheboro; brother, Ed Cochran of Hendersonville; sisters, Mary Smitherman of Fayetteville and Jane Fox of Burlington; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

A reception will be held following the funeral service in the church fellowship hall.

BISCOE - Bernard Dallas Burroughs, 83, of 988 Cedar Creek Road, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at his home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Candor Cemetery.

He was a former resident of Greensboro and a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a retired railroad engineer with the Southern Railroad.

Surviving are wife, Lessie Davis Burroughs of Greensboro; sons, David Scott Burroughs of North Carolina, Gary Wayne Burroughs of Winston-Salem, Mark Burroughs of Kernersville and Allan Burroughs of Danville, Va.; sisters, Irene Kendrick of Ocala, Fla., and Donnie Newman of Biscoe, with whom he lived.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Madie W. Maness
CARTHAGE - Madie Williams Maness, 83, of 204 Mt. Carmel Road, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Autumn Care of Biscoe.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Asbury Baptist Church with the Rev. Clay Davis and the Rev. Maurice Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She was a Moore County native, a homemaker and the widow of Rev. Bennie Maness.

Surviving are son, Bobby Maness of Bennett; daughter, Vernell Maness of Robbins; sisters, Ommer Chrisco of Seagrove, Hazel Collins of Rockingham, Evelyn Brady of Bennett and Elgie Underwood of Robbins; brother, Lendon Williams of Robbins; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Sunday; other times at the home.

Faye S. Maness
WHISPERING PINES - Faye Staley Maness, 93, of 7389 N.C. 22, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at her home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Culdee Presbyterian Church cemetery with the Rev. Chris Bobo officiating.

She was a Moore County native and the widow of Garner Maness.

Surviving are foster daughters, Penny Craver of Wilmington and Billie Sellers of Huntersville; sister, Nellie Gibson of Concord and Mattie Jackson of Asheboro; brother, H.J. Staley of Ocala, Fla.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday; other times at the home.

Canary S. Graves
ASHEBORO - Canary Scott Graves, 88, of 957 Straight St., Asheboro, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Asheboro First Wesleyan Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. A.J. Kendrick and the Rev. Mark C. Beane officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a Randolph County native and the last surviving charter member of her church. She was a homemaker and a member of the Dogwood Garden Club.

Surviving are husband, D. Clyde Graves of the home; son, Randolph S. Graves of Asheboro; daughter, Martha G. Whatley of Asheboro; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Monday.

Lois H. McCracken
RANDLEMAN - Julia Lois Harrison McCracken, 77, of 3830 N. Main St., High Point, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Old Union United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Keith Auman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a Randolph County native and had worked for 25 years with Guil-Rand Veterinary Hospital of High Point.

Surviving is sister, Nellie H. Johnson of Sophia.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 7-8:30 p.m. Monday; other times at the home of her sister at 6574 U.S. 311, Sophia.

Ronald G. Cagle
SEAGROVE - Ronald G. Cagle, 63, of 483 Brewer Road, died Sunday, Oct., 19, 2003, at his residence.

A private service will be held at a later date.

He was a Moore County native and retired from Randolph Electric, having worked on a right-of-way crew.

Surviving are wife, Mary Elizabeth Ward Cagle of the home; daughter, Stacey C. Kinney of Asheboro; sisters, Lula C. Davis of Star, Mitchel C. Dunn of Star, and Betty C. Chriscoe of Seagrove.

The family will be at the residence all day Tuesday.
