ASHEBORO - Maxine Ruth Vadnais Hettinger, 78, of 315 Independence Drive, Asheboro, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Pastor C.H. Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Weymouth Cemetery, Medina, Ohio.
She was a native of Medina, Ohio, a homemaker and a member of Fellowship of Jesus Christ Church.

ASHEBORO - Donald Jerry Phillips Sr., 68, of 821B Windermere Court, Asheboro, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Neighbor's Grove Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Larry Moore officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
He was a native of Maiden, former owner and operator of Phillips Business Forms & Home Mart Realty & Construction, Inc., attended Neighbor's Grove Wesleyan Church and in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

She was a native of Loudon County, Tenn., the widow of Colon Jackson Evans, a retired employee of General Electric and a member of Archdale Baptist Church.
Surviving are son, Kenneth "Tex" Evans of Randleman; daughters, Dianne Wilmoth of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Judith C. GREENSBORO - James "Jack" Mahala Baucom, 76, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Father Lutheran Church, where he was a member.
He was a native of Guilford County, a photographer with Channel 2 WFMY TV, a retired crime scene investigator with the Greensboro Police Department after 18 years and a member of the first Police Department Reserves in Greensboro.
Surviving are wife, Rose Baucom of the home; sons, Steven Baucom of Pleasant Garden, Rick Baucom of Greensboro; daughter, Dottie B. Overman of Greensboro; two grandchildren.
The family will be at the church 7-8:30 p.m. Monday.

He was a native of Bladen County, retired from the Belhaven Police Department and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War era.

RANDLEMAN - Gregg Anthony Barefoot, 18, of 2465 Spero Road, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Tommy Kidd and the Rev. Gilbert Presnell officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.
He was a 2003 graduate of Randleman High School and an employee with Food Lion on Dixie Drive in Asheboro.
Surviving are parents, Gary Alton and Becky Wood Barefoot of the home; brother, Christopher Alan Barefoot of the home; grandparents, Grace Wood and Hubert and Colene Barefoot, all of Benson.

Raymond L. Perry
TROY - Raymond Lowell Perry was born Feb. 26, 1939, and died Nov. 23, 2003.
He was a 1957 graduate of Troy High School and a 1961 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he joined Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He was an Eagle Scout of Troop 81 in Troy. He served in the Army Reserves from 1961-1967. For 21 years he owned and operated Perry Furniture Company in Troy. Later, he worked in textiles in Albemarle until he retired to develop a business from his beekeeping hobby. He developed Uwharrie Mountain Honey Company and produced numerous products from the hive. He was a member of Stanly County Beekeepers and the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association where he served as a State Director, and he was a member of the North Carolina Zoo Committee. He earned the Master Craftsman in Beekeeping from North Carolina State University in March, 2003.
Lowell was a member of First Baptist Church of Troy and the Genesis Bible Study Class. He was a member of the Albemarle Lions Club and he served his community as president of the River Haven Association.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Priscilla G. Perry of the home; a daughter, Holli P. Britt; a granddaughter, Jessica Lauren Britt; a son-in-law, Jason L. Britt, all of Fayetteville; his mother, Enid M. Perry of Troy; a sister, Janno P. Daniel of Troy.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Troy at 6 p.m. on Nov. 26. The family requests no flowers, but memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Troy, 401 E. Hazel F. Hamlin
QUINCY, Wash. - Hazel Flint Hamlin, 89, of Quincy, Wash., died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in Quincy Valley Hospital.
A graveside service will be in Randolph Memorial Park on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m.
Hazel was raised in Scottsbluff County, Neb. She moved to Washington, D.C., in 1937 and in 1940, received a permanent appointment with the Civil Service in the Maritime Commission, which was the war shipping administration during World War II. She received a War Service Certificate for her service to the Nation. Hazel retired in 1969 as Chief Clerk, International Office, Research and Development, Department of the Army.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Allred Hamlin, a native of Randolph County.
She is survived by a sister, Ellen Flint of Lake Park, Fla.; brothers, David Flint of Quincy, Wash., Dennis Flint of Placerville, Calif., and E.B. Flint of Sacramento, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Free Methodist Church in Quincy, Wash., at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20.

ASHEBORO - Kathleen Faye Mitchell Stevens, 73, formerly of 153 E. Academy St., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Jonathan Shook officiating.
She was a native of Trinidad, West Indies, the widow of Arthur Warren Stevens Sr., a member of Bailey's Grove Baptist Church and a retired nursing assistant.

NORWOOD - Elmon Shelton Russell, 72, of Carolina House of Asheboro, formerly of Norwood, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Memorial Baptist Church, Norwood, with the Rev. Nathan Fox officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.
He was a native of Stanly County, the widower of Mary Skidmore Russell, a graduate of Albemarle High School, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a graduate of Appalachian State University with a Masters. He was a retired teacher and chairman of the Department of Business at Southern Piedmont Community College, a former business manager with Concord Telephone and he attended Memorial Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict era and former chairman of the Stanly County Community Concert Association.
The family will be at the church 9:45-10:45 a.m. Friday, prior to the service.

Mr. Smith was a native of Randolph County and retired from Acme-McCrary Corporation after 38 years of service. He was a member of Balfour Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his daughter, Caroline Smith Jones.
He is survived by wife, Carol Cox Smith; son-in-law, Larry W. Jones of Taylorsville; granddaughter, Larissa Erkman of Taylorsville; grandsons, Todd W. Jones of Taylorsville and Brian Kent Jones of Raleigh; great-granddaughter, Caroline Quinn Erkman of Taylorsville; great-grandson, John Theodore Erkman of Taylorsville; sisters, Opal Frye of High Point, Mary Lou Thomas of Albemarle, Rosa Lee Mobley of Vero Beach, Fla., and Myrtie Younts of Lexington.
