Neal L. Morris Jr.
DENTON - Neal Larry Morris Jr., 39, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Vern Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County, a member of Oakview Baptist Church, High Point, and a 1988 graduate of Elon University, where he played varsity football. He taught at Northwest Guilford High School, T. Wingate Andrews High School and currently was employed by Forsyth County Schools as director of the Alternative School at R.J. Reynolds High School. While at Andrews High School, he was a weight trainer, assistant football coach and head coach for indoor and outdoor track and named "conference Coach of the Year" each year he was there. He was a recipient of the 2001 Girls Track and Field Coach Award for North Carolina from the National Federation of Coaches Association and the 2001 Track and Field Coach Award by the National High School Coaches Association.

Surviving are son, Hayden Alexander Morris of High Point; parents, Neal Larry "Tuck" Morris Sr. and Imogene Walker Morris of the home; brother, Mark Morris of Hilton Head, S.C.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Henry D. Jones
SILER CITY - Henry Deward Jones, 88, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Loves Creek Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Roy Helms officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, the widower of Lucille Gibson Jones and a World War II U.S. Army veteran where he received the Purple Heart.

Surviving are sons, Jimmy S. Jones of Pleasant Garden, Larry D. Jones of Greensboro; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

TROY - Loy Winbern Dennis, 81, of 4461 N.C. 109 North, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Uwharrie United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Glenn Hancock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving is wife, Agnes Dennis of the home.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

EAGLE SPRINGS - Shirley Mae Campbell, 54, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Creek Grove Christian Pentecostal Holiness Church, with Bishop George McKoy officiating. Burial will be in Love Grove Cemetery, West End.

Surviving are sisters, Sarah Campbell, Deliah A. Campbell, Sandra Ingram, Betty Kimbrew, all of Eagle Springs, Frances Leslie of Aberdeen; brothers, Jimmy Lee Campbell of Carthage, Bobby Lee Campbell of Cameron, Hayes A. Campbell of Eagle Springs, Charles E. Campbell of Charlotte.

Edna T. Stone
ASHEBORO - Edna Carol Taylor Stone, 90, of 919 Redding Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at North Pointe Assisted Living in Asheboro.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 at the Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Asheboro, with the Rev. Russ Ward officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park.

A native of Alleghany County, Mrs. Stone was born March 11, 1913, to the late Edward and Myrtle Osborne Taylor. She was the retired former co-owner of Stone Shoe Company, with her late husband, Bill Stone. She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1951 where she was a Sunday school teacher for preschoolers. She was an avid golfer and played in many tournaments over 50 years. She was also a member of the Dogwood Garden Club.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Lou Stone Greer and husband, Charles Greer IV, of Hattiesburg, Miss., Billie Sue Stone Vuncannon and husband, Tony Vuncannon of Asheboro; stepdaughter, Sally Blevins of Lansing; grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Greer Miller, Charles Edward Greer V, Susan Antonette Vuncannon, Ra-nette Carol Vuncannon Rodden; great-grandchild, Hannah Marie Rodden.

The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 5, from 12:30 until 2 p.m., and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Center of Living Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, N.C. 27204.

Barbara M. Sheppard
SALISBURY - Barbara Jean Maness Sheppard, 58, died Friday, November 28, 2003, at the Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

She was born Feb. 6, 1945, in Siler City, a daughter to Wiley Russell Maness and Swannie Wallace Maness. Mrs. Sheppard was the widow of Dr. Charles A. Sheppard.

She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Mrs. Sheppard was a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party. She currently served as Second Vice Chair of the Chatham County Democratic Party and the Board of Directors for the Piedmont Conservation Council.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Catherine Sheppard of the home and companion, Albert M. Everhart Jr. of Richfield.

The family will have a private memorial service at the home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., Suite 211, Charlotte, N.C. 28202.

Evergreen Cremation Services of Salisbury is in charge.

Mertis M. Headen
ASHEBORO - Swanna Mertis Maness Headen, 91, formerly of 226 Tremont Drive, Asheboro, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Roland Cavanaugh and Pastor Tommy E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery, Ramseur.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Isaac Hubert Headen and a homemaker. She attended Ramseur Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are son, Hubert Elmer Headen of Asheboro; brother, Thomas Curtis Maness of Raleigh.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday.

ASHEBORO - Olivia Jones Sykes, 91, of 728 Holly St., Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Michael Holder and the Rev. Martha Welch officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Vance V. Sykes, a retired employee of B.C. Moore and a member of the Blanche McGlohon Sunday School class at her church.

Surviving are daughter, Joan Akers of Asheboro; son, Tommy Sykes of Sophia; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of her daughter, 337 S. Park St., Asheboro.

Frank T. Yarborough
STAR - Frank Thomas Yarborough, 73, of Popular Springs Rest Home, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Long Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Candor, with the Rev. Larry Beaver, the Rev. Joe Beane and the Rev. Hubert McLeod officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, other times at 1858 Pekin Road, Candor.

S. Sherrill Ballard
ROBBINS - Stephen Sherrill Ballard, 85, of 150 S. Front St., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, in Manor Care, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Monty Brown officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, the widower of Ruth Spinks Ballard, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a retired employee of Milliken Co.

Surviving are son, S. Jerry Ballard of Reidsville; daughter, Brenda B. Moser of Laurinburg; three grandchildren.

The family be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Curtis B. Haithcock
MT. GILEAD - Curtis Bernard Haithcock, 78, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Graveside service with military honors by the U.S. Navy will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sharon Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Mabry officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a retired employee of Gerber Mfg., Greensboro, a member of Hamer Creek Baptist Church and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are wife, Mozelle Richardson Haithcock; sons, Gary Haithcock of Apex, Clark Haithcock of Sanford; daughter, Hilda Haithcock of Winston-Salem; brothers, Marshall Haithcock and Robert Haithcock, both of Mt. Gilead; sister, Avis Lefler of Mt. Gilead; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Floyd R. Lindsey Sr.
MT. GILEAD - Floyd Roderick Lindsey Sr., 69, of 3248 N.C. 24/27 West, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with Dr. Bruce Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Biscoe Cemetery, Biscoe.

He was a native of Susquehanna County, Pa., and a licensed auctioneer.

Surviving are wife, Agnes Lindsey of the home; sons, Floyd Lindsey Jr. of Chester, S.C., Terry Lindsey of Iron Station; daughters, Sara Decker, Connie Stroud, Shelia Purvis, all of Mt. Gilead, Dotye Bronson of Biscoe; sister, Dorothy Titus of Hallstead, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

John D. Caviness
NORMAN - John Daniel "JD" Caviness, 77, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Richmond Memorial Hospital, Rockingham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Freewill Baptist Church, Ellerbe, with Dr. B.M. Harris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are daughters, Phyliss Caviness of Ellerbe, Barbara Dumas of Greensboro, Pauline Mayhue of Jackson Springs; son, John D. Caviness Jr. of Greensboro; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Bostic Funeral Services, Candor, 7-8 p.m. Friday.

Johnny T. Shelton
ELLERBE - Johnny Thomas Shelton, 70, of 365 Crawford Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, Rockingham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant United Meth-odist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Donald Daniel and the Rev. Denny Glennon officiating. Burial will be in Ellerbe Cemetery.

He was a native of Richmond County, a U.S. Army veteran, a carpenter and in the poultry business.

Surviving are wife, Sally Bet Brigman Shelton of the home; brother, Doyle Shelton of Pleasant Garden; sisters, Joan Britt of Biscoe, Linda Mabe of Candor.

The family will be at the church 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Frances W. Hancock
GREENSBORO - Frances Gunter Watson Hancock, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Moses Cone Extended Care.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm Chapel, with Mrs. Hancock's grandson, the Rev. Phillip Faig, officiating.

She was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Randolph County, the youngest of eight children of Snodia Brown Gunter and John L. Gunter. She was a graduate of Franklinville High School and a retired telephone operator with Southern Bell.

She raised two daughters, Eleanor Watson Wyrick and Susan Watson Dorn, under very challenging circumstances, often juggling several jobs simultaneously. Her example of doing whatever was needed, without any fanfare or expectations or acknowledgment, has been a hallmark of her life. Other family members include her sons-in-law, Donnell Wyrick and Robert Dorn; daughter-in-law, Sandy Hancock; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and beloved nieces and nephews.

She used her telephone to stay in touch with many friends throughout her long illness, remaining vibrantly interested in politics and Atlanta Braves baseball. She also telephoned an elderly shut-in every day for 23 years until the day she died. As her illness progressed, she adapted to steadily decreasing degrees of freedom with far more grace than might have been expected of this highly independent woman. She was grateful to her caregivers at Moses Cone Extended Care Center, especially Erica, Sharon, Terry, Janet, Becky, Mavis, Diane, Misty, Carmelia, and to her special helper, Michelle Miller.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Jewel Hill
ASHEBORO - Lena "Jewel" Hill, 83, of 5598 Hill Hardister Road, Troy, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Huldah Baptist Church, with the Rev. D.C. Sullivan and the Rev. Claudie Harrison officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a retired employee of Jockey International after 30 years. She attended Mountain of Faith Christian Church.

Surviving are husband, Frank Hill; sons, John F. "Johnny" Hill of Asheboro, Donald R. "Donnie" Hill of Troy; daughters, Frances Williams of Troy, Margaret Davis and Mary Lois Hill, both of Asheboro; sisters, Carrie Vuncannon, Emma Jane Callicutt and Elbie Bullins, all of Asheboro; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Johnny Hill, 576 Hoover Hill Road, Asheboro.

David L. Price
ASHEBORO - David Lee Price, 68, of 2300 Howell Road, Midland, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at the home of his sister.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at C.C. Hodges Funeral Service, Asheboro, with the Rev. Dean Staley officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvery Cemetery, Asheboro.

He was a native of Union County and a retired employee of the Washington Navy Shipyard in Washington, D.C.

Surviving are daughter, Shirley Y. Price of Washington, D.C.; sons, David L. Price of Hamilton, Ohio, Bruce Price of Kings William, Va., Wilson T. Price of Richmond, Va.; sister, Margie Moser of Midland; brother, Pain Price of Midland; eight grandchildren.

Julia Z. Haithcock
TROY - Julia Zachary Haithcock, 87, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wadeville United Methodist Church, Mt. Gilead, where she was a member, with the Rev. Glenn Hancock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a retired employee of United Mills.

Surviving are husband, Dossie W. Haithcock of the home; brother, James Zachary of Mt. Gilead; sister, Mrs. Ben Ballard of Mt. Gilead.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Joe B. Ashburn
DENTON - Joe Bill Ashburn, 63, of Salem Street, Thomasville, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Terry Cruse officiating. Burial will be in Tom's Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Surry County, a carpenter and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are son, Gary Joe Ashburn of Thomasville; daughters, Kathy Smith of Lexington, Bonnie Mahan of Trinity, Connie Chrystal of Thomasville; brothers, Jimmy Ashburn of Greensboro, Yvonne Ashburn of King; sisters, Elaine Ashburn of High Point, Norma Jean Kinley and Judy Davidson, both of Trinity; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Kathy Smith, 845 Becks Nursery Road, Lexington.
