Funeral service is 2 p.m. Sunday at Victory Baptist Church of Seagrove with the Rev. Tim Rogers officiating. Burial will be at Suggs Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was a Montgomery County native and the widow of Jeffrey McNeill. She was a seamstress and had worked at several textiles mills in Randolph County.
Surviving are sons, J.C. McNeill and Eugene McNeill, both of Randleman, Ronnie McNeill of Asheboro, Donnie McNeill of Seagrove; daughters, Brenda Kennedy of Biscoe, Linda Warner of Fayetteville, Karen Yates of Denton, Sharon Hunt of Asheboro; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lena Singleton and Louise Hancock, both of Star, Betty Routh of Franklinville, Ollie Watts of Sophia; brothers, Floyd Cagle of Denton and Roy Cagle of Elizabeth City.
The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Saturday; other times at the home.

Mable J. Matthews
CARTHAGE - Mable Johnson Matthews, 92, of Vass-Carthage Road, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at her home.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. Sunday at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She was a Yadkin County native and worked as a private duty nurse at St. Joseph Hospital for 10 years. She was the widow of Herman Matthews.
Surviving are daughter, Doris Elizabeth Ragsdale of Asheboro; sons, Gordon Lee Matthews of Pinebluff, Darrell Ray Matthews of Carthage; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Catherine Harrell Thomas, 89, of Florida Avenue, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, in a Portsmouth Hospital.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday in Olive Branch cemetery with the Rev. Terry Taylor officiating.
She was a native of Edenton, a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church and a graduate of Norfolk General School of Nursing. She retired as a registered nurse.
Surviving are husband, Lewis Thomas; daughter, Catherine T. Titus of California; sons, John Lewis Thomas III of Chesapeake, Va., William H. Thomas of Asheboro; five grandchildren.
The family will be at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard, Portsmouth, Va., 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday.

John L. Arrington II
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Capt. John L. Arrington II, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003.
Memorial service is Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Spartanburg, with son-in-law, Rev. Larry Emerson, co-officiating. A private memorial service will be held in Boothbay, Maine.
He was a native of Rocky Mount and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned Ensign, USN. He served during World War II in the North Atlantic, the South Pacific and in Japanese waters on destroyers. After retiring from the Navy he was employed by PPG Industries, Inc. from where he retired. He was a Rotarian and a life member of the Retired Officer Association.
Surviving are wife, Jean S. Arrington; daughter, Lindsay Arrington of Asheboro; son, Christopher Arrington of Hamilton, Va.; two grandchildren; stepdaughters, Roberta Perry of Orange Park, Fla., Michelle Blocker of Santee, Calif.; stepson, John L. Boyer of San Pedro, Calif.

WASHINGTON - Minnie Ruth Ross Mills, age 91, a resident of 2948 Harvey Road, Washington, N.C., died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at the Beaufort County Hospital.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington.
She is survived by a daughter, Margie Phelps Trogdon of Asheboro; two granddaughters, Rebecca Phelps Melberger and Karen Ann Smith of Asheboro; and one great-grandson, Jaylen Rodgers also of Asheboro.

RAMSEUR - Darlinda Flick Brown, 55, of 175 Elizabeth St., died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.

She was a native of Glens Falls, N.Y., and an employee of Wal-Mart in Siler City, where she was manager of the photo lab.

RAMSEUR - Charles John Durbin, 65, of 4691 Roundleaf Road, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at his home.

He was a native of Auburn, N.Y., and was retired from Easter Seals.

John L. Arrington II
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Capt. John L. Arrington II went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003.
He was born in Rocky Mount, N.C., on July 28, 1917, the son of C.H. Arrington and Annie B. Arrington of that city. Captain Arrington graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1939 and was commissioned Ensign, USN. During his 27 years of commissioned service he served on all major type combat vessels. During World War II he served on destroyers in the North Atlantic, the South Pacific and in Japanese waters at the end of the war. After the war he attended several schools, earning a master's degree, he served on carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and shore command at Dam Neck, Va. His last sea command was on the USS Wright (CCS).
After retiring from active duty in 1966 he was employed by PPG Industries, Inc. as Manager Processor Computers at their plants in Shelby and Lexington, N.C. After retiring from PPG, he moved to Florida, living there until moving to Spartanburg, S.C., in 1998.
He is survived by his widow, Jean S.; a daughter, Lindsay, of Asheboro; a son, Christopher of Hamilton, Va.; and two grandchildren, Stephanie M. Arrington and William T. Arrington; three stepchildren, Roberta Perry of Orange Park, Fla., Michelle Blocker of Santee, Calif., and John L. Boyer of San Pedro, Calif. He was predeceased by his brother, C.H. Arrington of Wilmington, Del.
He was a Rotarian, a life member of the Retired Officer Association. As time permitted he spent summers in Boothbay, Maine, where he had a summer home on Sheepscot River.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. in St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 101 St. Matthews Lane, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301; no flowers please. A private memorial service will be held in Boothbay, Maine. Son-in-law, the Rev. Larry Emerson will be co-officiating the service. In lieu of flowers, make contributions to the Rotary Club International and St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Spartanburg, S.C.

LIBERTY - Randall Reid "Randy" York-Boggs, 45, of 4635 Boggs Trail, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was a Chatham County native.

Cleo C. Haywood
CANDOR - Cleo Chason Haywood, 97, of North Main Street, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at her home.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Candor United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. William Mitchell and the Rev. William Turnmire officiating. Burial will be in the Candor Town Cemetery.
She was a Robeson County native but had been a resident of Candor for over 70 years and had been a long time member of Candor Baptist Church. She attended Meredith College and Wake Forest College (now Wake Forest University). She was a retired school teacher, having taught most of her 41 years in Montgomery County. She was a member of the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #111. She was the widow of Wilbur Floyd Haywood.
Surviving are daughters, Janice Haywood of Candor, Phyllis Lambert of Robbins, Martha Hanford of Lexington Park, Md.; sisters, Charlene Britt of Raeford, Vernon Ledford of Jacksonville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

She was a Randolph County native and retired from Burlington Industries. She was a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class at her church.

She was a Moore County native and had worked at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital as a lab technician. She was the widow of Arthur Lawhon.
Surviving are sons, David Lawhon of Wilmington, Robert Lawhon of Carthage, Charles Law-hon of Pinehurst; brother, Bruce Donaldson of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; five grandchildren.

TABOR CITY - Gladys Hope Stout, 76, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at Pinedale Residential Care, Tabor City.
Graveside service is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Myrtle Green Cemetery, with the Rev. Brent Livingood officiating.
She was a native of Washington, D.C.
Surviving are brothers, William A. Stout of Tabor City, James C. Stout of Asheboro.

Paul J. Purvis
GREENSBORO - Mr. Paul June Purvis, 77, of 122 Eisenhower Ave., went home to be with his Lord on Dec. 14, 2003, at Beacon Place.
Funeral arrangements for Mr. Purvis will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, North Elm Chapel, Greensboro. Interment will follow at Bennett Baptist Church in Bennett, N.C.
He was a native of Chatham County. Mr. Purvis was employed by Dodson Exterminating Company. He was a member of South Elm Street Baptist Church.
Paul was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather, who also had many friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his loving family and wife, Devonia Lewis Purvis of the home; one son, John Andrew Purvis of Las Vegas, Nev., and one daughter, Paula Purvis Wall, and her husband, David Lee Wall of Liberty; and one grandson, David Bradley Wall.
