ASHEBORO - Thomas Clark Butterfield, 71, of 2000 McPherson St., Lot 3, Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a retired employee of Arrow International.

Surviving are wife, Phyllis Brewer Butterfield; sons, Michael Butterfield of St. Augustine, Fla., Timothy Clark Butterfield of Asheboro; daughter, Tammy Boutell of Asheboro; sister, Gracie Lauro of Sayville, Long Island, N.Y.; three grandchildren.

TRINITY - Enolia Russell Hester, 85, of Britthaven of Davidson, Thomasville, and formerly of Denton, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Britthaven of Davidson.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Hills Wesleyan Church, High Point, where she was a member, with the Rev. Bruce Hopper and the Rev. Melvin Gentry officiating. Burial will be in Lineberry United Methodist Church Cemetery, Denton.

She was a native of Montgomery County, the widow of W. "Buck" Hester and a beautician at the Sheraton Beauty Shop in High Point. She was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class at her church, a graduate of Jamestown High School and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are sons, Ray Hester of Lexington, Lee Hester of Denton; daughters, Pat Hester of Trinity, Brenda Butler of LaPlace, La., Becky Tuttle of Trinity; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8 p.m. Monday.

RAMSEUR - Grace Ward, 74, of 1364 Salisbury St., died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at SunBridge Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Garry Arnett and the Rev. Richard Wright officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving are brothers, Blaine Ward of Asheboro, Paul Ward of Siler City; sisters, Louise W. Bowden and Rachel W. Parks, both of Asheboro, Maxine W. Brady of Siler City.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday.

SEAGROVE - L. Tyler Darnell, 22, of Busbee Road, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident in Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church, Whispering Pines, with the Rev. Steve Johnson and the Rev. Eugene Ussery officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a student at Randolph Community College, Asheboro.

Surviving are father and stepmother, Jerry Darnell and Pam Marion Darnell of the home; mother and stepfather, Sandra Fulcher Shufford and Randy Shufford of Sunset Beach; stepbrothers, Butch Bennett of Carthage, Justin Bennett of Ft. Bragg; stepsisters, Michelle Bennett of Pinehurst, Sherri Bennett of Carthage; grandparents, Pearl Darnell Parker of Southern Pines, Kenneth and Lula Fulcher of West End.

Mary O. Needham
SEAGROVE - Mary Odom Needham, 73, of 3176 U.S. 220 North, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Crossroads Community Church, with Pastor David Bibey officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a retired textile worker and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Arthur "A.C." Carl Needham Sr. of Seagrove; daughter, Annette Davis of Seagrove; son, Carl Needham of Randleman; sisters, Wilma Comer of Seagrove, Alameta Bennett of Pilot Mountain; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Gloria A. Cranford
LEXINGTON - Gloria Anderson Cranford, age 80, of 420 Maegeo Drive, Lexington, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Lexington Health Care Center, Lexington.

Mrs. Cranford was born July 30, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Harry Vernon and Clara Saunders Anderson and was raised in Asheboro. She was a 1940 graduate of Asheboro High School and a 1944 graduate of Meredith College with an AB in History. She was a member of the Junior League in Chapel Hill. Mrs. Cranford was a founding member of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Chapel Hill, where she also served for a time as organist. She was active for many years in the First United Methodist Church, Lexington, where she was chairman of the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Club of the Twelve, Lexington, and a member for many years of the Lexington Music Study Club. She was the widow of Dr. Harold Davis Cranford.

She is survived by one son, Harold Vernon Cranford of Lexington; sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry V. Anderson Jr. of Lexington; four nieces; six great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Dec. 29, from 7-9 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, with the Rev. John Ferree officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro.

Robert E. Joyce
BURLINGTON - Robert Edward Joyce, 67, of 2615 Caprice Lane, Burlington, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, in Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Brush Creek Baptist Church, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek, with the Rev. Patrick Fuller and the Rev. Daniel Gregory officiating. Burial will be in Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek.

Mr. Joyce was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Staley Baptist Church and Solid Rock Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Alamance. He was a diesel mechanic with Burlington Industries Transportation, Burlington, for 3912 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry O. and Velna Bray Joyce.

Surviving are wife, Rachel Langley Joyce, his bride of 41 years, of the home; mother-in-law, Maxine D. Langley of Staley; niece, Tahia Langley of Staley; sister-in-law, Carole B. Langley of Staley; very special family, Scott, Brandon and Bronson Robertson, Mamie Brannock, and the Scott and Robertson families, all of Burlington.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 N. Second Ave., Siler City, and other times at the home of Maxine D. Langley, 1554 Brown's Cross Road, Staley.

ASHEBORO - Mary Araina Cunningham Boggs, 41, of 2031 Holland St., Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Randolph Memorial Park, with Pastor Sam Harvey officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Michael A. Boggs, a former employee of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are daughters, Ami Boggs and Mollie Gray, both of the home; sons, David Boggs and Eric Boggs, both of the home; brothers, William R. Cunningham of Reidsville, James C. Cunningham of Asheboro, Richard D. Cunningham of Greensboro.

ASHEBORO - James Harold Byrd Sr., 77, of 1024 Bunting Road, Asheboro, and formerly of Calabash, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Minister Robert Tipton officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Mt. Gilead, the widower of Audrey Terry Byrd, a member of Shallote Church of Christ, a former employee of Food Line in Asheboro and a retired employee of Lowes Foods.

Surviving are sons, James H. Byrd Jr. of Kernersville, Donald Byrd of Randleman; daughters, Debi B. Vinson of Baltimore, Md., Cathy McKenzie and Laurie Lundy, both of Asheboro; brothers, Alton Byrd of Palmetto, Fla., Johnny Byrd Sr. of Greensboro, Lenell Byrd of Rockingham; sisters, Elgie Parnell of Albemarle, Jo Ann Blue of Mt. Gilead; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - Johnsie Elizabeth Walker Hinshaw, 88, of Evergreens of Greensboro, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Evergreens of Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Franklinville, with the Rev. John Harmon officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Roby Hinshaw, a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church and a retired employee of Cooks Department Store.

Surviving are daughters, Vonna Hinshaw of Randleman, Carol H. Marek of Liberty; sons, Roby Terry Hinshaw and Darrell Hinshaw, both of Greensboro, Stephen Hinshaw and Thomas Michael Hinshaw, both of Franklinville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchilden.

Ruthie L. Hoskins
ASHEBORO - Ruthie Lee Hoskins, 58, of 1405 Cedar Falls Road, Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gailes Funeral Home, Asheboro.

Surviving are son, William Joey Hoskins of the home; granddaughter, Kyndall Joei Hoskins of the home.

The family will be at the funeral home 10 a.m. Tuesday.

V. Stanton Kennedy
ASHEBORO - Virgil Stanton Kennedy, 86, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Calvary Independent Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Pastor Neil Poole, Pastor Jeff Lambe and Tim Fore officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Hazel Beane Kennedy and a retired minister.

Surviving are daughter, Jeanette K. Adams of Asheboro; sons, David Kennedy of McLeansville, Maurice Kennedy of Asheboro; brother, Robert Kennedy of Morrow, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home of Maurice Kennedy, 612 W. Wainman Ave.

BENNETT - Lillie Phillips Hribal, 97, of Westchester Manor in High Point, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Westchester Manor.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highfalls Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Roger Riffe officiating. Burial will be in Prosperity Friends Cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Frank Hribal and a retired seamstress.

Surviving are brothers, Theodore "Ted" Phillips Sr. of Bennett, the Rev. Dr. Isaac Phillips of High Point; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 6-8 p.m. Monday, other times at the home of Ted Phillips, 216 Phillips Road, Bennett.

Josephine D. Cothran
ASHEBORO - Josephine Ann Dewey Cothran, age 77, of Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Mrs. Cothran was born April 25, 1926, in Hampton, Va., the daughter of the late William Edward and the late Josephine Louise (Weaver) Dewey.

She was a native of Hampton, Va., and a member of Central United Methodist Church. She was retired as a Registered Nurse from Randolph Hospital and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by one son, William Grey Cothran, and her parents, William Edward Dewey and Josephine Louise Weaver. She received her formal education from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing of Cleveland, Ohio, and Bowling Green State University of Bowling Green, Ohio. She was trained in Nursing Administration, Critical Care, Medical-Surgical and Obstetrical Nursing. She was Nursing Quality Assurance Coordinator, Critical Care Coordinator, Head RN ICU, Head RN Medical-Surgical Nursing, all at Randolph Hospital. She was a member of the American Nurses Assoc., the NC Nurses Assoc. where she served on the Board of Directors as well as Past President, the American Assoc. of Critical Nurses (Charter Member Old Salem Chapter), American Heart Assoc. (Council of Cardio-Vascular Nursing). She received the following honors: Federal Grantee, Regional Program, NC Heart Assoc. (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill); Nurse of the Year 1984 (NC Nurses Assoc. District 31). She was certified as a Mobile Intensive Care RN, Basic and Advanced EKG operator and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Asheboro Diabetic Assoc.

She is survived by two daughters, Autumn C. Roberts of Winston-Salem, Diane C. Henry of Greensboro; one grandson, Gregory C. Henry of Greensboro.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, with the Rev. William Christopher Thore officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.

Ruth P. Younts
TRINITY - Ruth Edith Parrish Younts, 86, a resident of 6652 Old U.S. 64 East, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Britthaven of Davidson.

Born on Feb. 5, 1917, in Montgomery County to James Walter and Bessie Elam Parrish, she had made this area her home her entire life. She was a homemaker and a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church. On Sept. 7, 1935, she married Albert Wade Younts who survives her of the home.

Also surviving are one daughter, Jackie Hunt and her husband Crowson of Thomasville; sons, Billy Younts and his wife Virginia of Trinity, and Jerry Younts of Lexington; one sister, Christine Arnold and her husband Frank of Lexington; one brother, Fred Parrish and his wife Rachel of Denton; grandchildren, Mark Younts, Donna Lamar and her husband Mark, Jeffrey Hunt and his wife Gay, and Tammy Younts; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bonnie Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville. Mrs. Younts will remain at the funeral home until being placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Old U.S. 64 East, Trinity, N.C. 27370, in memory of Mrs. Younts.

Chesley E. Yarborough
LIBERTY - Chesley Evans Yarborough, 89, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Apex Cemetery in Apex, with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating.

He was a Cleveland County native and a graduate of North Carolina State University. He was the widower of Effie Hammock Yarborough.

Surviving are daughter, Maxine Yarborough of Liberty; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Lloyd Kidd
GREENSBORO - Lloyd Kidd, 72, of 3914 Madison Avenue, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Wesley Long Hospital.

Funeral service was Sunday, Dec. 28, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home, Greensboro, with the Rev. Butch Sherrill officiating. Burial was in Whites Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery, Franklinville.

He was a Randolph County native and a member of Whites Memorial Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean War, a former motel owner and manager.

Surviving are wife, Kay Kidd of the home; daughters, Cheryl Diane Kidd of Greensboro and Kelly Kidd Cullers of Dubuque, Iowa; son, Kenneth Stewart Kidd of Helsinki, Finland; four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Whites Memorial Baptist Church or to Hospice of the Piedmont.

Dorothy K. Johnson
SELMA - Dorothy Kirkman Johnson, 83, of 3291 Lizzie Mill Road, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at her home.

Graveside service was 2 p.m. Monday at Goldston Cemetery, Goldston, with the Rev. Roy Helms officiating.

She was a Chatham County native, a member of St. John's Baptist Church and the Children's Nursery in Raleigh. She was a graduate of Watt's Nursing School, a homemaker and the wi-dow of Wilbur L. Johnson.

Surviving are son, Carl L. Johnson of Selma; sister, Ruth Smith of Siler City; three grandchildren.

Worth Hardin Jr.
ASHEBORO - William Worth Hardin Jr., 66, of 1031 Freedom Trail, Asheboro, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with the Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park.

Mr. Hardin was a native of Guilford County and served in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of First Baptist Church in Asheboro, president of Mid-State Beagle Club and a member of Carolina Beagle Club. He was formerly employed with Moster & Sons Funeral Service in Rushville, Ind., Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Service in Greensboro and retired from Smurfit-Stone Corporation in Greensboro.

Surviving are wife Martha A. Hardin; son and daughter-in-law, Randall James and Chris Hardin of Greensboro, son and daughter-in-law, Nathan Worth and Barbara Hardin of Summerfield; daughter, Deborah Sue Tilley of Greensboro, daughter and son-in-law Cynthia Annette and Doug Biggs of Greensboro; grandchildren, Stephanie Beeler Rakes, Jared Beeler, Michael Hardin, Tyler Biggs, Ali Biggs, Austin Hardin, Taylor Hardin and Jordan Hardin; brother and sister-in-law Donald H. and Nancy Hardin of Arlington, Ind.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, and other times at his home.

Estelle C. Hackney
ASHEBORO - Mrs. Estelle Councilman Hackney, 88, of Asheboro, died on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Randolph Hospital following a brief illness.

Mrs. Hackney's funeral will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Asheboro, with the Dr. John S. Rogers, the Rev. Charles Bullard and the Rev. Judson Rotan officiating. Entombment will follow in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.

Born on March 31, 1915, in Chatham County, she was the daughter of the late George C. and Clatie R. Phillips Councilman. Mrs. Hackney graduated from Mars Hill College and Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. She received her masters degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, and served as a Baptist missionary in South America. She married the late Rev. James Parks Hackney Sr. in 1949 at the First Baptist Church in Asheboro. She worked with her husband in serving his pastorates in the Richmond, Va., and Washington, D.C., areas. Mrs. Hackney taught in the Fairfax County, Va., school system for over 25 years. Upon retirement, she returned to Asheboro and rejoined First Baptist Church. She remained active in its organizations and other various charities in the Asheboro area.

Mrs. Hackney is survived by her daughter, Martha Gayle Clarke of Asheboro and her husband Bill; her son, James P. Hackney Jr. and his wife Lynn of Siler City; her sister, Edith C. Puckett of Asheboro; brother, Archie Councilman and his wife Helen of Bear Creek, as well as many other devoted family members and friends.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 5-7 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.
