Ocia G. Hurley
HICKORY - Mrs. Ocia Geneva Hurley, 83, of Kernersville, died on Christmas Eve, 2003.
She was born on March 5, 1920, in Randolph County, the daughter of the late Lemual Stedman Loflin and Mary Elizabeth Brookside. She lived in Asheboro for most of her life, employed at Randolph Hospital for 25 years and was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church and Balfour Baptist Church. Upon retirement she moved to the Robinwood Retirement Center where she lived for the last eight years of her life.
Her favorite pastimes were gardening and cross stitching of which she was a master, producing scores of beautiful art works over a 30-year period that will endure for many, many years to come.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Garfield and Arthur and her sisters Ruby and Gertha.
She is survived by her sister, Effie Yow of Kernersville; her two sons, Steve Hurley of Winston-Salem and Gary Hurley of Hickory; four grandchildren, Cara, Cheyenne, Nicolas and Sierra Hurley; nieces, Sandra Cooke and Shirley Saunders; nephews, Larry Yow and Earl Watson; daughters-in-law, Rea and Susan Hurley.
A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Robinwood Retirement Center in Kernersville.
Tarrell Graham Sr.
WEST END - Tarrell B. Graham Sr., 82, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Marcus United Metho-dist Church with the Rev. Don Burns officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Graham was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Moore County to Tonie and Annie Macy Poole Graham. He was a veteran of the Merchant Marines. He was a member of Marcus United Methodist Church and a member of the Alberta Masonic Lodge. He was a volunteer fireman with West End Fire Dept. Mr. Graham was a second generation well drilling contractor and former co-owner of Graham Bros. Well Drilling Co. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ned and Reece Graham and a sister, Antha Maude Lovin.
Surviving are wife, Shelly Ellington Graham, wife of 54 years; sons, Tarrell Benford Graham Jr. and wife Patricia, Daniel Bruton Graham and wife Nancy, all of West End; daughter, Annie Macy Graham McKenzie and husband Danny of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren, Tarrell B. Graham III, Emily Graham, Mary Graham, Elizabeth Graham Garner, Ryan Graham, Heather Graham and Lauren McKenzie; great-grandchildren, Samuel Graham, Chandler Garner and Jillian Garner; sister, Martha Lane Carson of Fayetteville.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor.
The family would like to give special thanks to the doctors and staff at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital during Mr. Graham's sickness.
Eula M. Kivett
LIBERTY - Eula Mae McMasters Kivett, 92, of 1704 Low Bridge Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral service is 11 a.m. Thursday at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Steve Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She was a Randolph County native and a homemaker.
Surviving are sons, Harold Kivett, Wayne Kivett and James Kivett, all of Liberty, John Kivett of Climax; daughter, Kathleen Foust of Liberty; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday; other times at the home of her son, James Kivett, 1586 Low Bridge Road, Liberty.
Carrie B. Dowd
SILER CITY - Carrie Beal Dowd, 83, of 2654 Silk Hope Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at SunBridge Care Facilities, Siler City.
Graveside service is 2 p.m. Thursday at Rives Chapel Baptist Cemetery, Siler City, with the Rev. Lamont Hemminger officiating.
She was a Chatham County native, a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church and was retired from Collins and Aikman Manufacturing Company. She was the widow of William Frank Dowd.
Surviving are daughters, Alice D. Fox and Linda D. Groce, both of Siler City, Gail D. Henderson of Franklinville; sisters, Doris B. Young of Graham, Lois B. Whitaker of Pittsboro; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

SILER CITY - John Franklin Shuke Sr., 83, of 159 Pine Forest Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Chatham Hospital, Inc.
He graduated from Kent State University in Ohio in 1942 and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was an active Rotarian for 20 years and operated Buckner's Jewelers.
Surviving are wife, Iris Buckner Shuke of Siler City; son, John Franklin Shuke Jr. of Siler City; brother, Charles Wayne Shuke of Findley, Ohio; sister, Edith Evelyn Shuke of Ravenna, Ohio; one granddaughter.

ASHEBORO - Mrs. Beulah Mae McNeill Cox, 87, of 1823 Newell Street, Asheboro, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation in Asheboro.
Mrs. Cox was born in Guilford County, N.C., on April 27, 1916, to the late Elzie and Mish Moody McNeill. She was a homemaker and she cared for many children in her home. She enjoyed gardening and cooking. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, Woodfin S. Cox and her daughter, Linda C. Maness.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Donna Maness Pierce and her husband, Brian, of Denton; grandson, Devin Maness of Asheboro; son-in-law, Yewell "Butch" Maness of Asheboro; great-granddaughters, Callie Pierce and Krista Pierce, both of Denton.
A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Kenneth Reaves officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Venson W. Loflin, a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Trinity, a member of Tabernacle Lions Club and a former employee of Laughlin Hosiery, Randleman.

Rachel G. Rosine
RAMSEUR - Rachel Gilmore Rosine, 74, of 448 Weatherly St., died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Universal Health Care in Ramseur.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Jordan Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mary Miller officiating.
Rachel was born on Nov. 11, 1929, in Pittsboro, to Bud Wrenn Gilmore and Estella Bland Gilmore. She graduated from Ramseur High School in 1947 and attended Flora McDonald College in Red Springs. She worked as a stewardess for Eastern Airlines, until her marriage to Henry Rosine, an Eastern Airlines pilot. She is preceded in death by her husband and her niece, Joanna Marley.
Surviving are sisters, Antoinette "Toni" Marley of Ramseur, Louise Nauss of Harrisburg, Pa., Peggy Fox of Asheboro; brother, Mont Gilmore of Asheboro; 11 nieces and nephews; 13 great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends in the Craven Room at the church after the service and other times at the home of Antoinette "Toni" Marley, 448 Weatherly St., Ramseur.

PLEASANT GARDEN - Katherine Wall Butler, 86, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Wesley Long Nursing Center.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm Street Chapel, by the Rev. Charles L. Rowland. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Franklin Butler; a son, John Edward Butler; two grandchildren; and a special friend, Walter Thompson.
She is survived by her sons, Franklin Lee Butler and his wife, Betty Jean, of Asheboro, William Thomas Butler and his wife, Ruth, of Stokesdale, Taylor Brooks Butler and his wife, Gloria, of Pleasant Garden; a daughter, Marlene Butler Riley of Pleasant Garden; a daughter-in-law, Kristin Butler of Level Cross; a special friend, Mary Mowrey of Climax; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

SPARTA - Eva Sue Evans Thornton, 73, of 179 Combs St., died Tuesday evening, Dec. 30, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta.
She is survived by her husband, Coy Wayne Thornton of Low Gap; four daughters, Helen Louise Rabon of Gainsville, Ga., Ruby Pauline Shirley and husband, Lindsay, of Randleman, Shirley Ann Halsey and husband, Cecil, of Randleman, and Linda Virginia Dumph of Sophia; a son, Tommy Eugene Thornton and wife, Rachel, of Randleman; 10 grandchildren, Tina Zonnenberg, Susan Carter, Daniel Davis, Lisa Beane, Ira Halsey Jr., Rebecca Thornton, Kasey Thornton, Mindy Thornton, Christina Dumph and Joey Dumph; and five great-grandchildren, Justin Beane, Jamie Halsey, Andy Carter, Kennedy Carter and Jakob Carter; three sisters, Viola Gaye Tilley of Winston-Salem, Minnie Lou Riling of Inverness, Fla., and Lillie Mae Halsey of Glade Valley; and a brother, Clyde Evans of Sparta. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at the Whitehead Union Baptist Church with burial in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church just in time for the funeral services.

SOPHIA - Fred Ernest Redding, 77, of 4116 Plainfield Road, Sophia, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at his home.
Funeral service is 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at South Plainfield Friends Meeting with the Rev. Hugh C. Spaulding officiating. Burial will be in the meetinghouse cemetery.
He was a native of Randolph County and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Redding was retired self-employed Seamless Gutting Co. and formerly a Charles Chip distributor for the local area.
Surviving are wife, Peggy Farlow Redding of Sophia; sons, Dan Redding and wife, Chris Redding, of Jefferson City, Tenn. and Bob Redding and wife, Cindy Redding, of Seagrove; sisters, Nellie Harris and Notre Hollingsworth, both of Sophia; grandchildren, Dan Redding Jr., David Redding, Becky Skeen, Lindsey Redding and Rob Redding; great-grandchild, Coleman Skeen.

Earl D. Bruton Jr.
GREENVILLE - Colonel Retired Earl Dudley Bruton Jr. died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004.
Memorial service will be conducted at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Col. Bruton was born and raised in Candor. He attended UNC and was a 1945 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He earned his MBA at George Washington University and his Masters of Education degree from East Carolina University. Col. Bruton served in the U.S Air Force for 33 years, retiring in 1975 at the rank of Colonel. He saw action during his service with the 18th Fighter Bomber Group during the Korean Conflict. He served on the Staff of Royal Air Force Air Academy RAF Cranwell, England and was on the faculty of the Warfare Systems School at the Maxwell Air Force Base. He was Deputy Commander of Operations with the 52nd Air Defense Wing, Okinawa. In addition, he served on Air Staff at the Pentagon for four years. Mr. Bruton was Commander of Air Force ROTC at ECU from 1972-1975. During his service he received several notable awards, including the Legion of Merit, the Meritous Service Medal, the District Flying Cross and the Air Medal Oak Leaf Cluster.
Col. Bruton was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he served as both Junior and Senior Warden.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Bruton of Greenville; daughters, Leslie Schneider and her husband, Bob, of Lake Norman, Denver, N.C., Barbie Bryan and her husband, Morris, of Anderson, S.C., Caroline Chura and her husband, Jim, of Lake Royal; brothers, Dr. H. David Bruton and his wife, Frieda, of Carthage; sister, Mrs. Evelyn Monroe and her husband, Dr. John Monroe, of Pinehurst; sister-in-law, Betty Lou Bruton of Candor; six grandchildren.
