ASHEBORO - Eva Lucille Burrow Beane, 91, of 3704 Old Cox Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pan- ther Creek Baptist Church, with Dr. Warren London officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Ernest L. Beane, a homemaker and she attended Panther Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Rev. John Beane and Newman Beane, both of Asheboro; brother, John "J.B."Burrow of California; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Rev. and Mrs. John Beane, 5651 Old N.C. 13, Asheboro.

Tyson Dawson
ASHEBORO - Emery Tyson Dawson, 54, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in Asheboro.

Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Hopewell Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Daniel Thames officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a former brick mason, a former member of the NC National Guard and he attended Hopewell Friends Meeting.

Surviving are son, Jeremy Dawson of Asheboro; brother, Glenn A. Dawson Jr. of Asheboro.

The family will be at the church following the memorial service.

ASHEBORO - Ernest E. Edwards, 89, of 121 Liberty St., Asheboro, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Mariner Health Care, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Asheboro Friends Meeting, where he was a member, with the Rev. Leslie N. Winslow and the Rev. Robert L. Kidd officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired employee of United Dairies of Asheboro and a former employee with Farlow's Produce.

Surviving are wife, Ruth Trogdon Edwards; son, Donald R. Edwards of Florida; sister, Myrtle Edwards Wright of Coleridge; one grandson.

The family will be at the church 1-2 p.m. Saturday.

ASHEBORO - Paul "June" Payne Jr., 71, of HC8 Box 931, Dublin, Va., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Huldah Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Billy Metters and the Rev. Tommy Walker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a past deacon and Sunday School teacher at his church, a retired employee of Shapiro & Shapiro, Inc., Asheboro, after 43 years and employed as a greeter with Wal-Mart, Wytheville, Va.

Surviving are wife, Carmelita Greene Payne; sons, Paul David Payne and Tim Payne, both of Asheboro; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Clyde M. Potts
ASHEBORO - Clyde Madison Potts, 75, of 1132 Giles Chapel Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Clyde Allen and the Rev. David Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a member of the National Guard Reserves, a former employee of Dixie Furniture Company and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are wife, Mary Davis Potts; daughters, Susan P. Moffitt of Coleridge, Robin P. Clodfelter of Mt. Airy; son, George "Tommy" Potts of Asheboro; sister, Bessie Hancock of Asheboro; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of the son, 1253 Foggy Top Road, Asheboro.

LEXINGTON - Jason Andrew Robertson, 18, of 329 Cunningham Brickyard Road, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at his home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Falls Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County and self-employed with landscaping services.

Surviving are father, Robert Eugene Robertson of Lexington; mother, Teresa Lorraine Givens of Ramseur; sisters, Gina Robertson of Randleman, Angele Robertson and Melissa Dawn Gaither, both of Lexington; half sisters, Yolanda Sanchez and Selena Givens, both of Ramseur; brother, Ronald Robertson of Lexington; half brother, Harley Davidson of Ramseur; grandparents, Terry and Judy Lucas of Asheboro.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

CARTHAGE - Mary Vernell Maness, 61, of 204 Mt. Carmel Road, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Asbury Baptist Church, Seagrove, where she was a member, with the Rev. Clay Davis and the Rev. Maurice Cooper officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a graduate of Seagrove High School and a home health nurse.

Surviving are son, Randy L. Hussey of Robbins; brother, Bobby L. Maness of Bennett.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Mary S. Brocker
MONCURE - Mary Jo Shelnutt Brocker, 71, of 320 Hermitage Lane, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Tim Strider officiating.

She was a native of Wedowee, Ala., and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, William A. "Bill" Brocker of the home; sons, William A. Brocker Jr. and Walter L. Brocker, both of Moncure; brothers, Doyle Shelnutt of Roanoke, Ala., Sammy Shelnutt and James Shelnutt, both of Sylacauga, Ala., Calvin Shelnutt of Birmingham, Ala., Grady Shelnutt of Wedowee, Ala., George Shelnutt of Saint Charles, Mo.; sisters, Irma Boyd of Wedowee, Ala., Ada Hallman of Sylacauga, Ala.; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

Mary H. Andrews
ASHEBORO - Mary Lou Hinshaw Andrews, 54, of 2943 Spero Road, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at her home.

She was born Oct. 22, 1949, in Guilford County, a daughter of Delbert D. and Lena Emma Stout Hinshaw. She was an employee of Jefferson-Pilot Corporation in Greensboro and a member of Cedar Square Friends Meeting. On Aug. 22,1969, she married Roland Lee Andrews, who survives of the home.

Also surviving are a daughter, Emily Nicole Hurt and husband, Joe of Walkertown; a son, Brian Samuel Andrews and wife, Sharon of Gloucester, Va.; two brothers, Gary William Hinshaw of Randleman and Hurley Reece Hinshaw and wife, Lynda of Randleman; two grandchildren, Ryne Osborne and De Anna Lee Andrews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Delbert Hinshaw.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Square Friends Meeting, by Pastor Eric Woods. Burial will be in the meeting cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Sechrest Family Funeral Care, 120 Trindale Road, Archdale.

Ellen H. Price
ASHEBORO - Mattie Ellen Hasty Price, 66, of 302 Wesley Court, Asheboro, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004.

Mrs. Price was born in Randolph County on April 21, 1937, to Mattie Vernon Tucker Hasty and the late Charles Leard Hasty. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Wilbur Hasty, and her great-granddaughter, Carisha Smith.

Ellen loved her children, grandchildren, and family above all else. She was never happier than when they were all gathered together in one great big happy and loving group. She will be remembered for her quick wit and her love of laughter. She also loved her Lord and gave him credit for everything.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlene Smith Cattoi of Virginia Beach, Va.; son, Kenneth J. Smith of Asheboro; parents, John and Mattie Vernon Flowers of Asheboro; brothers, George Leard Hasty of Chapel Hill, John V. Flowers, Charles Flowers, both of Asheboro; grandchildren, Natasha Smith of Asheboro, Jami Moody, Kory Moody, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; great-grandson, Tarell Smith of Asheboro.

A celebration of life service will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Williams officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service at Ridge Funeral Home, other times at the home.

Richard E. Kennedy
STAR - Richard Edwin Kennedy, 90, of Star, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary.

He had lived with his daughter, Edna Cole and her husband, Charles, for the past 16 months in Cary. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Connie Spivey Kennedy, in July 1993. He was also predeceased by his parents, Daniel Alexander Kennedy and Mary Jane Spivey Kennedy, and two brothers, Garland Kennedy and Charles Kennedy.

Survivors in addition to his daughter are son, Douglas Kennedy and wife Barbara of Star; brother, Warren Kennedy of Robbins; granddaughters, Debbie Edwards and husband Stanley of Raleigh, Sonya Sasser of Lancaster, S.C., Karen Kennedy and husband, Rick Hooker of Star; grandson, Mark Kennedy and wife, Darla of Beale AFB, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Stacey Fowler of Rockingham, Jeremy Fowler of Jackson Springs, Courtney Sasser of Aberdeen and Emma Marie Kennedy of Beale AFB, Calif.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Daniel Edwards of Raleigh and Jennifer Edwards of Baltimore, Md. Also surviving are nephews, Arnold Kennedy of Robbins, Wallace Spivey of Statesboro, Ga., David Kennedy of Raleigh, Farrell Kennedy of Cary, Roger Kennedy of Robbins; niece, Brenda Kennedy Williams of Eagle Springs.

A service in celebration of his life will be held at Dover Baptist Church, where he was the oldest male member and a former deacon, on Sunday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m., officiated by Dr. Donald Davis. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Maynard Road in Cary on Friday, Jan. 2, from 7-9 p.m. The family will receive friends at Phillips Funeral Home in Star on Saturday, Jan. 3, from 7-9 p.m.

Edward C. Land Jr.
DAVIDSON - Col. Edward Champion Land Jr. of Davidson, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004.

Champ Land, the son of Edward Champion Land and Caroline Price Land, was born in Greensboro on May 14, 1912. He graduated from Oak Ridge Military Institute and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a tennis champion in Greensboro in his teens, a varsity football and basketball player at Oak Ridge and Chapel Hill and an excellent golfer all his life, having first shot his age at 67.

In 1942 he volunteered for the US Army. He attended OCS at Ft. Benning where he was commissioned as an infantry officer and served at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and in Greenland. Following active duty, he remained in the reserves where he last served as a regimental commander. He retired from the Army in June of 1967.

Before the war he was employed by General Motors Corporation. After the war he and his wife Anna moved to Lincolnton where he founded Lincoln Finance Company which later merged with M & J Finance Company of Shelby. Mr. Land retired from business as senior Vice President of M & J Finance Company.

During his 48 years in Lincolnton, Champ was active in his church and in civic affairs. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board of Stewards and taught Sunday School for 35 years. He was Chairman of the Lincoln County Planning Board, a member of the Lincoln County Board of Education, a member of Governor Sanford's Committee of 100 For Education, President of the Independent Finance Companies Association, a member of the board of Lincolnton Christian Ministries, President of the Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, and on the board of the Lincoln Country Club. For 15 years, Champ and Anna delivered meals to shut-ins. In 1995 they moved to the Pines at Davidson.

Champ Land is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anna Ingram Land; his sister-in-law, Foy A. Ingram; his daughter, Christianna Land Johnson and husband Robert W. Johnson of Wilmington; his son, Edward Champion Land III and wife Jean Hanley Land of Statesville; and by his grandchildren, Anna Johnson Averitt and husband Franklin Murphy Averitt III, Allison Riordon Ingram Land, Emilie Wilson Hanley Land and Edward Champion Land IV. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Augustus Land of Charlotte.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, Jan. 3, at Asheboro City Cemetery, Asheboro, which will be followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Lincolnton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Joslyn Diabetes Center, One Joslyn Place, Boston, Mass. 02215 or a charity of your choice.

Bernice C. Hayes
ASHEBORO - Addie Bernice Coltrane Hayes, 92, of 500 Mountain Top Drive, Asheboro, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Funeral service is 4 p.m. Sunday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. David Roudabush. Burial will be in Old Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a Randolph County native and a homemaker. She was a member of Old Union United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School there for several years.

Surviving are brothers, Worth Coltrane of Greensboro and Irvin Coltrane of Annandale, Va.

The family will be at the funeral home 3-4 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service.

Connie L. Hensley
ARCHDALE - Connie Lynn Hensley, 39, of Frank White Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at her home.

Graveside service is 2 p.m. Monday at Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro, with the Rev. Brian Powell officiating.

She was a Buncombe County native and a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are parents, Ernest and Patricia Hensley of Trinity; daughters, Joanie Vick and Laura Vick, both of Asheville; son, Thomas Vick of Asheville; brother, Ernie Hensley of Asheboro.

The family will be at the Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Monday.

George M. Walters
SILER CITY - George Mabern Walters, 87, of 274 Lambert Chapel Road, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service is 3 p.m. Monday at Oakley Baptist Church, Siler City, where he was a member, with the Rev. J.R. Bouldin officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek.

He was a Chatham County native and a farmer. He was the widower of Sammie Lou Fields Walter.

Surviving are daughter, Bonnie W. Davis of Siler City; sons, Wayne Walters of Bonlee, Bennie Walters and Ed Walters, both of Bear Creek, Cecil Walters and Bill Walters, both of Siler City; sister, Alice Lowdermilk of McLeansville; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Sunday; other times at the home of Cecil Walters, 400 Lambert Chapel Church Road, Siler City.

Pauline W. Nettles
SILER CITY - Pauline L. Williams Nettles, 82, of 1007 Brucemont Drive, Garner, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Convalescent Care of Sanford.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Monday at Corinth A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Corey Little officiating.

She was a Chatham County native and a retired homemaker. She is the widow of Floyd Nettles.

Surviving are daughter, Eula W. Rush of Garner; sisters, Corene Blair of Greensboro, Gerlene Taylor of Pittsboro; brother, G.E. Williams Sr. of Pittsboro; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

TROY - Myrtle Frances Wright, 79, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with the Rev. Jimmy Shirley officiating. Burial will be in Suggs Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Ether Road, Star.

She was a Montgomery county native and a homemaker.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday; other times at the home of Bobby and Shirley Saunders, 460 Triump St., Troy.

Beatrice S. Tucker
CREEDMORE - Beatrice Swain Tucker, 69, of 1571 Duck Pond Apartments, formerly of 201 Watkins Drive, Siler City, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at her home.

Graveside service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City, with the Rev. Ronald Thompson officiating.

She was a Buncombe County native, a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are husband, Porter Tucker of Creedmore; daughter, Gayle Gibbs of Franklinton; one granddaughter.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Hubbard D. Baker Sr.
SOPHIA - Hubbard D. Baker Sr., 85, of 4101 Baker Farm Road, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Brookstone Haven Retirement Community in Randleman.

He was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Wake County, a son of Leonard A. and Luna Maynard Baker. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was employed as an accountant by Piedmont Trailer Repair, retiring in 1985. He was a former fireman with the Sophia Volunteer Fire Department. In 1940 he married the former Lillie Lavon Canoy who died May 15, 2001.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Akines and husband, Johnny, of Sophia, and Janie Newby of Sophia. Two sons, Hubbard D. Baker Jr. and wife, Judy, of Sophia, and James Brye Baker and wife, Lena, of Asheboro. Two sisters, Jessie Baker of High Point and Betty H. Baker of High Point. Eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Sechrest Funeral Service, 120 Trindale Road, Archdale. Visitation will follow the service. The family will also receive friends Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the home, 4101 Baker Farm Road, Sophia.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Randolph County, 416 Vision Drive, Asheboro, N.C. 27203.
