CEDAR FALLS - James Richard "Buddy" Baxter, 73, of 2521 River Rat Road, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Full Gospel Bible Church of God, with the Rev. Terry Bachelor officiating. Burial will be in Franklinville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Lewis County, Tenn., and a retired employee of Klaussner Furniture.

Surviving are wife, Freda Oakes Baxter of the home; sons, James R. Blue of Mylan, Tenn., James W. Baxter and Billy Joe Baxter, both of Hohenwald, Tenn., Bobby Lee Baxter of Cedar Falls; daughters, Helen Blue Simmons of Chicago, Ill., Rose Marie B. Brady and Rena Renee B. Allen, both of Asheboro; sister, Unive Hensley of Hohenwald, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

RAMSEUR - Shirley Gaynelle Allred, 68, of 151 King Hill Road., Apt. 3C, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Eddie Hill officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Falls Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a retired employee of Cross Road Retirement Community.

Surviving is brother, Ray Allred of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of the brother, 903 Garner Farm Road, Asheboro.

DENTON - Betty Joe Glover Shaw, 78, of Mountain Vista Health Park, formerly of Bombay Road, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Mountain Vista Health Park.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Kerry Fralic officiating. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery.

She was a native of Stanly County, the widow of Bill Shaw, a homemaker and a member of the Mary Frances Stubbs Circle at her church.

Surviving are sons, Denny Shaw of Prospect, Ky., William Shaw of Greensboro; daughters, Vivian McFadden of Rock Hill, S.C., Belva Williams of Archdale; brother, Gary Glover of Charlotte; sisters, Coleen Greene and Nancy Cates, both of Greensboro, Janet Biddle of Texas; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Libby Hall, 1432 Flat Swamp Road, Denton.

DENTON - Audrey Lee Holder Hedrick Swing, 75, of Tysinger Road, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in Lexington.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Roger Weisner officiating.

She was a native of Guilford County, the widow of Chester M. Hedrick Jr. and Joseph T. Swing, a retired employee of Burlington Industries and she attended Fairview United Methodist Church.

Surviving are son, Larry O. Hedrick of Bryan, Texas; daughter, Tamara H. Hall of Denton; sister, Argie H. Hedrick of Lexington; brother, James H. Holder of Bryan, Texas; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Esau S. McCaskill
CANDOR - Esau Samuel McCaskill, 87, of 610 Brutonville Road, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salisbury.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a graduate of Peabody High School, a graduate of A&I College in Tennessee with a B.S. and a graduate of Ithaca University in New York with a Masters. He attended NC A&T State University, Greensboro. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post, Queen Esther Lodge #99, Virgin Mary Lodge #108, the NAACP and the Pee Dee Organization.

Surviving is wife, Dorothy McCaskill of the home.

The family will be at the church 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

STAR - Joseph Farrell "Jody" Parsons, 50, of 385 McBride Lumber Road, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with the Rev. Toney Parsons and Dr. Bruce Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Leach Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County and an upholsterer with Lancer Inc., Star.

Surviving are wife, Becky Wright Parsons of the home; sons, Farrell Parsons of Biscoe, Brad Parsons of the home; mother, Pearl Dennis Parsons of Troy; brothers, Garrett Parsons and Doug Parsons, both of Troy, Johnny Parsons of Candor, Rev. Toney Parsons of Denton; sister, Brenda Sanders of Biscoe.

Mary S. Hielema
OXFORD - Mary Elizabeth Spencer Hielema, 77, of 2615 Bodie Currin Road, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Granville Medical Center.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry, Newell and Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford, with Dr. Reynolds Price officiating. Burial will be in Tranquility Cemetery.

She was a graduate of Oxford High School, a former employee of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., a retired employee of Murdock Center in Butner, and a farmer and a gardener.

Surviving are daughter, Donna Louise Hielema of Raleigh, formerly of Asheboro; sons, Frank John Hielema of Raleigh, Andrew Edward Hielema of Oxford; sisters, Anne Blalock of Spring Lake, Alice Singleton of Richmond, Va., Helen Council of Oxford; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday night, other times at her home, and at the home of Andrew and Joyce Hielema, 3584 High Ridge Court, Tar River Farms, Oxford.

Memorials may be made by planting a flowering plant or putting in a bird feeder.

William E. Carter
ASHEBORO - William Eugene "Bill" Carter, 74, of 3171 Old Cedar Falls Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral service for Mr. Carter will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ervin Hauser and the Rev. Edna Riggs officiating. Entombment will follow at Randolph Memorial Park.

Mr. Carter was born on Nov. 17, 1929, in Scotland County to the late Louis and Willa Dunn Carter. He retired from Clarendon Industry as vice-president of Purchasing. Mr. Carter served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne 511th Division during the Korean War. He was an active member of Central Falls United Methodist Church He enjoyed farming and building houses.

Survivors include his wife, Libby Trotter Carter of the home; daughters, Wanda Denise Carter of Greensboro, Pamela Carter Gatto of Winston-Salem; sisters, Pearl Larson of Manchester, Iowa, Ruth Spivey of Asheboro; brother, Irvin Carter of Asheboro; grandchildren, Adam Benjamin Cohen and Nicole Elizabeth Gatto.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro and other times at the home.

Pearl W. Pate
ASHEBORO - Pearl Weaver Pate, 90, formerly of Asheboro, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Mayview Convalescent Center, Raleigh.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

Mrs. Pate was a native of Wayne County and a graduate of Kings Business College. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Asheboro and was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Pate, her son, William C. Pate Jr., and her grandson, Andy Pate.

Surviving are daughter, Mary Belle Pate of Raleigh; daughter-in-law, Brenda King Pate of Asheboro; grandson, Scott Pate and wife Laura of Asheboro; great-granddaughter, Megan Pate of Randleman; great-grandsons, Gage Pate and Dylan Pate, both of Asheboro; brothers and sisters, Norma Lee, John, Huey, Lila Mae, Jimmy and Judy.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7.

ASHEBORO - Everette Charles Kickler Sr., 93, of Asheboro, formerly of Richmond, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be noon Friday at Dale Memorial Park Cemetery, Chesterfield, Va., with the Rev. Donald Sumpter officiating,

He was a native of Bellevue, Ohio, the widower of Gladys Scruggs Kickler, an accountant for the state of Virginia, a World War II veteran and a member of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church, Asheboro.

Surviving are sons, Everette C. "Sonny" Kickler Jr. of Sophia, Donald Wayne Kickler and James E. Kickler, both of Richmond, Va., Gary M. Kickler of Goodland, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fayetteville Street Baptist Church, Asheboro, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Pastor Patrick Hamrick officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Gladys Rich of Asheboro; brothers, Ollie Smith and Jesse Smith, both of Asheboro; sister, Margaret Dorsett of Asheboro; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 12:30-2 p.m. Wednesday.

Eula M. McClain
STALEY - Eula Mae McClain, 78, of 7299 Margaret Chapel Road, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Olivers Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gaylyn Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Leroy McClain, president of the deaconess board and a class leader at her church.

Surviving are sons, Bobby Lee McClain of Jacksonville, the Rev. Steven Ray McClain of Ramseur; stepson, L.J. Garner of Staley; sisters, Delsie Hilton and Annie Ruth Matthews, both of Winston-Salem, Shelia Guin of Asheboro, Dr. Ocie M. Brown of Staley, Linda Grave of Reidsville; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1-2 p.m. Thursday.

DENTON - Jackson Dale Jernigan, infant son of Billy Dale and Joanna Marie Jackson Jernigan of 408 Farmbrook Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at his home.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Motley officiating.

He was a native of Davidson County.

Surviving in addition to the parents are brother, Jacob Lynn Casey-Motley of the home; grandparents, Roosevelt Jernigan of Denton, Donald and Becky Jackson of New London, Elizabeth and Michael Butchino of Goldsboro; great-grandparents, Patricia B. Robbins and Pierce Robbins, both of Lexington, Howard Yates of Denton, Reeves and Brenda Craven of Winston-Salem, Doris and Bill French of Meadows of Dan, Va.

DENTON - Daisy Maie Morgan, 83, of Jackson, Mich., formerly of Old Silver Hill Road, Lexington, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in Jackson, Mich.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Summerville Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a member of Summerville Baptist Church and a former employee of Dixie Furniture in Lexington.

Surviving are son, Larry Morgan of Jackson, Mich.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Donald K. Weikum
BATAVIA, Ill. - Donald Kenneth Weikum, 68, of Asheboro, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at his home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Moss Family Funeral Home, Batavia, Ill., with the Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Forest Park, Ill.

He was a native of Chicago, Ill., and owner/operator of O.G. Cab Company in Lyons, Ill.

Surviving are daughters, Mary Arreola and Cynthia Hatfield, both of Asheboro, Deborah Pawlowski and Judith Weikum, both of Batavia, Ill.; sister, Lois Boerman; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Moss Family Funeral Home, Batavia, Ill., 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday.

Robert L. Cannon
THOMASVILLE - Robert Lee "Bud" Cannon, 78, a resident of Duke Street, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 5, 2004, in the Thomasville Medical Center.

He was born July 18, 1925, in Burke County, a son of James Jacob Cannon and Annie Lou Deal Cannon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was formerly employed with N.C.N.B. Mr. Cannon was a member of the Thomasville Lions Club and Memorial United Methodist Church. He was first married to Lois Irene Kennedy, who died June 7, 1985. He later married Rebecca Harrison, who preceded him in death April 2000. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Lee "Bobby" Cannon Jr.

Surviving are a daughter, Janice "Beth" Cannon Prevatte and husband Ronnie of Archdale; a stepdaughter, Beverly Clinard and husband Bill of Little River, S.C.; a son, David B. Cannon and wife Phyllis of Asheboro; stepsons, Steve Harrison and wife Susan of Thomasville and Richard Harrison and wife Jane of Gastonia; a sister, Ila Harris of Alexandria, Va.; one brother, Dave Cannon of Thomasville; grandchildren, Amy Prevatte Chase, Brian Michael Prevatte, Lindsey Thayer Cannon and Leslie Erin Cannon; stepgrandchildren, Ben Harrison, Tom Harrison, Scott Harrison and Emily Leazer; a great-granddaughter, Tiffany Marie Chase; stepgreat-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Leazer.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 10 a.m. in Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peggy Finch and the Rev. P. Glenn Kinken III officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Mr. Cannon will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville, until the service hour.

ASHEBORO - Annie Grace Burns, 86, of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Asheboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Asheboro.

She was a native of Lumberton, a homemaker and a former employee with Acme-McCrary Corp.

Surviving are husband, Victor H. Burns; daughters, Mary Ann Payne of Asheboro, Patsy B. Reed of Trinity; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

RAMSEUR - Grace Mary Greene, 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. James Turner and the Rev. Don Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a retired employee of Randolph Mills and a member of First Baptist Church of Franklinville.

Surviving are daughters, Doris Carmac of Ramseur, Peggy McKinney of Raleigh; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

DENTON - Lillie Belle Bailey Shipton, 95, of Hulin-McDowell Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at her home.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Frank Shipton and a homemaker. She attended Piney Grove Methodist Church.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a member of First Baptist Church of Troy, a retired electrician and a retired employee of the Montgomery County Rescue Squad after 28 years.

Surviving are wife, Juanita Auman Wallace of the home; daughters, Enid W. Hickman of Wilmington, Pam Wallace of Stanley; brother, Grady Wallace of Troy; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
