He was a native of Stanly County and a retired highway equipment maintenance worker with the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Surviving are wife, Haskell Burris Howard of the home; son, Eddie Wayne Howard of New London; daughter, Kathy Denise Howard of New London; brother, the Rev. Thurman Howard of Albemarle; sister, Evelyn Callicutt of Star; stepsons, Donny L. Fesperman of Albemarle, Kem C. Eleanor Virginia Swetcoff Hawks, 72, of 142 W. Presnell St., Asheboro, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Carl Dunker and the Rev. Junior Dawkins officiating and eulogy by Sheriff Litchard Hurley. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
She was a native of Boissevain, Va., retired from Tie Rite Neckwear and was a member of Montcalm Pentecostal Holiness Church, Montcalm, W. Va.
Surviving are husband, Charlie W. Hawks Jr. of the home; daughter, Barbara H. Harlan, Carol H. Idol, both of Asheboro; son, Larry W. Hawks of Asheboro; sister, Dot Parrish of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Florence Newberry Bowman, 86, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Clapp's Nursing Home, Asheboro.

She was a native of Hazard, Ky., the widow of Earl L. Bowman and a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving are granddaughter, Linda Pemberton of Asheboro, with whom she had lived; sister, Margaret Mahaney of Newport News, Va.; brothers, Frank Newberry, Robert Newberry, both of Hampton, Va.; one grandson; two great-grandchildren.

Surviving are daughters, Shirley McLean, Kathy Lambeth, both of Thomasville; sons, Robert "Bobby" Embler of Thomasville, Larry Embler of Asheboro; sister, Ina Walden; brothers, Lewis Hunt, Carl Hunt and Raeford Hunt; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Bellefonte, Pa., a 1982 graduate of Bruton High School in Williamsburg, Va., a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a former security guard with North Coast Security and Investigation in Fredericksburg, Va.
