ALBEMARLE - Herman Harvey Howard, 59, of 20325 Sam Road, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Mercy Hospital.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Oakboro, where he was a member, with the Rev. Phillip Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Stanly County and a retired highway equipment maintenance worker with the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Surviving are wife, Haskell Burris Howard of the home; son, Eddie Wayne Howard of New London; daughter, Kathy Denise Howard of New London; brother, the Rev. Thurman Howard of Albemarle; sister, Evelyn Callicutt of Star; stepsons, Donny L. Fesperman of Albemarle, Kem C. Fesperman of Stanfield; one grandchild; five stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild.

The family will be at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Josie L. Allred
Josie Lee Allred, 90, of Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at the center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Pugh Funeral Home Asheboro.

Eleanor S. Hawks

Eleanor Virginia Swetcoff Hawks, 72, of 142 W. Presnell St., Asheboro, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Carl Dunker and the Rev. Junior Dawkins officiating and eulogy by Sheriff Litchard Hurley. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Boissevain, Va., retired from Tie Rite Neckwear and was a member of Montcalm Pentecostal Holiness Church, Montcalm, W. Va.

Surviving are husband, Charlie W. Hawks Jr. of the home; daughter, Barbara H. Harlan, Carol H. Idol, both of Asheboro; son, Larry W. Hawks of Asheboro; sister, Dot Parrish of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Florence N. Bowman

Florence Newberry Bowman, 86, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Clapp's Nursing Home, Asheboro.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bowman Cemetery, Beattyville, Ky., with the Rev. L.C. Moore officiating.

She was a native of Hazard, Ky., the widow of Earl L. Bowman and a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are granddaughter, Linda Pemberton of Asheboro, with whom she had lived; sister, Margaret Mahaney of Newport News, Va.; brothers, Frank Newberry, Robert Newberry, both of Hampton, Va.; one grandson; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Newnam Funeral Home, Beattyville, Ky., 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Grace S. Kearns

Grace Allene Strider Kearns, 87, of 731 Morgan Ave., Asheboro, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Sunrise Care & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Joe Edwards and the Rev. D.C. Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Harry H. Kearns and was retired from B.B. Walker Company.

Surviving are daughter, Jeanette K. Jarrell of Asheboro; one grandson.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of the daughter, 2708 Oak Hollow Drive, Asheboro.

Billy L. Lamonds

Billy Lee Lamonds, 65, of 3808 Midway Acres Road, Asheboro, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at his home.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with the Rev. Mike Holyfield and Bruce Turner officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a wood carver, a continuing education instructor for several community colleges and a former scout master for Troop 513, Seagrove.

Surviving are wife, Vera M. Lamonds of the home; mother, Elma W. Lamonds of Star; son, Barry L. Lamonds of Troy; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Charles A. Johnson

RANDLEMAN - Charles Addison Johnson, 77, of 124 S. Coble St., died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. J. Arnold Luther officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Guilford County and a retired employee of Klopman Mills.

Surviving are wife, Meadows Dennis Johnson of Randleman; sons, William Johnson of Rock Hill, S.C., James Johnson of Greensboro, Kenneth Johnson, Alan Johnson, Ronald Johnson, all of Asheboro; daughters, Doris Goldman of Little River, S.C., Alice Bumgarner of Asheboro, Ginger Key of Greensboro, Debbie Brown of High Point; brother, Gene Johnson of Randleman; sister, Ila Mae Hill of Randleman; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

RANDLEMAN - Charles "Shorty" Alston Underwood, 78, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Kingsport, Tenn., and a retired brickmason.

Surviving are Joy B. Luke of the home; Denny Luke of the home; son, Ronnie Frye of Wilmington; daughter, Judy Treadway of Baltimore, Md.; sister, Martha Jean Jeffries of Raleigh; brother, William "Bill" H. Underwood of Asheboro; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Boles Funeral Home & Crematory, Seven Lakes, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Sallie K. Allred

GREENSBORO - Sallie Kivett Allred, 94, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Greensboro Retirement Center.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, with the Rev. J.R. Gossett officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a member of Community Baptist Church and a retired employee of Vicks Chemical Manufacturing Company.

Surviving are son, Ross M. Kivett Jr. of Holden Beach; sister, Myrtle McMasters of Greensboro; two grandsons; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Ross Kivett, 2904 Azalea Drive, Greensboro.

THOMASVILLE - Colleen Hunt Embler, 71, of Sullivan Road, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hillside Park Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. John Wheeles and Rev. Dave Jarrett officiating. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

She was a native of High Point, a member of the choir and women's missionary union and a Sunday School teacher at her church, a volunteer for Davidson County Senior Services and Meals on Wheels and the widow of Harlie Junior Embler.

Surviving are daughters, Shirley McLean, Kathy Lambeth, both of Thomasville; sons, Robert "Bobby" Embler of Thomasville, Larry Embler of Asheboro; sister, Ina Walden; brothers, Lewis Hunt, Carl Hunt and Raeford Hunt; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Sechrest Funeral Home, Thomasville, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and other times at the home of Shirley McLean, 866 Sullivan Road.

James W. Barker

SILER CITY - James W. "Bill" Barker, 67, of 806 Cliftwood Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Staley, where he was a member, with the Rev. David Edinger officiating. Burial will be in Staley Cemetery.

He was a sales representative for Triangle Brick, Durham, and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.

Surviving are wife, Frances V. Barker of Siler City; son, Rick Barker of Raleigh.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Noah L. Cornelison

STAR - Noah Lee Cornelison, 91, of 3788 N.C. 134, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Macedonia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Earl Ward officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County and a retired logger.

Surviving is daughter, Carolyn DeZurik of Star.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Archie Branson

BENNETT - Archie "James" Branson, 70, of Liberty Village Apts., Liberty, formerly of Bennett, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, with the Rev. Hayes Ritter officiating. Burial will be in Bennett Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County.

Surviving are son, James L. Branson of Yanceyville; daughters, Ann Fogleman, Jackie B. Bailey, both of Burlington, Betty Jean Reitzel of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brother, Willie Branson of Palo Alto, Calif., Donald Branson of Bennett; sister, Mary Hernandez of Merced, Calif.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Karen Allen, 7891 Bennett Road, Bennett.

Larry Facer Jr.
TROY - Larry Louis Facer Jr., 33, of 351 Reservation Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, at Community General Hospital in Thomasville from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Briggs Funeral Chapel in Troy, with the Rev. Lee Fish officiating.

He was a native of Bellefonte, Pa., a 1982 graduate of Bruton High School in Williamsburg, Va., a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a former security guard with North Coast Security and Investigation in Fredericksburg, Va.

Surviving are son, Larry Louis Facer III of Carthage; daughter, Kaitlin A. Facer of Carthage; stepson, Branden Nelson of Troy; parents, Deborah and Thomas R. McNeill Sr. of Fredericksburg, Va., and Larry Louis Facer of Moyock; fiancee, Marisa Stone of Troy; brothers, Michael E. Facer of Chesapeake, Va., and Mark R. Facer of Nittendorf, Germany; grandfather, Richard T. Facer of State College, Pa.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Harold T. Grimes

RAMSEUR - Harold Tyler Grimes, 73, of 1126 Richardson Road, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Ramseur, with Minister Michael Moody and Minister Ben Harrell officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired after 30 years from the G.E. Corp. and Black & Decker, a World War II veteran and a member of the D.A.V. and of Ramseur Gospel Chapel.

Surviving is wife, Louise Wilson Grimes of the home.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

He was a native of Montgomery County and self-employed.

Surviving are daughter, Sabrina Woodard; parents, Tom Woodard and Faye Woodard, both of the home; brothers, Ricky Woodard and Tommy Woodard, both of Troy, and Eddie Woodard and Randy Woodard, both of Candor; sister, Wanda Mabe of Troy.

The family will be at the home of Wanda Mabe, Lovejoy Road, Troy.

BISCOE - Ruby Pearl Dunlap Yow, 80, of 17516 N.C. 24/27 East, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Pinehurst Nursing Center.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Zion Wesleyan Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Graham Fowler officiating.

She was a native of Moore County and retired from Pine Hosiery Mill in Star.

Surviving are sons, Phillip L. Yow and H. Joe Yow, both of Biscoe; sisters, Aleene McGill of Greensboro and Clarice Wilkes of Seagrove; brother, Walter J. Dunlap Jr. of Seagrove; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
