FAYETTEVILLE - Earl Glen Tew, 59, of 760 Dowfield Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eureka Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Leon Keefe, Rev. Dewight Easler and Rev. Donnie Drake officiating. Burial will be in La Fayette Memorial Park.

Surviving are daughter, Sandra T. Spainhour of Asheboro; sons, James E. Tew of La Follette, Tenn., Thomas "Tommy" N. Tew of Fayetteville, Donald "Don" G. Tew of Raeford and William D. Tew of Franklinville; sisters, Leda T. Matthews of Roseboro, Peggy T. Barker of Clinton and Bonnie T. Fann, Adeen T. Jordan and Elma T. Peterson, all of Fayetteville; brothers, Lacy Tew and H.A. Tew, both of Fayetteville, V. Cloys Tew of Stedman, and Robert Tew of Dunn; 12 grandchildren.

The family will be at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Jonathan P. Thompson

SEAGROVE - Jonathan Preston Thompson, 14, of 6272 Mount Lebanon Church Road, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Pugh Funeral Home Seagrove Chapel.

Lewis H. Hoskins
Lewis Howard Hoskins, 83, formerly of 1308 Cedar Falls Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at C.C. Hodges Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Emmanuel Holland officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are brothers, Edgar Hoskins Jr. and Wade Hoskins, both of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home noon-1 p.m. Wednesday and other times at the home of Edgar Hoskins.

Ethel H. Brigman

ELLERBE - Ethel Holder Brigman, 86, of 130 Brigman Road, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Denny Glennon officiating. Burial will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery.

She was a native of Chesterfield, S.C., a retired winder operator with Richmond Yarns Inc., a homemaker, a member of Sunday School and the United Methodist Women at her church and the widow of Arthur Brigman.

Surviving are sons, Legrand Brigman and Jimmy Zack Brigman, both of Ellerbe; daughters, Patty Jean Cook of Asheboro, Sarah Maddry of Camden, S.C., Nan Blackmon of Franklinville and Sally Shelton and Jacky LaMonds, both of Ellerbe; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

C. Harding Cockman

CARTHAGE - Calvin Harding Cockman, 77, of 1792 Borden Road, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service was 3 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Bennie Maness, Rev. Fred Richardson and Rev. Russell Craddock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a self-employed farmer.

Surviving are wife, Edith Pope Cockman of the home; daughter, Ruth C. Russell of Star; sons, Calvin Cockman of Carthage and Dean Cockman of Highfalls; sisters, Josie C. Stutts, Nancy C. Sheffield, Bell C. Pope, Donner C. Beck and Kathleen Craddock, all of Robbins; brothers, Roland Cockman and Benjamin Cockman, both of Robbins; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Kennedy Funeral Home in Robbins is in charge of arrangements.

Jonathan P. Thompson

Surviving are father, Eddie Thompson of the home; mother, Kathy Thompson of Rockingham; sister, Wendy Forrest of Ramseur; grandmothers, Patricia Thompson of Albemarle and Edna Holdaway of Charlotte; great-grandmother, Vera Thompson of Albemarle.

The family will be at the home.

Sarah Gertrude Spoon Vestal, 100, of 407 E. Dorsett Ave., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Flag Springs United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Luther Crady Jr. and Rev. J. Harold Hammond officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was the widow of Penn Vestal.

Surviving are son, Willard Vestal of Kernersville; sister, Lillian Dickens of Asheboro; three grandsons; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

Travis E. Blake

TROY - Travis Edward Blake, 80, of 216 Alexander Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital in Troy.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wadeville Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Neal Parsons officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a World War II veteran, a retired truck driver with Estes Motor Lines, of the Baptist faith and the widower of Jeanette Frix Blake.

Surviving are sons, Garry Blake of Mt. Gilead and Timothy Blake of Swan Quarter; daughters, Betty Reynolds and Helen Stokes, both of Troy; sister, Sadie Haywood of Mt. Gilead; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home 9-10 a.m. Thursday and other times at the home.

Robert L. Davis

ROBBINS - Robert Lee Davis, 51, of 516 Rushwood Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Brown's Chapel Christian Church with the Rev. Gary Weisner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a retired construction worker.

Surviving are sons, Scottie Davis of the home and Dale Davis of Seagrove; sisters, Faye D. Horner, Lib Cromer and Wanda Maness, all of Robbins; brother, Kenneth Davis of Robbins; one grandchild.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Thursday and other times at the home.

Bernice W. Jones

SILER CITY - Bernice W. Jones, of 4318 Alston Bridge Road, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service was 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gees Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, a member of the Usher Board and past member of the Missionary Circle and Wise Savings Club at her church.

Surviving are sisters, Blanch Walden and Treva Jeffries, both of Siler City; stepson, Edward Strahorn of Mebane.

Farrar and Farrar Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Vallie H. Parker

RANDLEMAN - Vallie Hunt Parker, 91, of 173 U.S. 311 Ext., died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel in Randleman with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, retired from Laughlin Hosiery Mill, a volunteer at Randolph Hospital, attended Forest Park Baptist Church and was the widow of the late Hubert Parker.

Surviving are daughter, Loretta Parker Kennedy of Randleman; son, James W. "Bill" Parker of Durham; sister, Kathern Hinshaw of Randleman; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday and other times at the residence of Loretta Kennedy, 166 Gum St., Randleman.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Robert H. Smith

WINSTON-SALEM - Robert Hayes Smith, 82, of Forrestgate Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at Forsyth Medical Center.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery with the Rev. John Blazer officiating.

He was a native of Lebanon, Pa., a 1939 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and a retired captain in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are daughters, Patricia D. Easter and Susan J. Smith, both of Winston-Salem, and JoAnne Smith of New York, N.Y.; son, Robert Smith of Clinton, Md.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association or Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

Irma J. Brown
Irma Jean Cox Brown, 61, of 3431 Happy Hollow Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Flag Springs United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Luther Crady, Rev. Lee Roy Hunt and Rev. Harold Hammond officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and retired after 27 years from Kayser Roth Corp.

Surviving are husband, Raiford Brown of the home; sons, Dean Brown and Jeff Brown, both of Asheboro; sisters, Geneva Smith of Robbins, Beulah Hayes of Ramseur and Mildred Brady of Columbia, S.C.; brothers, Worth Cox, Perry Cox and Howard Cox, all of Seagrove, and Gilbert Cox of Asheboro; one grandson.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home 6:30-9 p.m. Friday and other times at the home.

WINCHESTER, Ky. - Roby Clarence Boone, 88, of 806 Stacey Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at his home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Daniel Morgan Cemetery in Cowpens, S.C.

He was a native of Seagrove, retired maintenance foreman with Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, S.C., and a member of Cowpens Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Marilyn Oglesby of Surfside, S.C., and Katie Lusk of Winchester, Ky.; sons, Ronald Boone of Henderson and Mitchell Boone of Albuquerque, N.M.; sisters, Opal Berryman of Rockingham and Eva Stevenson and Daphne Boone, both of Asheboro; brothers, Joseph Boone of Asheboro, Lee Boone of Laurens, S.C., and Phillip Boone of Raleigh; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.

No visitation will be held.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Ruth Caudle Jaffray, 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998.

She was a native of Guilford County, retired from 7-11 and a member of Level Cross United Methodist Church.

Surviving are sons, John M. Jaffray of Fort Myers, Fla., Joseph R. Jaffray of Baxley, Ga., and Jeffrey A. Jaffray of Landham, Md.; daughters, Ruthie Duvalle of Homosassa, Fla., and Ann Bristol of Dallas, Texas; sister, Elsie C. Toomes of Randleman; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Asheboro, a homemaker and the widow of Alex Reid Lewis.

Surviving are sons, Roy E. Lewis of Conover, R. Frank Lewis of Kannapolis and Ronald M. Lewis of Salisbury; sisters, Leah Mae Walker of Randleman and Pauline McLeod of Asheboro; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Jeremiah Cleveland Siler, infant son of Angel Siler, of 1108 Oxford St., died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at UNC Chapel Hill.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Piney Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Siler City with the Rev. Duane Partin officiating.

Surviving in addition to the mother are brother, Jacob Rivas of Siler City; grandparents, Darrell Siler and Debra Siler, both of Siler City, and William Lynch and Tammy Lynch, both of Moncure; great-grandparents, Grady Siler of Siler City and Naomi Siler of South Boston, Va.

He was a native of Randolph County, owner and operator of Smith Ready Mix Concrete Co., and a charter member of Liberty Savings and Loan.

Surviving are wife, Cora "Topsy" Hinshaw Smith of the home; daughters, Joel Cole and Margo Simmons, both of Liberty; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty 7-9 p.m. Friday and other times at the residence.
