FRANKLINVILLE - Bernice Caswell Jones, 93, of 137 Rose St., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Franklinville United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Robert Shelton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired owner and operator of Franklinville Motor Company and a charter member of the Franklinville Lions Club.

Surviving are wife, Iula Routh Jones; son, Ralph N. Jones of Peachtree City, Ga.; daughters, Sarah J. Hambleton of Ocala, Fla., Grace J. Allred of Asheboro; sisters, Olivia J. Sykes, Lillian J. Kirkman, both of Asheboro; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Joy A. Carter

LIBERTY - Joy Andrew Carter, 92, of 9045 B. Cocoa Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Howard Spray officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Alamance County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Clifford "R.C." Carter of the home; daughter, Doris Daniels of Liberty; son, Bobby Carter of Liberty; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of the daughter, 9045 Cocoa Road, Liberty.

Rosa B. Willett

SILER CITY - Rosa Brewer Willett, 102, of 205 Olympia St., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Country Forest Manor.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Edward Hill Friends Meeting, where she was a member, with Dr. Linda Greene and the Rev. J.R. Bouldin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, a seamstress and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Estelle W. Swaim of High Point, Maye W. Cheek, Faye W. Brooks, both of Siler City; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

PLEASANT GARDEN - Edna Mae Underwood Garrett, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Clapps Nursing Center.

Funeral service was 3 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem U.M.C., Climax, where she was a member, with the Rev. Mark Andrews officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County, the widow of Joe Garrett Sr. and retired from Odell Hardware Co. of Greensboro.

Surviving are daughters, Sandra Carmany, Martha Willis; son, Lee Garrett; sister, Villa Allred; brothers, Cletus Dunham, Bill Underwood; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, is in charge of the arrangements.

Nell S. Lemons

TROY - Nell Smitherman Lemons, 77, of 655 Biscoe Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Chuck Cook officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County.

Surviving are husband, Bill Lemons of the home; sister, Joyce Smitherman of Troy.

Doris E. Phillips

CARTHAGE - Doris E. Phillips, 66, of Vernon Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Glendon Christian Church, with the Rev. Bob Yandle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are sister, Edna Gideons of Greensboro; brothers, Vernon Phillips, Richard Phillips, both of Carthage.

Robert L. Foley

MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. - Robert Lee Foley, 80, of Route 2, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jack Holland and the Rev. Clarence Marshall officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard and Masonic rites by the Mountain Home Masonic Lodge #263.

He was a native of Patrick County, Va., a member of Masonic Lodge #263 and Meadows of Dan VFW Post 8467, formerly employed with United Elastic and was retired from J.P. Stevens in Stuart, Va.

Surviving are Cora Grace Williams Foley of the home; daughters, Mary Jo Vipperman of Martinsville, Va., Ann Gardner of Asheboro; brother, Raymond Foley of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Moody Funeral Home, Stuart, Va., 7-8:30 p.m. Friday and one half hour prior to the service Saturday.

Memorials may be made to Vesta Rescue Squad, the Laurel Fork Rescue Squad or to a favorite charity.

Audrey West Allen, of 304 Gardiner Road, Asheboro, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Chris Thore and Rev. Byron Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Holly Springs Friends Meeting Cemetery.

She was a native of Asheboro.

Surviving are husband, Eddie G. Allen of Asheboro; daughters, Pat Davidson of Greensboro and Pam Hill of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brothers, Sydney West and Jerry West, both of Asheboro; three grandchildren.

Lena D. Ragsdale

Lena Cornelia Deaton Ragsdale, of 135 Dixon Street, Asheboro, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Asheboro Church of Christ, where she was a member, with the Rev. Michael Jordan and Rev. Nathan King officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, retired after 35 years from Kearns Service Drug, and former secretary and treasurer of the women's fellowship at her church.

Surviving are husband, Roy Lee Ragsdale Sr. of the home; sons, Lee Ragsdale of Savannah, Ga., and Lane Deaton Ragsdale of the home.

Wesley A. Woodell

Wesley Allen Woodell, 77, of 342 E. Salisbury St., Asheboro, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

No funeral service will be held.

He was a native of Guilford County, a veteran of the Air Force and business manager of Quality Catering for 28 years.

Surviving are wife, Gloria Woodell of Asheboro; daughter, Rose W. Allen of Franklinville; sons, Tim Woodell of Randleman, Ron Woodell of Greensboro, and Wayne S. Woodell of Asheboro; brothers, Benny "Buster" Woodell and Morris J. Woodell, both of High Point; sister, Marie Mitchell of High Point; seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Milas Haywood

CANDOR - Milas Haywood, 77, of Graybriar Nursing Home, Trinity, formerly of McCallum Pond Road, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Holly Mount Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Mitchell Walker officiating. Burial will be in Candor Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a Master Sergeant in the Army during World War II, a former deacon at his church, the retired owner and operator of H&H Motor Co. and a retired automobile mechanic teacher at Montgomery Community College.

Surviving are wife, Annie Parsons Haywood of Troy; daughters, Elizabeth Poe of Sophia and Carolyn Tucker of Hickory; sister, Sudie Blake of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

William P. Holdaway

TROY - William Preston Holdaway, 73, of N.C. 109 North, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at First Health Montgomery Hospital.

Funeral service was 1 p.m. Saturday at his home with the Rev. Ken Hogan and Rev. Dean Lamar officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery.

He was a native of Washington County, Va., attended Calvary Gospel Church and was a self-employed painter.

Surviving are daughters, Linda Brewer of Albemarle, Patsy Montgomery of Eldorado, Va., Shirley Caudle of Troy, Cathy Thompson of Rockingham and Nancy Smith of Coeburn, Va.; brothers, David Holdaway of King, Charles Holdaway of Thomasville, Jasper Holdaway of Meadowview, Va., and Roger Holdaway of Stuart, Va.; sisters, Grace Fuller of Ridgeway, Va., Faylene Boardwine and Stella Moore, both of Meadowview, Va., Mary Sexton of Stonesville, Va., and Pauline Rigsby of Martinsville, Va.; 22 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

LIBERTY - Burl V. Long, 83, of 1937 Soapstone Mountain Road, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at his residence.

Surviving are wife, Ann B. Long of the home; son, Vernon Long of Chicago, Ill.; sisters, Helen Lewsader of Terre Haute, Ind., and Bonnie Harlow of Parkersburg, W.Va.; four grandchildren.

Roger L. Martin

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Roger Lee Martin, 37, of Island Reef, S.C., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998,x at Conway Hospital.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the First Church of God in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was a member. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

He was a native of Bentwater Rendlesham, Suffolk, England, a former bus driver for Horry County Schools, and chairman of the board at his church.

Surviving are wife, Tamala Smith Martin; son, Christopher Lee Martin of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter, Gwendolyn Anne Martin of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; his parents of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brothers, J. Craig Martin of Asheboro and Vaugh R. Martin of Columbia, S.C.; sisters, Susan Todd of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Debbie Martin of Hilton Head, S.C.

He was a native of Chatham County, retired from Hadley-Peoples Manufacturing Co., a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the widower of Betty Phillips McDaniel.

Surviving are daughter, Vickie M. Jones of the home; sons, Jeffery G. McDaniel of Siler City and Phillip A. McDaniel of Snow Camp; sister, Ann M. Sandefur of Resaca, Ga.; brothers, Earl McDaniel and David McDaniel, both of Siler City, Lewis McDaniel of Killeen, Texas, and Ray McDaniel of Thomasville; seven grandchildren.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a retired textile employee.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, S.C., and at 3 p.m. Monday at Bethel Friends Church in Asheboro, where she was a member. Burial will be in Holly Springs Friends Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Nashville, Tenn.

Surviving are husband, David Earl Pleasant of Cheraw, S.C.; son, Henry M. Bellamy III of Patrick Springs, Va.; stepson, David H. Pleasant of Raleigh; daughters, Jo Bellamy of Wilmington and Kathy Skinner of Ocean Springs, Miss.; stepdaughter, Susan E. Pleasant of Kinnelon, N.J.; mother, Maggie Macon of Asheboro; brother, Jerry Macon of Asheboro; seven grandchildren.

CHASE, Md. - Wilma F. Reed, 75, of Reed Road, Chase, Md., formerly of Asheboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in Baltimore, Md.

Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sharp Street United Methodist Church in Chase, Md.

Surviving are sons, Wesley Reed and Ricky Reed, both of Baltimore, Md., and Elmer L. Reed of Chase, Md.; daughters, Ruth McDuffie, Sharon Hart, and Deborah Reed, all of Baltimore, Md.; sister, Melvenia F. Headen of Asheboro; brothers, Lewis Foust of Baltimore, Md., and Arnold R. Foust and Clyde L. Foust, both of Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. C. Garland Young and the Rev. Ivan H.M. Peden officiating. Burial will be in City Cemetery in Asheboro.

He was a native of Maxton, a graduate of Georgia Military Academy and Wake Forest Law School, and retired as the corporate attorney and vice-president of Adams Mills Corporation. He was a former state senator, highway commissioner and chairman of the N.C. Economic Development Board.

Surviving are wife, Betsy Armfield Smith; daughter, Dee Smith Pell of Charlotte; son, Thomas Lynwood "Woody" Smith Jr. of High Point; brother, Archie L. Smith of Asheboro; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be in the Asbury Room at the church 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday.
