He was a native of Randolph County.

LEXINGTON - Virginia Lee Cox Moorefield, 82, of Riverside Convalescent Center, formerly of Lexington, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at the Center.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Ray Howell III officiating. Burial will be in Lexington City Cemetery.
She was a native of Randleman, the widow of George M. Moorefield, a 1941 graduate of Mars Hill College and attended Wake Forest College. She had worked as a draftsman, secretary, substitute teacher, seamstress and caterer and operated Peoples Drug Store with her husband for many years. She was president of the Women's Missionary Union, a member of the Senior Adult Choir and a Sunday School teacher at her church and was a member of the National Campers and Hikers Association.
Surviving are son, Donnie Moorefield of Morgan Hill, Calif.; daughters, Marie Fleischer of Buffalo, N.Y., Delia Rea of Newport News, Va.; brother, Vance Cox of Mt. Airy; one grandson.

Carlyle N. Clayton
RALEIGH - Carlyle N. Clayton, 85, of 501 E. Whitaker Mill Road, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998.
A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. Burial will be at Montlawn Memorial Park.
He was a native of Pickens, S.C., retired Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology at N.C. State University, a graduate of Clemson College with a B.S. in horticulture, where he was on the staff of the Vegetable Research Station, and of the University of Wisconsin with a Ph.D in plant pathology. He joined the faculty at NCSU in 1945 and helped to begin a comprehensive research program on peaches and other small fruit, had the Clayton peach named after him and was recognized with life memberships by the grape, apple and peach industries of North Carolina in 1978. He received the Outstanding Plant Pathologist Award from the Southern Division of American Phytopathological Society, and the National Peach Growers Council Achievement in 1986 and was the owner and operator of Clayton's Orchard and Nursery in the Sandhills area. He was a deacon and elder at his church.
Surviving are wife, Adelaide Shumate Clayton; daughter, Jo Ann C. Leist of Asheboro; son, C. Andrew Clayton of Cary; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Williamsport, Pa., the widow of J. Henry Stahl, had taught at Sheridan Elementary School, was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Retired teachers, National Retired Teachers Association and Pennsylvania State Education Association. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Jacksonville and Pennsylvania Chapter 500, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are son, J. Henry Stahl Jr. of Williamsport, Pa.; daughters, Lillie M. Hunsucker of Charlotte Court House, Va., Grace E. LeVan of Jacksonville, Claire Ann Casals of Franklinville; brother, Dr. Henry C. Wray of Bucker Hill, W. Va.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Randolph County, taught at Wendell Elementary, Ravenscroft and Enloe High schools, was a producer/director of Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant for 20 years and coordinating producer with Miss Mississippi Scholarship Pageant. He was a member of NEA and NCAE and was the recipient of the 1968 Terry Sanford Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Surviving are brother, Ed Routh of Asheboro; sister, Nancy Welborn of Asheboro; Chris Lassiter of the home.
