The Rev. Colon Calvin Cranford, 74, of 3904 U.S. 64 East, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Tim Wolfe and the Rev. Billy Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, the former pastor of Pentecostal Holiness Church and retired salesman with Charlotte Liberty Mutual Insurance Co.

Surviving are wife, Grace Burroughs Cranford; brother, Jim Cranford of Asheboro; sisters, Ollie Carter of High Point, Clady Pless of Canton.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

ARCHDALE - Leslie Hobart "Bet" Davis, 96, of 4009 Archdale Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, Archdale.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Funeral Home, Archdale, with the Rev. Melvin B. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired self-employed automotive technician and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are wife, Pearl Rhodes Davis of the home; daughters, Fay Lingerfelt of Thomasville, Libby Simpson of Woodstock, Ga.; sons, Wayne Davis of Archdale, Donald Davis of the home; sisters, Forn Darnell of Lexington, Virginia Taylor of Archdale; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Rev. Edward N. Hooker
PLEASANT GARDEN - The Rev. Edward N. Hooker of 432 Steeple Chase Road, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Baptist Church, Climax. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was the pastor of St. John Baptist Church for several years, pastor of New Zion Missionary Church for 41 years and Red Hill Baptist Church for 37 years.

Surviving are wife, Bernice Dilworth Hooker of the home; daughter, Karen McDuffie of Sanford; foster daughter, Rosa Watt of Greensboro; sons, William E. Hooker of Greensboro, Kenneth L. Hooker of Pleasant Garden; sister, Annebelle White of Snow Camp; brothers, Percy Hooker, Leroy Hooker, both of Greensboro, Frank Hooker of Durham, Connie Hooker of Burlington, James Hooker of Brooklyn, N.Y., Sterling Thompson of Swepsonville; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

The family will be at the church 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Burlington, where he was a member, with Dr. Craig McMahan officiating. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

He was a native of New Hanover County, a minister, formerly employed with Burlington Industries, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea and a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are wife, Pauline Smith Gray of Burlington; daughters, Barbara G. Grandi of Burlington, Paula G. Diemer of Oak Ridge; sons, Kenneth A. Gray of Asheboro, John William Gray Jr. of Elon College, James A. Gray of Woodstock, Ga.; brother, Adrian Gray of Virginia Beach, Va.; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at Rich & Thompson Mortuary, Burlington, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

She was a native of Randolph County, a member of Faith Baptist Temple Church and a homemaker.

LIBERTY - Willie Eugene "Pat" Coble, 78, of 160 S. Asheboro St., died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, with the Rev. Bryan Fox officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

He was a native of Liberty, a member of First United Methodist Church and a retired member of the Liberty Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are wife, Frances M. Coble of the home; sons, Larry Coble, Jerry Coble, both of Liberty; sister, Betty Martin of Liberty; brothers, A.J. Coble of Troutville, Va., Bobby Coble of Haw River; three grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Wesleyan Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dennis Boone and the Rev. Ronald Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park.

He was a member of the Adult Sunday School class and the church board at his church and was owner/operator of Stout Interiors.

Surviving are wife, Mary Lee Overman Stout of Siler City; daughters, Dana S. Descent, Kristy S. Phillips, both of Siler City; mother, Gladys Miller Stout of Ramseur; sister, Diane S. Smith of Bear Creek; brothers, Bill Stout of Greensboro, Rick Stout of Asheboro.

Surviving are daughters, Rosemary K. Thomas of Wilmington, Margaret K. Jones of Bennett; sons, Rives Kelly, D. Archie Kelly, both of Carthage; sister, Mary Ruth Kirkman of Pleasant Garden; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

CARTHAGE - James D. Shields, 91, of McReynolds St., died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Stuart Gordon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a master's degree in science, was a teacher in the Durham public schools and a retired farmer in Moore County.

The family will be at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

TRINITY - Ometia B. Alford, 95, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Guilford Health Care Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary's United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Miller Carter Jr. and Rev. Cornelius Holland officiating. Burial will follow in the Carolina Biblical Gardens.

She was the widow of Vernal Gasper Alford, a member of the United Methodist Women and Senior Choir at her church and a former employee of White House Restaurant.

Surviving are sons, the Rev. Vernal G. Alford Jr. and Oscar W. "Billy" Alford, both of Greensboro, and Rev. Dr. Howard Lee Alford of Randellstown, Md.; daughters, Cora Alford Miller and Juanita Alford Bell, both of Durham, and Sadie Alford Bennett of Greensboro; sisters, Sadie Nelson of High Point and Evangeline Pendergrast of Greensboro; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Haizlip Funeral Chapel 7-8 p.m. Sunday and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar W. Alford, 401 Woodlake Drive, Greensboro.

He was a native of Randolph County, employed by Ramseur Interlock and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are daughter, Patricia Williams Cox of Siler City; sisters, Eula Hicks, Louise Wright and Lucy Moore, all of Staley, and Eva Brady of Asheboro; brother, Wade Williams of Greensboro; two grandchildren; one great-grandson.
