He was a native of Davidson County, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, Denton office, and a member of National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was a member of Healing Springs Fire Department board of directors, Denton Masonic Lodge #404 AF & AM, Denton Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #216, Woodmen of the World Lodge #976, Life Member of Denton Amvet Post #240 and on the board of Clear Springs United Methodist Church.
Surviving are wife, Nell Rogers Varner of the home; sons, Richard "Ricky" Varner of Denton, Jimmy Varner of Salisbury; daughters, Angie Szares, Sharon Ayers, both of Denton; brother, Frank Varner of Denton; sisters, Margaret Clayton, Rachel Huneycutt, both of Albemarle, Norene "Beanie" Whitley of New London; three grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; one stepgreat-grandchild.

Surviving are sons, Paul Shaw Jr., Wayne Shaw, both of Troy; brothers, John Shaw of Troy, Henry Shaw of Zebulon; sister, Ethel Bateman of Rockingham; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Snellings Funeral Home, Chesapeake, Va., with the Rev. Vance Smith and the Rev. Robert D. Hill Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, with military rites.
He was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Norfolk, a U.S. Navy veteran of Korea and Vietnam and formerly employed at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
Surviving are wife, Rachel "Betty" Hill of Chesapeake, Va.; daughter, Sharon H. Williams of Asheboro; son, the Rev. Robert D. SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, Tenn. - Dr. Robert E. Mabe, 77, formerly of Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at his home.
A memorial service was Dec. 15 at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, with Dr. William Dudley officiating. A private burial was held.
He was a native of Stoneville, a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps and recipient of the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and Harvard University, served his residence at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and was a member of the American College of Chest Physicians. He was a deacon and elder at his church and a member of Gideons International and the Downtown Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are wife, Ida Kummer Mabe; daughters, Cynthia M. Solomon of Columbia, Md., Christine M. Scott, Catherine M. Pyron, both of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; sister, Ernestine Stone of Charlotte; five grandchildren.

She was a native of Carthage and a retired nurse with the state of California after 30 years.
