Charles Lynwood Leggett, Sr., 65, of Bolivia

Charles Lynwood Leggett, Sr., 65, of Bolivia, died Sunday, December 17, 2000, at Duke University Hospital in Durham.
He was born February 22, 1935, in Robeson County, the son of Ricks and Eula Leggett.
He was retired and had worked most of his life in industrial construction.
A farmer, he was involved in outdoor hobbies and occupations.
He was a member of Pythagoras Lodge #249 A.F. & A.M. and Brunswick County Shrine Club.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Leggett of the home; his children, Charles L. Leggett, Jr. of Fuquay-Varina and Cyndi Hendricks of Bolivia; one grandchild, Zachary Hendricks; brothers, Jake and Donald Leggett of Greensboro, and Ricky Leggett of Fairmont; a sister, Allyson Martin of Lumberton.
Graveside service was conducted at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday), at Northwood Cemetery, Southport, with the Rev. Rene' Pare' officiating and Masonic Rites accorded by Pythagoras Lodge #249 A. F. & A.M.

Robert Allen Rees, 41, of Kinston

Robert Allen Rees, 41, of Kinston, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, at Caswell Center in Kinston.
Graveside service was conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, at Northwood Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Webb officiating.
Rees was born August 15, 1959, in Southport, son of Samuel and Carolyn Apple Rees, and had lived in Kinston, most of his life.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dianne Rees Carroll, and is survived by his parents, Sammy and Carolyn Rees of Bolivia; a brother, Tommy Rees of Oak Island; a sister, Susan Rees Bolduc of Southport; grandmother, Mozelle Apple of Greensboro; aunt, Eleanor Jones Price of Virginia; uncles, Charles Apple of Greensboro, and Steve Apple of Oak Island; five nieces; two nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to March of Dimes Birth Defects Association, 1275 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605.

William D. Walsh of St. James Plantation

William D. Walsh of St. James Plantation, Southport, died Friday, December 8, 2000.
He was born in Bronx, N.Y., was a resident of Freeport, N.Y., for most of his life and was an educator in the Freeport Public School System for 32 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He earned his Bachelor's degree from Brockport State University, Brockport, N.Y., and a Master's degree from Hofstra University, Uniondale, N.Y.
He retired to Southport, seven years ago.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #2069, Oak Island.
He is survived by a brother, Dr. John E. Walsh, II; sisters, Geraldine McFarland and Patricia Peters; daughters, Margaret Frances Marshall and Kathryn Gaetana Muldowney; a son, William Daniel Walsh, Jr.; a granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Muldowney.
Services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in his memory to one of the following: Coastal Junior Golf Tour, Inc. (contact Mr. Hines at (910) 762-4652); Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #2059, Oak Island, NC 28465; National Multiple Sclerosis Association; Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund, Southport, NC 28461.

Susan Lynn May, 47, of Palm Bay, Fla.

Susan Lynn May, 47, formerly of Long Beach, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000, at her residence in Palm Bay, Fla.
She was born in Lansing, Mich., and came to Brevard County, Fla., in 1994 from Oregon.
She was a former accountant with the U.S. Department of Environmental Quality, and was involved in Unity of Melbourne, Mended Hearts and Metaphysical Singles.
While living and working in the Southport area, she was in charge of the training library at CP&L's Brunswick Nuclear Plant.
She was preceded in death by her father, Frank May, Jr.
Surviving are her mother, Diane May of Springhill, Fla., and brother, Steven May of Del Ray Beach, Fla.
Services were held Friday, December 15.
In lieu of flowers, she requested a tree be planted in her memory.
Arrangements by Atlantic Mortuary in Cocoa, Fla.

Craig Allen Fitzgivens, 45, of New Bern

Craig Allen Fitzgivens, 45, of New Bern, a former resident of the Southport area, died last week at his residence.
He was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, served in Desert Storm and received honors as West Coast Sailor for 1986 and East Coast Sailor in 1991.
He was a member of Cherry Point Masonic Lodge #688.
Memorial services were held December 29, at Cotten Chapel in New Bern.
Burial was in Coastal Carolina Veterans Cemetery with military honors.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Melvin Fitzgivens, and mother, Esther Marie Markin Fitzgivens.
He is survived by his former wife, Nancy Ann Markel of New Bern; two sons, Kenneth Allen Fitzgivens and Matthew Scott Fitzgivens, both of New Bern; a brother, Daniel Mark Fitzgivens of Norman, Okla.; two sisters, Deborah Kay Whitehurst of Charleston, S.C., and Catherine Sue Erwin of Arcarum, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, P.O. Box 814, New Bern, NC 28563.

Alvin Lincoln Swain, Sr., 77, Lakes resident

Alvin Lincoln Swain, Sr., 77, of Boiling Spring Lakes, died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at his residence.
The graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Northwood Cemetery with Dr. Wayne Adkisson officiating.
Ushers of Southport Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers.
Swain was born August 26, 1923, in Tyrrell County, and moved here in 1973 from Fayetteville.
He was employed at Oak Island Ace Hardware, worked as a master craftsman for 27 years, was a retired U.S. Army staff sergeant and was a member of Southport Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona Walker and Delona Mae West, and a son, Jamie Sykes.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Erna S. Swain of the home; three sons, Alvin L. Swain, Jr. and wife, Maria of Singapore, Tony W. Swain and wife, Cindy of Fredericksburg, Va., and Clarence Sykes and wife, Patricia of Southport; three daughters, Gloria Ruiz of Fayetteville, Sandra K. Swain of Kinston and Patricia Hughes and husband, Don of Oak Island; two sisters, Lillian Stegal of Tarboro and Winnifred Hudson of Hertford; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a special niece, Sandra Nixon of Wilmington; and friend, Bill Smith of Oak Island.
Memorial contributions may be made to Southport Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 North Howe Street, Southport, NC 28461.

Marshall Perkins Claiborne, Jr. of Greensboro

Marshall Perkins Claiborne, Jr., 87, of Greensboro, and Oak Island, died Saturday, December 30, 2000, at Clapp's Nursing Home in Pleasant Garden.
Private family graveside services were held Tuesday, in Westminster Gardens.
Claiborne was born in Dillwyn, Va., on February 7, 1913, to the late Marshall and Aubra Price Claiborne.
He attended the University of Virginia and was retired from the U.S. government.
Claiborne was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a former deacon.
He was a Mason and member of Greensboro Lodge #76.
Survivors include his two daughters, Marsha Wood and Jan Claiborne, both of Greensboro; a sister, Catherine Kinker of Chester, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Guilford County Humane Society, 4527 West Wendover Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410; or, the Salvation Army, 821 South Aycock Street, Greensboro, NC 27403.
Forbis and Dick North Elm Street is serving the Claiborne family.

Mrs. Saundra McCracken, 65, of Southport

Saundra Jeanette Morris McCracken, 65, of Southport, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
She was born February 19, 1935, to Carl Booth and Lela Hill Morris, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. McCracken was a member of Brown's Chapel AME Zion Church of Southport, where she led the youth ministry for many years.
She also was employed for 25 years as a teacher's assistant at Southport Elementary School.
She is survived by her husband, Herman E. McCracken of the home; three daughters, Gwendolyn Vaught and husband, Lewis of Winnabow, Cheryl Malone and husband, Victor of Misawa City, Japan, and Saundra Robbins and husband, John of Charlotte; four sons, James McCracken and wife, Melaney of Hamlet; Mark McCracken and wife Sylvia of Atlanta, Ga., Darrell McCracken of Southport, and Quinton McCracken of Scottsdale, Ariz.; four sisters, Lillie Thompson and husband, the Rev. Luther Thompson, Addie McCracken and husband, George, Catherine Hill and Diane Williams, all of Southport; two brothers, Leon Morris and Carl Morris, both of Southport; an aunt, Louise Clemmons of Southport; an uncle, Fornville Morris of Hampton, Va.; ten grandchildren, Lewis Vaught, Jr. and wife Kimberly, Sherri Ann Vaught, Jamie McCracken, Nicole McCracken, Jerrick Robbins, Johnathan Robbins, Jasmine Robbins, Ashley McCracken, Meghan Malone and Sean Malone; five great-grandchildren, Kevon Vaught, Asha McCracken, Brandon Vaught, Kahleel McCracken and Jermaine Green.
Services were held today (Wednesday) at Brown's Chapel AME Zion Church of Southport at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Kenneth Hall presenting the eulogy and a prayer by pastor Dorothy Gibbs.
Burial followed at Northwood Cemetery, Southport.

Grace J. Portrum, 91, of Oak Island

Grace J. Portrum, 91, of Oak Island, died December 28, 2000, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Paschal Portrum, and parents, Gustav and Matilda Johnson.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Morristown, Tenn., and was secretary of First United Methodist Church for many years; past president of the Pilot Club, member of the Ladies Reading Circle, volunteered at the public library and for the Red Cross bloodmobile.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Patricia Portrum of Morristown, Tenn.; her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Willard Jordan of Oak Island; brothers, Cyril and Don of Florida, and W.F. of California; grandchildren Jessica Portrum, Pat Portrum, Fred Portrum, Michael Portrum and Laura Mandzak; six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, at Allen Funeral Home in Morristown, Tenn., with the Rev. Tom Dodge officiating.
Interment was in Jarnigan Cemetery.

Dorothy Llewellyn Kelly, 64, of Oak Island

Mrs. Dorothy Llewellyn Kelly, 64, of Oak Island, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, at Ocean View United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Roberts officiating.
Serving as active pallbearers were Capt. Van Eddinger, Johnny Vereen, John Ramsey, Dick Marshall, Roger Lee Edwards and Roy Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Brunswick County ABC Commission and the mayor and town council of Oak Island.
Mrs. Kelly was born February 19, 1936, in Wilson, a daughter of the late Romulus and Jesse Dhue Llewellyn, and moved to Oak Island, from Charlotte, in 1982.
After completing her education, Mrs. Kelly worked as a dental assistant with Dr. Roy Heath in Durham, and later moved to Charlotte, where she worked with Eastern Air Lines.
It was in Charlotte, that she met David Kelly and they were married in 1967.
Following her move to Oak Island, she worked in real estate and served on the Rural Leadership Committee.
She also served as manager of the Brunswick County ABC system.
Mrs. Kelly formerly served as commissioner for the Town of Yaupon Beach, was mayor pro-tem from 1989-1995, and in 1996, was elected mayor.
She held the office of mayor until the merger of Yaupon Beach, with Long Beach, in 1999, at which time, she and the Long Beach mayor were named co-mayors of the newly-formed Town of Oak Island.
She continued to serve as co-mayor until November, 1999, at which time, she became mayor pro-tem.
An active political supporter of Gov. Jim Hunt, she was appointed by Gov. Hunt to the North Carolina Commission for the Blind, a post she held until 2000.
At the time of her death, she was a member of the North Carolina Battleship Commission.
Locally, Mrs. Kelly was also past president of the Brunswick County Board of Realtors, served on the N.C. Fourth of July Festival Committee as organizer and chairman of Beach Day, was a founding officer of Brunswick Newcomers Club, had served as vice-chairman of the Brunswick County Register of Deeds Advisory Committee, was an officer on the Southport Community Building Board of Trustees, a member of the Brunswick County Community Housing Resource Board, a member of Southport Woman's Club, and was an active volunteer in formation of Southeast Brunswick Sanitary District.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Romulus Llewellyn, and is survived by her husband of nearly 34 years, David E. Kelly of the home; a daughter, Mary Kelly of Raleigh; two sons, David Kelly, II of Southport, and Robert Kelly of Monroe; a sister, Mrs. Earl (Frankie) Corrington of Wilson; two brothers, Richard Llewellyn of Newport, and James D. Llewellyn of Kinston; six grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Dosher Memorial Hospital, 924 North Howe Street, Southport, NC 28461.
