Roland `C.R.' Smith, 77; funeral is 2 p.m. today
Roland "C.R." Smith, 77, of Newport, died Friday at Carteret General Hospital.
His funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Newport Baptist Church, with Dr. Randy Outland officiating.
Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Alene Smith, of Newport; two daughters, Shirley McKiddy of Harlowe and Teresa Motes of Newport; a son, Perry Smith of Broad Creek, two sisters, Lonnie Mae Camden of Coats and Peggy Lee of Newport; two brothers, Cecil Smith and Linbergh Smith, both of Newport; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Smith was retired from civil service at Cherry Point, and was a member of Newport Baptist Church.

Helena Betz, Pennsylvania; daughter is from Beaufort
Helena K. Betz, 76, of Mt. Carmel, Pa., died April 17 at her home.
She was the mother of Mrs. Joseph (Barbara Anne) Paul of Beaufort.
Other survivors include her husband, Donald,; another daughter, Helena Betz of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Suzanne Betz of Strong, Pa., and Donald and Sharon Betz of Locust Gap, Pa.; a brother, Anthony Knoblauch, of Mt. Carmel, Pa.; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Knoblauch.
She retired in 1983 from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, where she worked as a claims adjuster.
She worked most recently at the Mt. Carmel Library.
She was a 1941 graduate of Mt. Carmel Catholic High School and married Donald Betz, Sr. on May 1, 1944.
She was a member of Church of Our Lady, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Retired State Workers Association.
A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted April 24 at Church of Our Lady, with Monsignor Lawrence Overbaugh officiating.
Burial followed in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Locust Gap, Pa.

Margaret Jones Holleman, 78; has family in Morehead City
Margaret Frances Jones Holleman, 78, of Raleigh, died Thursday at her home.
She was the mother of Mike Holleman and wife, Linda, of Morehead City.
Her funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Westover United Methodist Church, Raleigh.
Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Other survivors include children, Allen and Barbara Holleman of Raleigh, Julie Lloyd of Raleigh, and Jeannie Holleman of Wilmington; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, "Pete" Joseph Holleman; her parents, Howard and Lena Jones; and her brother, Howard G. Jones, Jr.

William A. Oldham, 76; funeral to be Sunday
William A. "Tex" Oldham, 76, of Otway, died Saturday at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Marshallberg, with Masonic Rites.
The Rev. Ellis Bedsworth will officiate.
Mr. Oldham served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of the Crissie Wright Lodge No. 741 Scottish Rite and a Shriner and was a member of Baptist Church in Crockett, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Cleo Parkin Oldham; three daughters, Helen O. Ellis and husband, Sol, of Durham, Donna O. Field of Durham, and Becky O. Wintsch and husband, Adrian, of Huntersville; a stepdaughter, Margaret Guthrie of Gloucester; a sister, Artie Johnson of Crockett, Texas; a brother, Bill Oldham and wife, Joan, of Creedmoor; a brother-in-law, Thomas Parkin of Beaufort; two granddaughters, Donna Parnell and husband, Andy, of Bladenboro, and Wendy Hester of Durham; two grandsons, Clarence Hilliard and wife, Cherry, of New Hill, and Mark Hester and wife, Melba, of Shannon; three step-grandsons; six step-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Dolly Mason Gaddonniex, 64; service was Thursday
Dolly Mason Gaddonniex, 64, of Morehead City, died Sunday at Carteret General Hospital.
Her funeral was Thursday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Sides officiating.
Ms. Gadonniex provided transportation for terminally ill patients to and from treatment in Carteret County.
She is survived by a daughter, Sherry Creech of Beaufort; a son, Terry Willis and wife Kathy of Morehead City; two brothers, Leroy Mason of Mississippi and Bruce Mason of Louisiana; 12 grandchildren, Jesse Creech Jr, Kelly Creech, Wayne Creech, Susan Harrison, Alexa Higgins, Terri Jo Willis, Johnny Gadonniex, Kimmy McLaughlin, Jonathan McLaughlin, Dale Creech, Charles Joseph Willis and Elizabeth Rae Willis; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, James Kelly Shipp and Joseph Ferrell Willis, Jr.

Charles Sparks Allen, 94; service to be Saturday
Charles Sparks "Church" Allen, 94, of Morehead City, died Wednesday at Carteret General Hospital.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Morehead City, with the Rev. Timothy Havlicek officiating.
Mr. Allen was born in Rochester, N.Y., in 1906 and graduated from Syracuse University.
He served in World War II in the European Theatre as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army.
He operated his own business in Manlius, N.Y., until retirement in Jekyll Island, Ga.
He moved to Carteret County, with his wife Irene in 1983.
Mr. Allen was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Ocean Lodge 405, Scottish Rite of New Bern, Sudan Shriners of New Bern, and the Lions Club of Morehead City.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Parsons Allen; two daughters, Virginia Rene McFadden and Mary Alice Koehl; a son, Charles Henry Allen; a step-daughter, Jennifer Frechette; six grandchildren, Dr. Deborah Elder, E. Scott McFadden, Matthew Koehl, Elizabeth Koehl, Chris Allen and Keith Allen; and five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Julia and Lily Elder and Grantham and Alexander Koehl.

Nancy Parham Phillips, 82; service to be Thursday
Nancy Parham Phillips, 82, of Morehead City, died Tuesday at Harborview Health Care Center.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Henderson, with Dr. Marion D. Lark officiating.
A native of Vance County, Mrs. Phillips was the daughter of the late Thomas Buckner Parham, Jr. and the late Mabel Pirie Parham.
She was a graduate of the former Henderson High School and salutatorian of the Class of 1935 and a graduate of High Point College.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a lifetime member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and the J.O.Y. Sunday school class.
In 1970, she was chosen as Vance County Woman of the Year.
She is survived by her husband, W. Haywood Phillips; two daughters, Susan Parham Phillips of Pine Knoll Shores and Elaine Phillips Sutton of Candler; a son, Wilson Haywood "Woody" Phillips, Jr. of Vienna, Va.; two sisters, Mary P. Raines of Charlotte, and Mabel P. Hicks of Columbia, S.C.; and five grandchildren.
