Herbert Tasman Pigott, 84; service to be Saturday
Herbert Tasman Pigott, 84, of Tarboro, formerly of Beaufort, died Wednesday at Beverly Health Care Center, Tarboro.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carteret Memorial Gardens, Beaufort.
Born in 1915 in Gloucester, Mr. Pigott resided in Gloucester, until 1954 when he moved to Beaufort, with his family.
In 1993, he and his wife moved to Tarboro, to be closer to family.
A master mechanic, Mr. Pigott was recognized in the area for his in-depth knowledge of engines.
His career spanned six decades, working as a mechanic at Harvey A. Smith Fish Meal Co. and with civil service aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.
He and his wife opened The Oyster Bar, a seafood restaurant on the North River in Bettie in 1947.
After selling the restaurant in 1949, he was employed with Lloyd A. Fry Roofing Co. as a master mechanic for 26 years.
In 1975, he joined the County Board of Education as a maintenance supervisor and retired in 1981.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith Gillikin Pigott; three daughters, Frances P. Harding of Baltimore, Md., Jeanne P. Temple of Hampton, Va., and Lynn P. Crisp and her husband, Douglas, of Tarboro; and five grandchildren, Leisha Meares Dyben of Basking Ridge, N.J., Gregory C. Meares of Corpus Christi, Texas, Peter A. Temple and Shannon E. Temple, both of Baltimore, Md., and Brett Crisp of Tarboro; and one great-grandson, Nicholas R. Dyben of Basking Ridge, N.J.
Arrangements are by Munden Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. of Morehead City.

Shirley LaFond, 80; no service scheduled
Shirley LaFond, 80, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Morehead City, died Thursday, June 1, at home.
No service is scheduled.
A native of Wilmington, Del., Mrs. LaFond lived in Morehead City, before moving to Florida.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, James; two daughters, Sandra Kirk of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Paulette McDougall of Berlin, Md.; a son, Paul Hopkins of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 26 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by R. Lee Williams and Son Funeral Home and Crematory of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Charles N. Simpson, 83; service to be Monday
Charles Nicholas Simpson, 83, of Beaufort, died Friday at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
His funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at North River United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Durner officiating.
Burial will follow in Carteret Memorial Gardens.
He was a member of North River United Methodist Church and served in the Army during World War II.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Jean Simpson of Beaufort and Debra Stinson and husband Pete of Core Creek; two sons, David Simpson and wife Vicky of Beaufort and Tommy Simpson and wife Sara of Morehead City; eight grandchildren, Joel Stinson, Jessica Simpson, Lauren Simpson, Christopher Simpson, Noah Simpson, Sam Simpson, Nicholas Simpson and Katie Simpson; a niece, Carol Chadwick Long of Morehead City; and a nephew, Dan Chadwick, Jr. of Kansas City, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila Simpson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Munden Funeral Home and Crematory, Morehead City.
Memorials may be made to North River Methodist Church, 2494 Highway 70, Beaufort, N.C. 28516.

Emma Lee Hall, 87; service to be Monday
Emma Lee Hall, 87, of Goldsboro, formerly of Carteret County, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro.
Her funeral will be 5 p.m. Monday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel, Morehead City, with the Rev. Tony McLamb officiating.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Morehead City.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty Grantham Rollins and husband Ben of La Grange, and Billie Lou Grantham Hail of Atlantic Beach; a sister, Carrie Alphin Collett of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and five grandchiildren, Benjamin E. Rollins, Jr. and Lee Grantham Rollins, both of La Grange, William Daniel Hall of Ashburn, Va., Jeffery Grantham of Boulder, Colo., and Christopher P. Grantham of Seattle, Wash.
She was preceded in death by husbands Paul A. Grantham and David John "D.J." Hall and a son, Paul A. Grantham, Jr.

Ross Harris, 81; service was Saturday
Ross Harris, 81, of Stacy, died Thursday at Taylor Extended Care Facility, Sea Level.
His funeral was held Saturday at Otway Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Jonny Carrol officiating.
Burial followed in Stacy Community Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Lawrence Harris; a son, Robert W. Harris of Marietta, Ga.; four sisters, Vivian H. Lewis, Nellie H. Zenger and Allie H. Gaskill, all of Stacy, and Ruby H. Salter of Sea Level; a brother, Glen L. Harris of Newport News, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Munden Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. of Morehead City.

Emily B. Ross, 83; service was Wednesday
Emily B. Ross, 83, of Roanoke, Va., died Thursday, Aug. 3.
She was the mother of Karen Rettie of Morehead City.
A memorial service was held in Roanoke on Aug. 9.
Mrs. Ross was a regular visitor to Morehead City, as a guest of her daughter and son-in-law, Dwight Rettie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice or to the UCF Endowment Fund, c/o Unitarian Coastal Fellowship, 13th and Evans streets, Morehead City, N.C. 28557.

Earl `Preston' Fulford, Sr., 67; service planned for today
Earl "Preston" Fulford, Sr., 67, of Newport, died Friday at Craven Regional Medical Center, New Bern.
His funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Munden Funeral Home, Morehead City, with the Rev. David Harper officiating.
Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Fulford; two daughters, Mary Rose of Newport, and Cindy Buck of Trenton; a son, Earl Fulford, Jr. of Newport; a sister, Margaret Jones of Newport; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Wells Turner, 76; arrangements incomplete
Mary Wells Turner, 76, of Emerald Isle, died Saturday at Craven Regional Medical Center, New Bern, after a long and gallant battle against cancer.
She was born May 17, 1924, in Pottstown, Pa.
Her parents were Russell D. and Clarice Anderson Wells.
She attended Wyncroft Academy and was a graduate of Syracuse University.
In the 1960s, she was president of the Roanoke Valley Republican Women's Club and campaign secretary to Linwood Holton in his successful run for governor of Virginia.
She was an avid bridge player and tennis enthusiast and belonged to several clubs and groups.
She is survived by her husband, James W. Turner; two daughters, Lark Turner MacPhail of Winnetka, Ill., and Jamie Turner Burke of Oakton, Va.; three sons-in-law, Brian Sonner, Andrew MacPhail and Thomas Burke; seven grandchildren, John P. Sonner, J. Colin Sonner, W. Reed MacPhail, Drew H. MacPhail, T. Owen Burke, Caitlin W. Burke and Mary E. Burke; and a sister, Barbara W. Taylor of White Stone, Va.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Turner Sonner, and a brother, David A. Wells.
Arrangements will be announced by Brooks Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. of Morehead City.

Elizabeth Park Oliver, 80; memorial service Aug. 19
Elizabeth Park Oliver, 80, of Cape Carteret, died Saturday at Nextcare Specialty Hospital, Rocky Mount.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church.
A native of Greensboro, she was born June 6, 1920 to Orville D. Park and Mossie Pugh Park.
She was a former resident of Greensboro, and Atlanta, Ga., and had lived in Cape Carteret, for 19 years.
After attending Greensboro College, she was employed by Johnson Controls in the company's Greensboro, and Atlanta offices.
She was a member of Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church, where she was the co-editor of the church newsletter for 10 years.
For her service, the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church USA awarded her an honorary life membership in 1996.
An avid golfer, she was an active member of the Ladies Golf Association of Star Hill Golf and Country Club.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Samuel T. Oliver; two daughters, Linda O. Jacoby of Greensboro, and Kathy O. Williams and her husband Steve of Banner Elk; one son, Samuel T. Oliver, Jr. and his wife Regina of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Jennifer W. Stephenson and her husband Rusty and Ross Andrews Jacoby, all of Greensboro, and Taylor Scot Williams of Banner Elk; and two great-grandchildren, Sam and Will Stephenson of Greensboro.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church, 100 Yaupon Drive, Cape Carteret, N.C. 28584 or to a charity of one's choice.

Nellie Lawrence Styron, 76; service to be Saturday
Nellie Lawrence Styron, 76, of Otway, died Thursday at Carteret General Hospital.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Otway Christian Church, with the Rev. Clifton Styron officiating.
Burial will be in Carteret Memorial Gardens, Beaufort.
Mrs. Styron is survived by a daughter, Gaye Styron of Raleigh; a son, Thom Styron and wife Valerie of Otway; a granddaughter, Melodi S. Briley and husband Billy of Wilson; and a great-grandson, Jarrod Thomas Briley of Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin Leon Styron; and a grandson, Jarrod Thomas Styron.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the home of Thom Styron, 193 Lawrence Road, Otway.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jarrod T. Styron Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Ann Street United Methodist Church, 417 Ann St., Beaufort, N.C. 28516.
